The exposed section is 50 m x 10 m to 50 m x 15 m. The quality of the
backfill is the result of a high percentage 40% (-) 20 microns fines as shown
in Figure 4, and the mix recipe consisting of Portland cement and slag. The
paste at 200 mm slump and 73.5% solids has a density of 1860 kg per
cubic meter.
The strength of placed backfill is a UCS 300 to 410 kPa at 28-day cure. In
narrow vein workings, stope dimension is 60 m L x 3 m W x 25 m H. The
UCS requirement is 70 to 110 kPa

The design objectives were accomplished several ways,
namely:
Production of thickened tailings to 60% solids from 10%
solids in feed, 110 tph dry solids.
Filtered cake at moisture content equivalent to less than the
7.5” slump, allowing the control of the slump within the
desired range, after the addition of dry binders and water;
cemented paste being75% solids consistency.
Slag material as partial substitute to Portland cement;
ground slag is produced from the slag wastes of the mine’s
affiliate tin concentrate smelter.
Backfill of the old stopes and recovery of ore pillars (old and
recent ones).
Disposition 82% of the total tailings as paste backfill, and
the balance % as thickened tailings to surface.
Reductions of the waste rock disposal to surface as the
result of co-disposal with the paste fill.
Reduction of the volume of tailings containing pyrites to the
surface storage facility.
Recirculation of the clear thickener overflow to the mill for
immediate re-use.
Reduction of the risk of environmental contamination, as
the result of the significantly less volume of water for
treatment and thickened tailings sent to surface storage
facility.
Cut down on dam raise requirements.
The application of cemented paste backfill technology saw
continuing improvement since the first system was placed in
operation in the high Andes in late 1990´s. For, in 2001 the San
Rafael mine applied the technology through stages of a project
from the options trade-off, testwork program on the tailings
material, phasing in feasibility detailed engineering,
construction, commissioning and start-up with a continued
support of the consultant. In such an approach it saw the need
to balance the total tailings between surface as dewatered
tailings and the backfill.
Advances in thickening technology, the trend to higher recovery
of the water the tailings facilities made possible the
implementation of tailings disposal to underground as paste
backfill and as dewater tailings to surface
Ensayos desulfurización y geoquímicos de relaves
Hallazgos:
