Governor Asa Hutchinson visits with ANC Board of Trustees Chairman John Newcomb following the grand opening for Arkansas Northeastern College’s new

Center for Allied Technologies. This new facility is an important feature for the College’s ability to continue to prepare students for the workforce.

Arkansas Northeastern College is once again the leading institution on wages earned by community college graduates in the state. The 2018 Economic Security Report provides first year earnings and employment data for 2015 and 2016 graduates and reveals once again that the Arkansas Northeastern College leads all colleges and universities in Arkansas in terms of the average full-time wages for associate degree graduates with an average full-time wage of $51,624 during students’ first year of employment. In fact, the only bachelor degree full-time wage average that exceeds ANC’s associate degree average is the medical school at UAMS.

The Grand Opening for Arkansas Northeastern College’s new Center for Allied Technologies was held August 17, 2018. The

public open house came just in time for the beginning of the Fall 2018 semester.

Construction of the new 90,000 square foot Center for Allied Technologies began in April 2017. This new center actually de-

creased the College’s overall facilities by 30,000 square feet by consolidating the Burdette Center, Harry L. Crisp Center, and

the ACME Center—with an estimated costs savings for the College of approximately $100,000 per year in maintenance. The

Center for Allied Technologies features the headquarters for the College’s customized training force—The Solutions Group,

including general purpose classrooms, electrical classroom/lab, mechanical classroom/lab, safety classroom/lab, HVACR class-

room/lab, computer classroom, and large multi-purpose room. Additionally, a world-class welding laboratory is available for

students. ANC Technical Center students from area high schools are being served on the ANC Main Campus by classroom

and lab facilities for Aviation Maintenance, Construction, Criminal Justice, Industrial Technology, Medical Professions, and

Welding. The design incorporates a computer lab specifically for the ANC Technical Center.

Also featured is an aviation complex, combination non-destructive testing (NDT) and composites laboratory, and general pur-

pose classrooms to fully accommodate ANC’s Federal Aviation Administration certified Aviation Maintenance program. Other

related facilities include an aircraft apron, paint booth, tool room and compass rose. The building features a two-story height

aviation room, welding lab, and glass entrance tower to add to the Center’s distinctiveness and appeal.

The Center is home to the newly created Arkansas Steelmaking Academy (a partnership with the SMS group of Germany) and

is scheduled to begin operations in 2019. By partnering with SMS, the Arkansas Northeastern College has become a satellite

training hub for North America as a cost-effective way to gain knowledge of cutting edge techniques in steelmaking and pro-

cessing. The agreement between ANC and SMS group will allow companies to save the costs of overseas travel by providing a

North American option for the renowned TECademy training.

The ANC Center for Allied Technologies impressively mixes high-tech and industrial components into an educational delivery

mode. The cost to complete this facility was approximately $14,400,000 including architectural and engineering fees. The new

Center is supported by $1,805,000 of private donations. Three distinctive features at the main entrance are the 52-foot vesti-

bule tower, an entrance garden honoring the late John Correnti, and an international flag court featuring national flags repre-

senting over two dozen corporate and private donors supporting the construction costs of the Center, including Japan, Argen-

tina, Germany, Canada, and, of course, the United State of America.

ANC President Dr. James Shemwell continued his tradition of hosting several “Focus Group Meetings” with students from different divi-sions at the College. During the month of November, Dr. Shemwell met with approximately 40 students who were nominated by faculty. Each Focus Group targeted a different student population. The Focus Groups were comprised of students in the following areas: Student Ambassadors, Allied Health, Allied Technologies, Arts and Sciences, and Online. Dr. Shemwell uses these meetings to learn the thoughts of the ANC student body. Hearing about the ANC experience directly from the students has become an invaluable tool for the College in meet-ing student needs. Student success is extremely important, and these meetings allow the President the opportunity to hear directly from the students in a setting where dialogue is comfortable and engaging.

BENNETT, FISHER SERVING LOCAL CHAMBERS

As a community college, Arkansas Northeastern College appreciates the role it plays in the constituencies it serves and fosters an environment where its employ-ees are encouraged to become involved in their communities. ANC employees serve on many boards, committees, and charitable organizations throughout the county. Two such employees are Vice President for Workforce Development Gene Bennett and Director of Student Services Courtney Fisher. Bennett was recently elected to serve as the President of the Osceola/South Mississippi County Chamber of Commerce Board and Fisher was elected as the President of the Great-er Blytheville Area Chamber of Com-merce Board. Bennett and Fisher will each serve as president after having served on their Chamber Board for sever-al years. “I feel very fortunate to work for an or-ganization that places value on contribu-tions to our community. I am both hon-ored and excited to serve my hometown in this capacity and I look forward to seeing what we accomplish this year,” said Fisher. “Bennett added, “It is important to give back to your community. I am very glad to be able to serve and understand how important ANC is to economic develop-ment which makes relationships with our local chambers a wonderful partnership.

DR. INTRES GIVES PRESENTATION ON THE SULTANA Dr. Louis Intres gave a presenta-tion on November 8, 2018 in the Adams/Vines Recital Hall about the Sultana, a steamboat that sank in the Mississippi River north of Mem-phis, Tennessee, in April of 1865. Several Arkansas Northeastern Col-lege students, faculty, staff, and administration were present for Dr. Intres’ presentation. For the past thirty years, Intres has researched the history of the boat and the lives of those who per-ished in what is now recognized as the largest maritime disaster in Unit-ed States history. His research of the tragic event has been published in several magazines and document-ed on the Travel Channel’s syndi-cated program, Mysteries at the Mu-seum, and a recent documentary produced by actor/producer Sean Astin and videographers Mike and Mark Marshall. The story about the Sultana is incredibly intriguing and is now referred to as one of the ten greatest forgotten stories in American history.

Dr. Louis Intres (LEFT) spoke about the steamboat Sultana as a guest of ANC History Professor

Dr. Jillian Hartley’s (RIGHT) United States History class.

Nucor Yamato Steel Employees Receive Core 4 Training

Fourteen Nucor Yamato Steel employees went through Core 4 training with Gary Barth of United Rentals in partnership with Ar-kansas Northeastern College’s The Solutions Group on October 16, 2018. These employees were trained and received operator certifi-cations in rough terrain forklift, counter balance forklift, aerial lift, and scissor lift. The training was fully funded by GREDF and Of-fice of Skills Development Funds.

Industrial Fire Brigade Training Held for Viskase Employees

In September, The Solutions Group held an industrial fire bri-gade training for em-ployees of Viskase. Training was provided by the Arkansas Fire Academy in conjunc-tion with the Arkansas Northeastern College. There were 35 partici-pants in the class which covered the necessary skills for basic firefighting. The training took place with the Great River Economic De-velopment Foundation covering 25% of the training cost.
