to deliver ‘social gain’• Diverse, community-
focused, gives voice to local people (often seldom heard), cross-section of the community
What is community radio?
What is connect:transmit?• Using community radio to develop young
people’s speaking & listening skills• 4 community radio stations (+ Radio
Regen)– BCB (Bradford)– Preston FM (Preston)– Future Radio (Norwich)– Shmu FM (Aberdeen)
• All worked differently, with different groups
• Funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation
Outcomes of connect:transmit• 90% improved in speaking & listening skills; 65%
enhanced their community awareness• Biggest S&L increase was in ‘confidence’, followed by
‘adapting talking’ and ‘communicating clearly’• Results suggest project was most effective with
disadvantaged young people• CR staff/trainers enhanced their knowledge of working
with young people, and funding landscape• Developed relationships between CR stations and
educational/youth organisations
connect:transmit worked, so…
1. Community radio demonstrably works to develop speaking & listening skills
2. Fruitful partnerships can be built between CR stations and educational (and other) organisations
3. Collaborative, partnership projects work to bring in funding for CR stations and youth projects
