Both are highly-acclaimed and multi- award-winning films. "Noodle" opens the film fest at 3:00 p.m. in the May Chapel. This crowd- pleasing film features Miri, a twice-widowed, 37-year-old El Al flight attendant. Her well-regulated existence is sud- denly and unexpectedly turned upside down when her Chinese cleaner leaves her 6-year-old son with Miri for an hour...and never comes back. Noodle (the adorable boy) doesn't speak Hebrew or English, so it's not easy for Miri and her sister to figure out where he lives and what happened to his mother. A few weeks ago, in a very tragic turn of events,a group of spiritual seekers in Arizona lost theirlives because they spent too much time in a sweatlodge. Following a practice of some NativeAmerican tribes, the intended idea was to stay longenough in a sweat lodge to induce a spiritual vision-producing state among participants. A sweat lodgeis not a shvitz. Sitting in a sweat lodge is an ordeal.Spending time in a shvitz is a m’chayyah.

The Shvitz (steam room) is a very interestingplace. Consider for a moment all of the movies inwhich a steam room scene is present. I can think ofabout a dozen without even breaking a sweat.Three of those were Roman Empire epics. By far,the most creative dramatic steam room began as aplay and found new life as a “made for PublicTelevision fundraising” drama featuring ValeriePerine and Bill Bixby. Of course, I am referring toBruce J. Friedman’s Steambath. Most people remem-ber Ms Perine’ s bath towel role. Few remember thatFriedman was writing a work of theology. His steamroom was a vestibule to life after death. With nothought toward political correctness, God was por-trayed as a Puerto Rican steam bath attendant.Every doubt and question about the existence, goodness, and justice of God was raised in thesharp, no holds barred conversation that swirledwith the steam. What is it about steam rooms thatmakes people loquacious?

The shvitz at the new J is a case in point. It picksup just where the old J shvitz left off—-same play-ers, updated setting. With pulses of fresh steam, inless than five minutes, people are introduced to oneanother; establish who knows who’s relatives; calcu-late one another’s net worth; conduct ZAGAT quali-ty restaurant reviews; decide on Ram’s draft choic-es; ban Mark Maguire from the Hall of Fame; pro-pose a solution to Middle East peace. There are afew community Boards I know that might benefitgreatly by conducting their meetings in a shvitz. Itkeeps things moving right along.

On a personal level, the shvitz keeps me ground-ed in reality. The conversation with a St. Louisnative runs something like this:

“Oh, you’re a rabbi? What shul? Temple Israel?Where’s that?”

It matters not how long you have been doingimportant things for a great congregation and com-munity. There are still people out there who havenever heard of you. It is a powerful spiritualmoment—-an opportunity to consider carefully whatyou did in your life that will be worthy of beingremembered—-outside the shvitz.

If Not Now, When?by Rabbi Amy Feder

On the cover of a recent edition of The New Yorkermagazine, there was a four-panel cartoon depictingPresident Obama. In the first three panels, Obama ispictured approaching from afar, walking serenely onwater. In the final panel, he takes a false step andplunges into the depths, a look of surprise on his face. The message was clear--the President, viewed by somany as a savior, appears to have lost his magic, andwe, as a result, have lost our faith.

Regardless of one's political stance, many of us canadmit that the feelings of hope and excitement thatswept the country a year ago have dissipated. Theleader whom large numbers of people around the worldbelieved could walk on water, or at least come close, has not yet succeeded in the ways we had hoped. Yet,as the cartoon and many commentators have pointedout, were our expectations too high to begin with? Weelected Obama as president, not messiah. Placed sohigh on a pedestal, should we be surprised when, onoccasion, our heroes and leaders stumble and fall?

In the Torah, the depictions of our Jewish heroes andleaders are undeniably flawed, and this is done withintention. Through their failings, we are meant to findit easier to identify and sympathize with our ancestors. It is a comfort to know that even Rebecca struggledwith parenthood, that Jonah experienced depression, that Moses had anger management problems. When weread the stories of our people's heroes and see theirweaknesses along with their strengths, we often find iteasier to accept our own faults while still striving forgreatness.

Yet there is a danger in focusing on the faults of ourheroes and leaders, too. A few weeks ago, in aB'yachad program with 6th graders and their families, groups of students and parents were asked to sharewhat they knew about the biblical patriarchs and matri-archs. One father shared how disturbed he was at hisgroup's responses: they discussed Sarah's jealousy,Joseph's egotism, Isaac's weakness. Have we taken ourteachings too far in the other direction, encouragingour students to focus only on the faults of our leadersand heroes? If we are too honest about the negativetraits of those we are meant to respect, do we lose thejoy and hope that comes from having faith in heroes?

The answer, whether looking at the leaders of ourpast or our present, goes back to the idea that all of usare made b'tzelem Elohim, in the image of God. Wemay have faults and weaknesses, but having been madein God's image, we all have the potential for greatness, even perfection. May we always strive to be the bestand godliest version of ourselves, and to rememberthat every day offers each of us, presidents, heroes, and ordinary folks alike, the chance to reach that poten-tial.

CHUTZPAH d¨R§vgby Rabbi Michael Alper

A few weeks ago at Shabbat services, a group ofConfirmation students from a nearby UCC churchjoined us for a brief tour of the Temple and services.Their leader was a young man called Pastor Bob withboundless energy and a purple streak in his hair, theresult of a recent overnight with his teenage students.Following the service, Pastor Bob came up to me toshare his appreciation, and he asked me, "Is theregoing to be Fellowship now?" I looked at him blanklyfor a moment, trying to figure out his meaning. "Oh,you mean the Oneg," I answered, to which he nowreturned my blank stare. A student finally leaned into our conversation and bridged the language barrier."Its all about the juice and cookies," she said.

And she was right. Often, the most importantmoments that happen within any congregation are theones that happen during our most casual, unstruc-tured moments. Catching up over cookies at theOneg, hanging out on the Bridge on Sunday morningswhen TIFTY is selling bagels and coffee, sharing pop-corn and Evie Bernstein's amazing baked goods eachTuesday with the Retirees; these are the momentswhen our community is at it's best, and often when Ihave the most opportunities to truly be a rabbi forpeople.

You may notice that most of these events seem tocenter around food. While food is certainly not arequirement for a meaningful moment, the presenceof food allows people to feel comfortable, at ease, and as a result, more open to sharing what is in theirhearts and minds. A worship service may touch yoursoul, a class may challenge you to think, but moreoften than not, it's those few extra moments youshare in the hallways that give you the glow of feelingwarm and welcomed.

Pastor Bob's term for these experiences, "fellow-ship", is a wonderful way to think about thesemoments. When we take the extra time to share, tohave a conversation, we experience the joy of know-ing that we are not alone, that there are others in ourcommunity who want to hear the stories of our livesand offer theirs in return.

So the next time you're at Temple, whether drop-ping off your child for Religious School or coming to aprogram or service, take a little time for fellowshipand meet some of the people already in your commu-nity. And while you're at it, have a nosh. After all, itis all about the juice and cookies.

Adapted by Rabbi Shawn Zevit from a prayer by Bradley Burston,Israel News as found on the urj.org webside

A prayer for the people of Haiti, who, on a good day, must take heroic measures just to wake the next, And who must now find a way to live through the end of the world:

Compassionate One whose relief work is beyond our capabilities Breathe life today into those buried alive and strengthen the response capacityof Your relief workers in this worldTo hear those who have yet to be saved, To hear those who have been saved but whose limbs and lives are crushed, To hear those who pray For those who can no longer pray for themselves.

Source of Speech, embedded in the language of love Fortify the souls of those who call out now in rescue Life Force, expressed in the language of loss Send strength to those who, with their last strength Now seek nothing more than finding loved ones

A prayer for the people of Haiti, who on this day take heroic measures just to survive, And with the world's help,Will find a way to live into an new world,Though one rebuilton the rubble of unfathomable loss.Source of Response to need Be the blessingOf prayers realized

A new book crossed my desk this week. SacredParenting: Jewish Wisdom and Practical Guidance forYour Family's Early Years is a well written and accessi-ble guide to parenting babies and young children. The author, Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman, uses wordsof Torah and Rabbinic Literature to guide readers toparent with spirituality as well as common sense.Topics range from mealtime and bedtime to disciplineand teaching values. She approaches talking to ourchildren about God and incorporating Jewish ritualinto our lives.

There are a lot of good parenting books out there, but not many that integrate the best practices of ourtime with the best lessons from our Jewish tradition. The book starts with the premise that parenting isholy work. What a fabulous lesson for all of us toremember when our infant wakes up five minutesafter we finally fall asleep, when our toddler com-pletes a work of art on the kitchen wall, or ourteenager becomes defiant. We are doing holy work!

When you think about our ancestors as role models, some of you may feel that some of our patriarchs andmatriarchs may be found lacking in the parentingdepartment. Are we truly proud of Abraham's obedi-ence to God in the matter of his son's sacrifice? WasRebecca wise to choose Jacob over Esau and helpJacob cheat his brother out of his inheritance? Onone level, our imperfect ancestors may give us hopethat perfection is not a requirement of successful par-enting. We can all make mistakes without sentencingour children to a life of therapy. On another level, rabbinic teachings can help us delve into otheraspects of our ancestors' stories and learn from them.As an example, the book uses Abraham's celebrationof Isaac's weaning and some rabbinic comments onthat celebration to encourage us to plan appropriatecelebrations of important milestones in our children'slives.

One of my favorite parts of the book would be thesuggested blessings that can become a part of ourroutines with our children. Saying Shehecheyanuwhen they do something for the first time, reciting ablessing for healing when your child is ill, or singingShma as a lullaby at bedtime are beautiful ways ofweaving Judaism into the fabric of your lives.

Sacred Parenting is a new addition to the ReligiousSchool's Rosenkranz Library. I hope that some of youwill want to check it out.

Could it possibly be March? Does that mean thatspring is right around the corner and the dark cold daysof winter are soon to end? Spring bulbs are gettingready to pop out of the ground, and there is a fresh feel-ing in the air!

DECC began this time of year with the celebration ofPurim. This is a favorite holiday at the preschool. Wehad a Purim parade and the students all dressed up incostumes. We made Purim treats for our mishloachmanot bags and sent them to our friends and families. The older classes baked hamantaschen and acted out thestory of Ester and Mordecai, while our graggers drownedout the evil Haman's name! We teach our students to bevery brave like Ester and Mordecai. They acted on whatthey believed in, and saved the Jewish people. Welearned that we all have the right to be ourselves!!

DECC is also inviting all Dads and/or Granddads totake their DECC student/students to preschool onWednesday, March 3 and stay for breakfast. Breakfastwill begin at 8:15 a.m. What a great way for Dads orGranddads to start out their day.

Our Conservation for Critter event is on Sunday,March 7. We invite the entire congregation to attend thisevent that focuses on our world around us. It is anannual event that brings together conservation mindedgroups together to better educate the general publicabout our wonderful world! We will have such groups asthe St. Louis Zoo, the Butterfly House, and GatewaySearch Dogs, just to name a few. It is an interactiveevent and YOU can become part of the exhibit by touch-ing animals, playing games, and gathering information. The event will take place from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.DECC is so excited to be hosting this event this year andhope that you will join us and learn about our naturalwonders!

Camp Shook registration is underway and there areso many new and exciting things for camp this year. This year the camp will be for kids ages 6 month to 6years. We are offering a Parent/Child swim class forcampers under age 3 AND a Parent/Child KIDZROCKclass. These will be special summer mornings for youngchildren to spend with a parent or caregiver. Also newthis year is our YMCA certified swim program for allcampers age 3 and older. All campers will also benefitfrom our exciting KIDZROCK musical program! Congregation Temple Israel is pleased to announcethe establishment of the Rabbi Mark L. Shook Fund forLifelong Jewish Learning. Rabbi Shook is well knownboth at Temple Israel and throughout the communityas a master teacher. "He is truly a teacher for all gen-erations," says Deborah Morosohk, NATE, Director ofEducation. He is as comfortable working with theyoungest preschoolers as he is teaching adults. Rabbi Shook captivates young children with his story-telling and puppetry skills, particularly his portrayalsof the Sesame Street characters Cookie Monster andElmo. He has that special talent that enables him toconnect with children while at the same time keepingtheir parents engaged with subtle touches of adulthumor. Adults who have studied with Rabbi Shook marvel athis encyclopedic knowledge. "He never uses notes,"marvels congregant Bob Schnurman, a regular inRabbi Shook's Saturday morning Bible Study class. Rabbi Shook is a firm believer in the importance oflifelong Jewish learning, and throughout his rabbinatehe has made sure that adult education opportunitiesare varied and plentiful at Temple Israel. A classtaught by Rabbi Shook is virtually assured of beingwell attended. His sessions at the Temple's TuesdayInstitute and Sunday Series adult education programsare always popular. The Rabbi Mark L. Shook Fund forLife-long Jewish Learning will support existing adulteducation programs at the Temple and will further the

congregation's commitment to lifelong learning. The creation of the Rabbi Mark L. Shook Fund forLifelong Jewish Learning is just one facet of "AreMARKable Weekend: Celebrating the Rabbinate ofMark L. Shook. The celebration weekend, culminatingin a festive dinner at the Hilton St. Louis FrontenacHotel on Saturday, June 5, will serve as Temple Israel'sprimary fundraising event of the year, taking the placeof the annual August gala dinner-auction.
