Infinitive forms of Verbs

• In English, the infinitive forms of all the verbs are preceded by the word ‘to’: to speak, to eat, to live etc.

• In Spanish, the infinitive forms of all the verbs end in either –ar, -er or –ir.

Conjugation of Regular Verbs

• Conjugation refers to the change the verb makes in order to accommodate the subject of the sentence.

• In English, there is not that much of a conjugation. For example:

• I speak• you speak• she speaks• we speak• you speak

• they speak.• In Spanish, when conjugating verbs, there are 6

different verb ending that correspond to each subject pronoun.

How to apply?• You take the verb that ends with –ar.

(Hablar).• Take of the last two letters in hablar

(-ar). You are left with (Habl-).• (Habl-) is the verb base.• Apply the following formula:

Making a sentence negative

• To make an affirmative sentence negative, simply add no directly before the verb.

Ex: Yo no hablo portugués.I don’t speak Portuguese.

No escuchas la radio.You don’t listen to radio.

• Marcos lives in Montana. His mother works(trabajar) in a school where she teaches music and Phys.Ed. In the morning she plays piano (tocar el piano), sings(cantar), and practices with the band (la banda). In the afternoon, her students and she run(correr) and walk(caminar) a lot and at times, they dance. His father works (trabajar) in a bakery (la panaderia). He prepares and sells (vender) bread. He enters (entrar en) the bakery early morning, puts (poner) the bread in to the oven (el horno), and waits (esperar). While (mientras) he waits, he reads a newspaper (el periodico), watches tv, listens to radio (la radio), or studies Spanish. He writes and speaks well. He admits (admitir) that sometimes he takes a nap (echar una siesta) but he does not admit when he makes a mistake (commeter un error). He receives (recibir) many compliments (el cumplido). Many people (gentes) in Montana buy and eat the bread from the bakery.

Translation• Marcos vive en Montana. Su mamá trabaja en una

escuela donde enseña música y educación física. En la mañana ella toca el piano, canta y practica con la banda. En la tarde, sus estudiantes y ella corren y andan mucho y a veces bailan. Su papá trabaja en una panadería. El prepara y vende pan. El entra en la panadería muy temprano en la mañana, mete el pan en el horno y espera. Mientras, él espera, lee el periódico, mira la tele, escucha la radio o estudia español (él escribe y habla muy bien). El admite que a veces echa una siesta pero no admite cuando comete un error. Recibe muchos cumplidos. Muchas personas en Montana compran y comen pan de la panadería.
