O n Thursday, June 8, 2017, Marine Corps Base

Hawaii’s Marine Corps Exchange (MCX) celebrated

its grand reopening with a ceremonial cutting of the ribbon

by the Base Commander, Col Killeen and blessing by

Chaplin Ridley. Throughout 2016, The Marine Corps

Exchange has been under transformation moving to the

established and successful MCX Brand. This branding

allows Kaneohe Bay to align much closer to Headquarters

Marine Corps and other MCX facilities Marine Corps-wide.

This includes, product selection, competitive pricing,

shared floor plans and plan-o-grams, purchasing power

and selection, faster replenishment and delivery of goods.

In 2016, the MCX underwent a renovation with the focus

on increasing “shopability” and visibility in the store. This

renovation cost $2 million with $650 thousand for fixtures

and signage and $1.3 million in actual construction costs.

Working in-house, the MCX staff installed all the

furnishings and fixtures - saving time and money better

used for the project. In addition, for the first time, MCCS

Hawaii contracted the MCCS team at Camp Pendleton to

complete the construction portion of the renovation. This

was a first for MCBH and MCCP. The partnership worked

well, resulting in finishing the renovation “on-time and

below- budget”. Hats-off to the Camp Pendleton

construction team for their assistance.

The emphasis for the renovation was the following:

• Create a “video-wall” in electronics to expand the

footprint and take out pillars to increase visibility in the

department.

• Increase the Customer Service Department by

opening several walls to create a more visible and

open area for guests, integrate cashiers and

consolidate cigarette sales.

• Expand Hawaiian gifts and food items. Hawaii is a

special place, our guest were looking for an expanded

offering of “made-in-Hawaii” items for sale.

• Enhance shoe and cosmetic sales with all new

self-service fixtures and increased brands.

• Build a firearms sales area from an existing video/

audio room. To meet the demand of firearms in

Hawaii, open the first military outlet for firearms and

ammunition. This area also includes an extensive

tactical gear offering.

The ceremonial ribbon cutting marked the start of a

weeklong celebration for the “new” MCX. Throughout the

week, over six thousand dollars in door prizes were given

away in daily drawings. On Saturday, June 10, 2017, the

MCX hosted a number of live entertainers, vendor

sampling, kiddie games, face painting and more

giveaways. The new MCX is officially opened at Marine

Corps Base Hawaii and the staff is excited about the new

facility and new offerings. We hope to see all of you at the

new MCX in Hawaii!
