As we look back over the past 15 months, it’s been a time of great highs coupled with humbling challenges. Who could have antici-pated what we are now facing as a community? Through it all, the Library and our donors have been bedrock, making sure that New Rochelleans have the resources needed today and into the future.

Our year began on a high. Our 25th Anniversary Gala, thanks to you, raised substantial funds making possible significant grants to our Library for vital projects. Projects included a $78,000 match for Phase 1 of a second-floor renovation, leveraging a NY State construction grant of $140,000. Other grants funded ten Early Childhood Literacy Stations, a new 1st Floor Information Desk, enhancements to the Lumen Winter Gallery, as well as dollars for popular programs like the Family Museum Pass Program.

Libraries Change LivesWhen the COVID pandemic barreled into our community, the Library responded quickly to meet community needs. Serving as an ESSENTIAL CONNECTOR, librarians and staff fielded hundreds of phone and online requests for resources. The Library immediately increased its online capabilities adding free access to hundreds of educational resources, books, magazines, movies and news including free access to The New York Times. A Curbside Pickup Service was instituted serving nearly 1,000 people in August alone. And, as an indicator of the central role of the Library in family life, the number of new library cards issued rose from 244 in May to 480 in August. (Continued on next page)

Our mission remains constant: to raise resources and provide advocacy to keep our Library vibrant, up-to-date, and able to serve the diverse needs of the New Rochelle community. Never has this been more important.

Today, more than 1,000 students in New Rochelle live in homes without Internet access. Consider what this means for students and parents struggling to keep up with the demands of online learning. In cooperation with the New Rochelle School District, the Founda-tion is helping the Library purchase loanable Mobile Hotspots that allow students and their families to tap into what is now an essential. In addition, the economic fallout has left many in our community unemployed. The Library’s Handelman Business Opportunity Center has been playing a critical role, providing remote counseling to help access benefits, research job opportuni-ties and get free one-on-one employment coaching.

¨ 10 Early Childhood Literacy Stations: Updated with the latest software in English and Spanish, these stations are now in the Main Branch and Huguenot Children’s Library.

¨ Learning Through Play Area: Created a dedicated play area in the Children’s Room in the Main Branch.

¨ Lumen Winter Gallery – New display lighting in this constantly used gallery located in the lobby of the Main Branch.

¨ Family Museum Pass: This tremendously popular program, providing patrons with FREE ADMISSION to the area’s most popular and expensive museums, has been funded by the Foundation for years.

¨ Teen Room: New user-friendly workspaces, 6 new laptops, private tutoring & meeting space will update this haven for teens.

¨ E.L. Doctorow Local History Room: Upgrades to climate control to protect valuable archival materials.

¨ Spanish Language Collection: Reconfigured and expanded in a central location to meet growing demand for these resources.
