DESCRIPTION
In response to learner voice and a need to extend opportunities to enable access to and embrace the use of technology in lessons, Coleg Cambria has invested in a developing a 21st Century learning environment with a full wireless network coverage and an extensive range of mobile devices and projection facilities for classrooms. Learners are encouraged to bring their own devices to College, but to ensure inclusivity a range of equipment is available for use if needed. Alongside the investment in equipment was a drive to improve student experience, staff were supported to develop the use technology to engage and motivate learners and to support learning and assessment. In May 2013 Coleg Cambria (formerly Yale College) won the ColegauCymru Digital Learning Award (sponsored by Jisc RSC Wales). In June 2013, Estyn awarded its first FE College ‘excellent’ for teaching and learning, stating, ‘Trainer-mentors and teaching staff use ILT highly effectively to enhance teaching, learning and assessment. In the best cases, devices such as notepad computers and mobile phones are integrated into classroom and workshop activities. Teachers make good use of applications which allow, for example, instant assessment and feedback, links to further information resources using QR codes (Quick Recognition) and instant video replay to give feedback on practical tasks. ’ Through case study examples, the workshop explores the techniques and technologies used to enhance teaching, learning and assessment and the development of the flipped classroom. Delegates will have hands-on opportunities to try some of the activities and apps used.TRANSCRIPT

Connecting, engaging and motivating learners with mobile devices and apps
Over the past three years Coleg Cambria has
invested in developing a 21st Century learning environment. A campus wide wireless network is now installed across all six College sites, enabling learners to connect their own devices onto the Internet anywhere in College.
An extensive range of mobile devices (laptops,
chromebooks, tablet devices) were purchased to enable IT to be taken into classrooms rather than learners
using an IT classroom. The presentation provides case study examples on the use of mobile devices to support learning at Coleg Cambria.

“I can take ownership of my learning journey. I can add information regarding the course. This, we cannot do in Moodle very easily. It makes it easy for me to understand. Using Socrative and Google Drive helps me focus and progress” Engineering learner
“Video demonstrations are put on the Community which I can access on my phone during the session, we can access them straight away.” Floristry learner

Learner Experience“‘The iBook’s can be read and the videos watched in the evening right after a lesson, I’ve found it really helps me to remember what I have learnt. With the review questions at the end and the ability to double tap any word in the books and clarify the meaning it is so simple.’ Catering learner
‘It is great to have pictures, videos and lessons with more technology that’s here and now. Learnt lots more as more interesting.’ Construction learner
