Since 1999, Kymberlee Simantel and Wade Hodges have been a couple

devoted to staying inspired—by each other and by the beautiful landscape surrounding their home in the foothills of Virginia City. Kymberlee’s title on her business card is Inspiration Engineer, a phrase that captures her diverse career in Reno and the surrounding region. Originally from Chicago, Kymberlee followed her heart’s calling to move out to the “wild west,” drawn by the magnificence of mountains. “I was 19 years old when I moved to Nevada. When I first peeked over the Tahoe rim, it took my breath away. I knew I had found my home,” says Kymberlee. “There’s nothing like the openness of the skies here.”

Kymberlee’s first job in the area was as a meter reader for the gas company in Carson City. “She was actually the first female meter reader,” says Wade, highlighting Kymberlee’s adventuresome spirit. Her openness to

new professional experiences underpins her career’s unique trajectory. “I’ve had so many amazing life experiences due to being open to the possibilities and opportunities that presented themselves along the way.

Life as a single Mom led her to work in TV advertising, for Fox and then the NBC affiliate. It was there she discovered her passion for self-improvement and empowering others. This inspired her towards her next adventure, Leadership Training. She interned for a company and then began facilitating leadership and outdoor adventure training, and also became a program director for a non-profit for pregnant and parenting teens. “I love people, and love to help them discover their strengths and then connect them to what they need to live an empowered life. Connecting people has always been in my DNA. Always following my heart and somewhat of an idealist, I joke that I have an expiration

date of around 5 years on each venture.”

A Love for Leadership and a Natural Networker

As Kymberlee’s vision expanded, she founded Winning Ways for Life, a comprehensive consulting service that combined her skills as a natural networker and a heart-centered, intuitive empowerment coach. Her current endeavor also uses the additional tool of high quality essential oils from doTERRA to assist in helping individuals become healthier and revitalize. “My role involves coaching and consulting from a variety of perspectives, integrating spiritual, emotional and financial wellness all in the name of finding balance. It’s about helping people heal and find purpose from the inside out. I help people to connect to the tools and alliances they need to improve various aspects of their lives.” Wade adds that Kymberlee’s methods are down-to-earth and customized. “She’s authentic,” says Wade.

In 2005 Kymberlee saw a need for teaching people how to network more effectively and became the Director of eWomenNetwork in the Reno/Tahoe area for 7 years. EWomenNetwork is an organization that connects women in business and facilitates networking, showcasing their business and connecting them to a variety of resources. During her time at eWomenNetwork, Kymberlee earned recognition as managing director of the year internationally, and raised funds through their foundation to give 4 grants to local non-profits. “After 7 years, it was time to move on, and a wonderful new director, Annie Goni-Stewart, took the reins.”

With Winning Ways for Life’s focus on essential oils as an adjunct healing modality, Kymberlee has explored some wonderful new endeavors. She teaches clients and friends how to use the oils for aroma therapy and even for cooking. “Can you imagine—salsa made with the essential oil of cilantro? It’s a fascinating and fun way to heal and enhance life. It’s also so healing. I’ve worked with rough ranchers in rural Nevada who suffer from allergies and use the doTERRA oils to alleviate them. We’ve even got clients using our oils as they trek as far north as the Arctic Circle,” says Kymberlee. It would seem the uses for the potent oils are as vast as Kymberlee’s ability to make previously unseen connections among people and businesses as an Inspiration Engineer.

Exploration, Discovery and the Magic of RocksOriginally from the Pacific Northwest, Wade Hodges grew up

as part of an agriculture and timber family. “I was a bit strong willed and independent,” says Wade, “so naturally I couldn’t do the same things my family had been doing.” But Wade knew is life path would still lead through the great outdoors. “I had an insatiable curiosity about how rocks and mountains formed, how rivers flowed and how the oceans and the atmosphere worked. I developed a particular rapport with rocks, you might say. They’re like another language. A rock and its context tell amazing stories, if you know how to listen and understand the language. And the stories are all like giant mysteries waiting to be solved,” says Wade. He earned a Master’s Degree in Economic Geology at Oregon State University, but then had to figure out how to get paid for roaming around outdoors listening to rocks. “I was lucky enough to graduate at a time when gold was supposedly no longer valued as money, yet noticed that a lot of people still wanted to own some.” Wade

figured that with a little careful reasoning based on listening to the stories that the rocks told he could give a lot of people what they seemed to want and perhaps make a living doing what he loved.

Nevada had a long history of gold mining and there were no trees covering the rocks, so what better place to listen to rocks than the dramatic landscapes of Nevada. Wade says, “I was like a kid hunting for the treasure of the Sierra Madre. As it turned out, Nevada has the highest concentration of gold per unit area

of any place on the planet and I’ve been lucky enough to have found more than 30,000,000 ounces of the stuff in nine separate deposits, so have never really had to grow up. The gold mining industry is currently in a hiatus as the rate of new discoveries has fallen dramatically over the last ten years. But Wade believes, “The future of mining in Nevada is just nearing the end of the beginning. In Nevada, we have the topography and type of gravel cover where you can be standing on it and anywhere from 50 feet beneath you to as deep as 8,000 feet there are still large gold deposits waiting to be discovered. 60% of the best place on earth to look for gold has been hidden from view. Up until now, no one has been able to effectively ‘see through’ the gravel cover to the rocks and the hidden gold deposits below. Groundwater everywhere interacts with concealed bedrock and any hidden gold deposits and picks up a kind of chemical scent that can be tracked back to its source.” Wade is currently leading Nevada Exploration Inc. in the use of groundwater chemistry as the key to unlocking Nevada’s remaining gold deposits. “I’m in exploration and discovery, where my job is basically to identify those places where Mother Nature has messed up the rocks by depositing large concentrations of often noxious trace elements, so that we can go in and clean the place up. I’m of the opinion that extracting gold and other useful minerals is really just a by-product of good environmental policy.”

Wade speaks about rocks with the same passion that Kymberlee does about connecting others and doing healing work for individuals and businesses.

As a couple, the two share the values of maintaining a commitment to their respective passions in life, and being committed to each other in a spirit of complementing. “We share a similar spirit where plans are not always set in stone. We might decide we’re going on a road trip to the coast, but get sidetracked by stopping at a blackberry patch and then connecting with some wonderful people that weren’t technically part of any plan. Plan, of course, but be present to the unintended consequences of the plan, as they are often the most interesting parts of life,” says Wade.

A Dream Inhabited“That first image I had as a little girl of mountains and horses

out west—now I’m living that,” says Kymberlee. Her own two children were born in Carson City and grew up in south Reno. They then traveled the world and returned to the beauty of their

home region. Her son entered the mining industry and her daughter is a freelance graphic designer and artist. Wade’s two sons were raised in Carson, one moving to Seattle becoming a lawyer and one to Broadway in New York City, becoming a professional dancer.

Kymberlee and Wade continue to enjoy the little things and stay close to their hearts and dreams, living from a sense of inspired relating to each other and to others, always finding the true gold by connecting people, heart to heart and mind to mind.

Imagine being one of thirteen children,

and making your way from Ireland to the United States. Then try to imagine having four children and moving them from their home in Tonopah to San Francisco to make a living as a single mom. And then, imagine the year was 1920. Well, that is a true story and

that was my maternal great grandmother Jenny (McLaughlin) Jordan’s story. Jenny was herself an entrepreneur and in some small way, maybe I got some of my entrepreneurship from her. I’d like to think so, at least. Her business was making and selling whiskey from her attic. Well, it was illegal at the time but none the less, it was still a business. She made sure she kept her customers happy. She also created a business during a time of great struggle and decipher the pitfalls of a small business. Now, generations later, I navigating an ever changing business world to make my customers happy.

I have a blind, shutter and shade business, Divine Blinds, Inc. Looking back, I’m sure as a child I didn’t imagine saying this is what I wanted to do, but I did watch and help many of my relatives work businesses and succeed at their businesses. I watched them take pride in doing a great job for their customers, as I now do for mine.

A Love for Local Business, Hard Work and Reno RootsAlong with my great grandmother, I also had my paternal

grandfather and grandmother, William and Esther Canepa, native Nevadans, who succeeded at a very hard business; ranching. They started out running a dairy, with my

grandmother’s sister, Eve Canepa and my grandfather’s brother Louis Canepa. They then expanded to focus on beef cattle and selling alfalfa. They ran “Alpine Dairy” into the 70’s and then focused on beef cattle (Canepa ranch) until 1994. They sold the milk and beef to many locals. And, I watched as they persevered and overcame obstacles.

My maternal grandmother and grandfather, Mary and Ray Fleming, also had a local business after co-owning a Reno pharmacy, Skeel’s Drug, which they ran with my great aunt and uncle, Catherine & Silvio Guidici. Hansel and Gretel was a children’s clothing and shoe store on Virginia Street. It was a high quality store, catering to customer service, and staffed with knowledgeable personnel.

So, growing up I got to see a lot of businesses run first hand. My own parents, William and Gail Canepa, also opened up a boat shop in 1974. They called it, Marine Specialties. It is still in operation today, due to their hard work. When I decided to open Divine Blinds in 2005-with entrepreneurial spirit running through my veins-I thought, “How hard can it be?” Some call it strength, others may call it naivety.

Today, after 9 great years, Divine Blinds is still standing tall. It hasn’t been easy, especially with Nevada’s economy, but perseverance must be a family trait. Summer often takes the blame for common beauty conundrums. From frizzy hair to

sunburn, the season can interfere with putting our best face (and hair) forward. Here are some tried, tested and effective ways to beat the heat and beautify!

1. Protect Your Hair Add conditioner in your hair and tie it up or braid it before you dive into the pool. The chlorine water and ocean water can strip your hair of nutrients and make it dry. 3. Endings and Beginnings You can begin a summer hair routine by recognizing that conditioner is actually meant for the ends of your hair and not for your scalp. Shampoo is for your scalp to cleanse debris and oils. Conditioner is designed to give a moisturizing boost to the ends of your hair, where your hairs natural oils don’t easily travel. This technique will also help keep volume on the top of your hair and not weigh it down with conditioner which can cause a “flat” look.

4. Sunscreen for your Hair In summertime, seek hair products that include an SPF rating of 15 or above in order to prevent your scalp from burning in the hot sierra sunshine. Products like Tonic Lotion and Prep Lotion from Bumble and Bumble actually have added SPF for this reason. Think of your hair as an extension of your scalp skin and treat it kindly!

5. Tangled Up No More Hot weather and summer activities can mean added tangles in the hair. Take extra time each day to untangle. Comb or brush your long hair at least twice a day, paying special attention to the nape of the neck where long hair tangles tend to gather.

6. Beauty Tips are not Only for Women Men: if you want that surfer hair without the added fluff, don’t rinse out your conditioner this summer. Conditioner, for dry fluffy hair can act as a powerful de-fluffer.

The Top 6 Estate Planning MythsThroughout my years of practice as an estate planning

attorney, I have run across many misconceptions about wills, trusts, probate and estate taxes. Below you will find a list of what I consider to be the top six myths.

1. I don’t need an estate plan because my family will “do the right thing.” While you may feel confident that your family will “do the right thing” after you die and divvy things up in a fair and equitable manner without any major fights. I’m here to tell you that this simply will not happen. Strange and sad things happen when family and money collide without any written plans. A revocable living trust created with the help of an estate planning attorney can insure that your estate will go where you want it to go after you die. A Will is going to cost you more $ in legal fees and you’ll still go to Probate.

2. I don’t need an estate plan because my spouse will inherit everything. This may or may not be true depending upon many different factors, including: A). How your assets are titled; B). Who you have named as the beneficiaries of your life insurance and retirement accounts (IRAs and 401ks); C). The laws of the state where you live at the time of your death; and D). The laws of the state where you own real estate at the time of your death.

3. Only the mega wealthy need a complicated estate plan. Total MYTH. If you have a home, car and bank account, a trust is very affordable and is for you. If you are in a second or later marriage, you are single without any children, you are in a committed relationship but choose not to marry, or if you want to leave part or all of your estate to charity, then chances are that regardless of your net worth, you will need more than just a basic estate plan.

4. Probate really isn’t all that bad. The bottom line is probate is very costly and time consuming, so why would you want to leave your loved ones at the mercy of a probate judge who knows nothing about you, your finances or your family and pay more in legal fees?

5. “Death taxes” will take a big bite out of your estate. If you are talking about federal estate taxes, then this could not be farther from the truth. With a $5 million+ federal estate tax exemption, it has been estimated that less than 1/10% of estates will be subject to federal estate taxes. Nevada has NO death or inheritance tax.

6. Once your estate plan is done, it’s done for good. I have seen this myth rear its ugly head often. Why? Because things change. Do you own the same home you did 5 years ago? Have you remarried? *Millipedes, beetles, caterpillars, oh my! Nevada Bugs and Butterflies present the Bug Petting Zoo program which will be at the Northwest Reno Library on Tuesday, August 5 at 5 p.m.

*WildThings Inc. presents Animals of the World. This nonprofit wildlife rescue center provides live animal ambassadors from 5 different continents…including a kangaroo. This will be a fun filled engaging educational program for all ages. The Northwest Reno Library program will be held on Saturday, August 23th at 11:15 a.m.

*Author Mary Jo Sonntag will be on hand to share readings from her book: Write, If You Live to Get There. The true story of the Phillips family’s westward migration from Vermont to northern California is told through a collection of letters that paint a rich and detailed portrait of American life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This program will be held at the Northwest Reno Library on Wednesday, August 20 at 11 a.m.
