• For thousands of years new varieties of cultivated plants and domestic animals have resulted from selective breeding for particular traits

• breeders choose plants and animals with the most desirable traits to serve as parents for the next generation

• selective breeding has produced nearly all domestic animals, including cats, dogs, and horses, as well as most crop plants

For example, a dairy farmer might select and breed only the cows that are the most hardy and give the most milk, hoping to create a population with the desired characteristics
