A Message From Rabbi Shpeen Invariably, during the early months of the summer, I am always asked, “Rabbi, when is Rosh Hashanah this year?” My immediate response would like to be, “On the first of Tishrei, on the same day it always occurs.” But I know from whence the question always comes.

Our secular calendar is solar based and the Jewish calendar is lunisolar. Since the holidays always have to occur in their right season (Sukkot during the fall and Passover during the spring), seven times in a nineteen year span (every two to three years), an additional thir-teenth month is added to our Jewish calendar (always prior to Passover) in order to keep in step with the astronomical seasons and our religious observance at the correct time. This year is particularly unique because Rosh Hashanah occurs almost as early as it can ever be and coincides with Labor Day weekend.

Whenever Rosh Hashanah does take place, the one thing that remains constant, is the spirit that it evokes in us as we usher in our High Holy Day season, followed immediately by our fall festivals.

Rosh Hashanah is literally the “birthday of the world” and is a joyous time when we all connect with family, faith and community. Rosh Hashanah inspires and motivates us to look inward, to reflect upon the year that is passed and to take stock of our lives. Rosh Hashanah also provides us with the opportunity to look ahead with a renewed sense of hope. No matter what we faced during the past year, no matter what

challenges were thrown our way, no matter what losses or hardships we had to endure, welcoming the New Year provides us the chance to start afresh, to set new goals, to anticipate new blessings and explore new opportunities. Similarly, we can make peace with those things that troubled us in the past and wipe the slate clean to begin anew. Like the rainbow after the flood, a symbol of our covenant with God, no matter how bad things might have been, we are a people who believe that hope springs eternal. The New Year always provides the promise of better days ahead.

Yet, on this Rosh Hashanah, still immersed in the world wide pandemic, still trying to navigate the changing tides of the storm, it makes it ever more challenging to remain hopeful despite all of the stress, anxiety, frustra-tion and loneliness COVID thrusts upon us. Never before have we felt that so much of our lives are totally out of our control. We are able to survive and we are able to better cope, in part, by focusing on how our cup of life is half full, not half empty.

August is always a very difficult and stressful month each year for me not only because of all of the High Holy Day preparations that need to be done but also because of the particular signposts of the losses I have experienced in my life.

But this August was different. The same week that marked the twelfth anniversary of Susan’s diagnosis which led to her death and on that same day the 11th anniversary of my father’s unexpected death, and the week prior to what would have been our forty-third wedding anniversary, I was blessed to welcome my fifth grandchild into the world. In the midst of my own personal sadness, new life, new joy, new hope came into my life.

So it is with Rosh Hashanah and the New Year. No matter what we have all been experiencing, both personally and as a society of humanity, there is always a rainbow at the end of a storm. There is always some-thing to look forward to with hope and with faith in tomorrow. This year, my dear little Everett Myles Shpeen taught me this precious lesson as I anticipate the New Year ahead. When I first held him in my arms, it was as if all of the troubles of the world stood still for a moment and the blessings of a new life helped put everything else into perspective.

From my home to yours and from my growing family to yours, my heartfelt good wishes for a happy, healthy and sweet New Year!

L’shanah Tova Tikateivu!! Rabbi Scott Shpeen

Be Nice. You Nice. Pass it on ☺ Be Nice and You Nice. It comes more naturally to some, than others. My mother’s name was BErNICE and my mother-in-law’s name is EUNICE. For many years I have had the good fortune of being surrounded by two of the nicest people I have ever known. I certainly hope it rubbed off a little.

In difficult times there is so much good that Beth Emeth does. Last week around 3:00 pm on Friday afternoon. I picked up my phone. “Hi Kathy. I am driving back from my cousin’s funeral and I was wondering if it is too late

to add his name to the Kaddish list?” I expressed my condolences and said, “no problem at all,” and then explained how she could listen to her cousin’s name recited via Live Stream right in her car as she was making the long drive home. “It is so nice that you are there for me.” The congregant didn’t mean me, she

A New Year

Summer is a time to recharge our batteries and to connect with family and friends. Perhaps most importantly in New York State, it is a time to also appreciate the sunshine. It appears the rain had other plans for us this summer but I still hope that everyone was able to enjoy the season and to see – in-person – those whom we were not able to during the COVID restrictions.

It appears that the emotional and physi-cal roller coaster of the pandemic may not be over for some time. We have all learned to adapt and to overcome the many challenges with kindness, patience, planning and then more and more planning!

This is true, now more than ever, with the High Holy Days upon us. We have been working with the reality of the late summer surges to ensure a safe in-

person environment for the High Holy Days. You have already received communication about this but please know how much time, consideration and effort goes into trying to create and to maintain a safe “new normal” that works for our Congregation.

We are also closely monitoring the CDC and New York State guidelines for schools as our children re-enter the secular and religious school year. We will have to be flexible and adapt where needed - knowing full well that our goal is for our children to have an immersive and social Jewish education.

The year ahead is going to be an important one. Not only will we continue to navigate the COVID world, but the future of our beloved Beth Emeth is nothing short of monumental. As you will hear during my. remarks on Rosh Hashanah, the coming year will see the beginning of the celebration of Rabbi Shpeen’s rabbinate and his long and amazing tenure here at Beth Emeth. We will also be introducing our new Rabbi during this next year. As you know, the Rabbinic search process is well under way and it is a very exciting time. The Rabbinic Search Committee and the leadership of the temple will be meeting with candidates in the coming months with more great news to share after that time.

This past year, our community showed its vibrancy and strength. This next year, we will build upon that and we will move forward on solid footing and with the knowledge that we can and we will overcome challenges while enjoying what we love about our temple; the family community, the holidays and rituals, the compassion and love. I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. Lshana tova tikateyvu – May you be inscribed in the book of life.

Welcoming Cantor Kohn

On Friday, July 23, over 60 people enjoyed a TRG sponsored Dinner, to FINALLY welcome our talented Cantor Kohn and her family to our CBE. Better late than never, with wonderful food prepared by Brotherhood and good times had by all!

Diane’s Farm We have been putting our land to good use here at Diane’s Farm and there has been a lot going on that folks can feel good about. A successful garden like this relies on its caring volunteers to tend and nurture the crops while problem solving the variables that make or break a season. This growing season began with lots of nibbled seedlings and for a moment I doubted its future, but together we turned it around and have had productive harvests including radishes, strawberries, lettuce, beets, kale, garlic, squash, beans, potatoes and cucumbers. All of this food has been distributed to local soup kitchens and food pantries plus there is a fall bumper harvest on the way.

But of course there is still so much more! The product (food) is needed and according to the folks we deliver to (The Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, The Sal-vation Army, Catholic Charities to name a few) it’s greatly appreciated. This said, I was asked recently by a long time committed volunteer if I thought that this work and space really made a difference, or would a financial donation to the regional food pantry be wiser? No surprise to either of us, my answer is a definitive “Yes!”

The effort contributed is well worth the end results: not only the tangible veggies we donate, at Diane’s Farm friendships are formed. Relationships strengthen when you commit time and energy working side by side. When we come out together we have an opportunity to connect with one another in nature and we are learning to communicate with the land. It isn’t always pretty or easy but it is essential to our global health to learn this language of cooperation. Please feel free to come by and lend your helping hands to ours and we can dig in together

Tikkun Olam Healing the World This year, in addition to our continued advocacy work with Religious Action Center (RAC)-NY, the Social Action Committee will be working on creating and building partnerships with local organizations that pro-vide direct services in our community. Please let us know of a project, activity or event that’s important to you. We want to hear your ideas! Our Voices Matter: CBE members were among the hundreds on a RAC-NY Zoom call on August 1 with Sen. Schumer to advocate for the passage of two voting rights bills, For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Ad-vancement Act. These bills help ensure that all Amer-icans can safely and freely cast their ballots so that every voice is heard and our elections reflect the will of the people. The goal was to pressure Sen. Schumer to do everything possible, including changing the Senate filibuster rules, to make sure, as he proclaimed to our own Abby Nash, that “failure is not an option,” and the voting rights bills pass. Thanks to the more than 700 voices he heard from, his closing words suggest we accomplished our goal: “The fact that you were here, the fact that you have my back, the fact that you are pushing so hard on something I so devoutly believe in, gives me strength.” Help address food scarcity in our community:

The Renaissance Group Be a Part of TRG TRG has just celebrated its 6-year anniversary. While there are many congregants familiar with the group, this is a perfect time to take a step back and review its purpose and mission. For many members, their connection to the temple is centered around their children’s activities and Jewish education but what happens after graduation? The “empty nest,” while presenting a void, is also a moment of opportunity to revisit old interests and make new connections with others at the same stage in their lives. In the six years since inception, there are many congregants who are now ready to make this exploration and we hope you will look to TRG to enrich your CBE experience. Our events are open to all, and we hope that you will find our programming a great mix of Jewish Education, cultural events and recreation. Watch for activities in the temple weekly emails and our special TRG newsletters. If you wish to get more involved, please join our planning committee.

Hope to see you at an event soon! Joe Schwartz, TRG Chair

Brotherhood

Join Us! L’Shana Tovah. The New Year is upon us. As we review the past year and go through the process of atonement, what can we do differently in this New Year?

I am working through the discomforting news about an uptick in COVID-19 related to the Delta variant. It makes planning a bit more dicey. The Brotherhood will certainly continue our tradition of feeding a hungry congregation in whatever form makes sense. We will have a Chanukah Celebration of some form. It may be our traditional one, but it may take a new form.

The Brotherhood Board will be doing more reaching out to get more of you involved in participating in our activities and/or planning activities and programs.

We will be sponsoring in-person and Zoom activities, discussions and meetings to maintain our community. We are excited about the challenges and opportunities for growth and service this new year will bring.

We hope you will choose to be a part of it. Barry Z. Davis, 518.237.5553

Counting Our Blessings Volunteers are the Best! What would Beth Emeth do without our wonderful volunteers? They are truly blessings to us all! This month I'd like to "count" and give a heartfelt thanks to Sue Wollner who has been our "press" editor for these past few years. Sue retired from her work as a teacher and almost immediately offered to help with this ex-tremely important task. So, if you've read an article in the Jewish World both via mail as well as email, or saw a photo from Beth Emeth -- that was Sue hard at work. She also wrote for other area publications and helped get the word out about all that we do at Beth Emeth. THANK YOU Sue and we wish you and David all the best as you enjoy your retirements together.

The Rabbinic Search Committee continues to move forward in the search for our congregation’s next Senior Rabbi. We are pleased to let you know that in July, the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), the organization that governs the search pro-cess for identifying and recruiting rabbinical candi-dates, accepted our application and posted it on their website. Since then, resumes have been received and reviewed by the Rabbinic Search Committee. In early fall, the committee will be conducting preliminary zoom interviews with several highly qualified candi-dates. The interview questions are being composed based on YOUR responses from participating in Focus Groups and from completing the Survey. THANK YOU for your ongoing support! Stay tuned for more updates in next month’s bulletin. And as always, please feel free to contact us with any questions! On behalf of the Rabbinic Search Committee, we wish you and those whom you hold dear, a happy, sweet, safe and healthy New Year! L’shanah tovah!

All b’nai mitzvah participate in candle lighting and Kiddush at services on the Friday evening prior to their bar or bat mitzvah.

Hadassah Leila Harrell, daughter of Rebecca Harrell and Aaron Harrell, will become a bat mitzvah on Saturday, September 18. Hadassah is an honest, loving, enthusiastic, and driven young lady. She is very passionate and spends her free time singing, dancing, performing, and creating art. Hadassah enjoys caring for

and snuggling with her animals at home in her "mini zoo." She is very dedicated and hard working and eager to volunteer to help others whenever possible. Most importantly, Hadassah prides herself on being Jewish and looks forward to doing her part to make the world a better place.

The Einhorn Center for Jewish Education Awe and Wonder In Avot 5:22, the Mishna teaches, Ben Bag Bag said: “Turn it over, and [again] turn it over, for all is therein.” Meant as a reference to Torah, the practice of studying year after year, the cycle of learning, and ending and beginning again.

Each year we begin Torah anew, with a “new set of eyes” as the words of Torah remain the same, but we change and grow.

As I am writing this column from Israel, on my I don’t know what number trip, the words of Ben Bag Bag are striking me as equally applicable to this magnificent country as they are to Torah. The awe and wonder I feel about being surrounded by a rich atmosphere of Hebrew and Jewish culture in a vibrant thriving country, is just as strong as it was on my first visit during my teens. Sitting at a coffee shop, people watching, I notice the clothing styles and sophistication has changed, yet the wholesomeness and comfort is all the same. Like every other country, Israel has been greatly affected by the coronavirus. Many of my favorite shops and restaurants have now closed. However, there is an overwhelming spirit of hope and growth.

This study program I am completing on this trip has

introduced me to, and opened me up to, some new and incredible experiences. I have learned about some of the deeper complexities within Israeli society, marginalized populations, and met amazing activists and artists working to create platforms giving a voice to the potential of tomorrow. Yes, there is conflict. Yes, there is complexity. Most of all though, there is a real country here, struggling and growing and unbelievably thriving.

My learning never stops. I turn it over and over again - turning it over and finding I am only filled with greater awe, wonder, and pride for this phenomenal land I love.

May the words from the seder ring true - next year in Jerusalem!

Shara Siegfeld, Director of Lifelong Learning

The Education Committee In August, our young families enjoyed a wonderful evening under the stars with fun games, a beautiful Havdalah service led by Cantor Kohn and an outdoor movie (Yes Day), complete with a CBE Concession Stand. A great time was had by all!

(continued from page 5) she meant Beth Emeth collectively. She had a loss, was feeling terrible, but she knew she was not alone. We are a community where together we say Kaddish for our loved ones.

Last year, when some of our congregants were not able to get out, the Ritual Committee made calls to make sure everyone was ok. I witnessed a beautiful friendship develop between a lifelong member and a newer member. The younger family brought the gentlemen their own picnic table, laid out a beautiful dinner and they sat outside for the High Holy Days last year and watched services. The friendship blossomed with Hanukkah and Passover spent together and they con-tinue to check in on one another.

This will be my 9th High Holy Day season at Beth Emeth. It is 3 weeks away and things are still so up in the air. The clergy, the Board of Trustees and staff have worked really hard to have a safe environment for you.

Due to the Delta variant, unfortunately, we have had to implement protocols to ensure that as a community we are all safe. I so appreciate hearing via the telephone, emails or Facebook the affirmations from congregants that they are in support of all that we are doing.

Please give yourselves a pat on the back. 5781 was a very difficult year. We at CBE are there for each other and continue to be kind and nice to one another. We also all need to be kind to ourselves.

I know from the good examples that were set by my mother and mother-in-law, that being nice to others has the added benefit of making you feel good about your-self. That good feeling, in turn, pays it forward to nicer interactions with your community as a whole.

I wish you a Year filled with only “nice” things- good health, special moments with family and friends and lots of smiles.
