Congress Edges out Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, and ISIS in Popularity
Raleigh, N.C. – Congress continues to be very unpopular- with only 12% of voters approving of the job it’s doing to 77% who disapprove. But we found several people/entities on our newest national survey that have even lower ratings- Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, and ISIS. Bieber is viewed unfavorably at 10/67, Brown at 10/52, and ISIS at 5/81. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell enjoys slightly higher approval ratings with 16% of voters approving of the job he has done. John Boehner’s job approval rating is at 22%. “Congress continues to be about as unpopular as it could possibly be,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “But at least it can hang its hat on being a little bit more popular than Justin Bieber and ISIS. For all that’s made of Barack Obama’s unpopularity he runs laps around John Boehner and Mitch McConnell.” Other popular musicians experienced much higher favorability numbers than Bieber and Brown. Taylor Swift is viewed favorably to unfavorably at 54/15, as is Justin Timberlake. Beyoncé and Lady Gaga are viewed favorably at 41/28 and 42/32, respectively. Rihanna is thought of unfavorably by 30% of voters, compared with 28% of those who view the Barbados-born singer favorably. Women viewed each musician more favorably than men, most notably viewing Timberlake more favorably at 60/12 than men at 46/19. Voters are less certain of their opinions on recent debates regarding controversial legislation. Respondents support the USA Freedom Act 26/14 leaving 61% who are unsure about the measure which addresses key aspects of metadata collection under the Patriot Act. This support is bipartisan with Republicans supporting the act 23/14 and Democrats favoring at 32/11. A lower percentage of voters are unsure how they feel about the Trans Pacific Partnership at 53%, with voters opposing the agreement 18/29. Overall, there is wide support for including more Americans in the election process. 67% think it would be a good thing if all Americans showed up to vote in November. There is also support for automatic voter registration upon each citizen’s 18th birthday, 48/38. Public Policy Polling surveyed 1,129 voters nationally between June 11th and 14th. The margin of error for the overall survey is +/-2.9%. 80% of participants responded via the phone, while 20% of respondents who did not have landlines conducted the survey over the internet.
