Reading the RoomWhat is your comfort level?

Goals for today’s workshop:

Start a functional website that you can later perfect and present to parents at open house.

Download and practice using the iPad app Screenchomp to create ‘how to’ videos for your students and parents.

Learn how to create and use QR codes using the website www.snapvu.com

Share ways that the videos, QR, codes and classroom website could be used to benefit your students and their families.

To make a meaningful connection to our parents and students outside of the classroom.

Step #1: Formatting your website

1.Go to www.weebly.com and sign up for free using your school email account.

2.Select the FREE account option.

3.Select SITE as the focus of your site.

4.Select a theme (mine has a wood background because Forrest Elementary is “the place to grow”)

5.Name your site (use a subdomain of weebly - free)

Choose a name that is easy for parents and students to remember. Mine is forrestmath.

Pros • Many layouts• Has a mobile option for Smart phones• Basic statistical tracking is FREE• Quick, easy formatting• Straightforward

Cons • Creativity is restricted• Unable to create hyperlinks within images

Create a Dropbox Account

Sign up using your HCS email account

Step #2 – Creating a Video

1. Screenchomp

2. Link Dropbox to the Screenchomp app

3. Choose a background for your video (document, image, blank)

4. Create your video by speaking and writing as you might on your Promethean board. Once you’re finished hit the stop square.

5. Name your video something distinctive.

6. Share!

*To change a Word document to a PDF document choose ‘save as’ and then select PDF from your laptop*

Step #3 – Adding a Video1. Share the video with yourself but sending the

link to your email account.

2. Create a button on your webpage where you can link the website.

3. Copy the web address (highlight the address and then hit command C – to copy) of your video once you’ve opened it through your email.

4. Link the button by adding the web address (command V – to paste).

Step #4 – Connect with QR

snap.vu

1. Create an account at snap.vu

2. Choose ‘New Web Code’ – paste the web address of your video into the section titled ‘Website URL’ and then name it so that you know what it is.

3. Click the link ‘My Codes’

4. Open the QR image using the JPG option

5. Take a screenshot (command+shift+4)

6. Put into a Word document and resize to fit your need.

7. Print, cut, and tape it to your document before you make copies
