Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim December 1999 Yol 35 No 6 22 Ki slev 5760 RABBI REACTS ... About a month ago at services, I shared my thoughts about the need for ten ( 10) people--and no fewer, to make up a minyan. A minyan is a quorum needed for a public synagogue service and to recite certain portions of the service, such as reading the Torah and reciting the kaddish. Traditionally this quorum is made up of ten Jewish males thirteen years and up. In our Reform Jewish tradition, we equally count women for the ten, and some communities don't even require ten. I have mixed feelings on this topic. Back in my days at Brandeis University, I volunteered to be one of those persons called to be the tenth for the Conservative Egalitarian Weekday Morning Minyan. One Monday morning I received a phone call around 6:30 asking if I would come to their morning services beginning in a half hour. After I agreed and hung up the phone, I could not believe I accepted such an early in the morning committment. Arriving on time, I looked around the room. I counted exactly ten people present; I was the tenth! Since this was a Monday morning, a day in which we read Torah, had I not been present, this small Jewish community would not have been able to read Torah ( ... or they would have found another early morning riser). I felt proud, important, as if I helped others achieve their important goal. In appreciation, they honored me with an aliyah to the Torah. This story makes me think of our our congregation. At BJBE, the minhag, custom, at our Shabbat Morning Minyan is to recite kaddish with fewer than ten people. Why? So that those who are in mourning feel they have a community (however small) which supports them during this time of grief or for one observing a yahrtzeit. Over the past few years, the BJBE Shabbat Morning Minyan has turned out an attendance of ten or more, so we haven't had to address the issue as of late. There is another time in our lives when we recite kaddish and therefore might be in need of a minyan. During the period of shiva, the seven days the family in mourning is at home following a funeral. On occasion, I have led services at the home of those mourners where there were fewer than ten Jewish people present. I recited kaddish with the family because that's our minhag at BJBE on Shabbat, and reciting kaddish felt right as a comfort to these families. There's a part of me however that feels uncomfortable with fewer than ten for a minyan. We've lost that sense of obligation to our community and congregation, to be called at an instant's notice (if not at 6:30 in the morning) to help count for a minyan. Perhaps you have your own minyan story when you were called upon to be the tenth. I've heard a few of your stories, and all have had meaning. Should we at BJBE call upon a corps of volunteers who are willing to count as the tenth? Would you be willing to be among those called to count as the tenth? Would you want ten if the minyan were in your home? I look forward to your responses. L'shalom, Amy L. Memis T' filot. .. Worship Friday, December 3 8:00 pm Shabbat Worship First Chanukah Cand1e ... RABBI REACTS ... About a month ago at services, I shared my thoughts about the

need for ten ( 10) people--and no fewer, to make up a minyan.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ... Dear Congregants: I want to share with you the topic of Rabbi Mark Shapiro and

Rabbi Emeritus. Will he or won't he? After Rabbi Shapiro announced his intended retirement, the question everyone asked was, "Is Rabbi Shapiro going to be Rabbi Emeritus?"

Rabbi Shapiro answered the question in his Highholy Day sermon and we all heard him say, "Yes". Now the question is, "what does that mean to be Rabbi Emeritus?"

There is a wonderful publication put out by the UAHC and the CCAR (Union of American Hebrew Congregations and Central Conference of American Rabbis) called, "Guidelines for Rabbinical-Congregational Relationships". Using this as our personnel committee reference, the description of Rabbi Emeritus was presented to Rabbi Shapiro and then to the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees approved the description at the October board meeting. The description is as follows:

Rabbi Emeritus shall have an honorary lifetime family membership at BJBE. Rabbi Emeritus shall help establish his successor as Senior Rabbi. Rabbi Emeritus may participate in conducting the synagogue service, give a sermon, or teach when invited to do so by the Senior Rabbi of the congregation and in accepting such an invitation to participate, he shall follow the prevailing rituals and forms of worship. Rabbi Emeritus may officiate at life-cycle functions for members of the congregation and their families only upon the invitation or request of the Senior Rabbi of the congregation. Rabbi Emeritus shall keep the Senior Rabbi informed of significant events in the lives of the congregation about which he has knowledge.

Though not a part of the description, Rabbi Shapiro has asked for office space in the building and yes, we will find space for him to have an office.

It is an exciting and exhilarating experience to have a new Senior Rabbi after 35 years and it is a comfort and a blessing to have Rabbi Mark Shapiro as Rabbi Emeritus.

TORAH PORTIONS (PARASHOT) FOR DECEMBER ... The parashot that we read over the coming month complete the

Book of Bereshit (Genesis). We began our reading 8 weeks ago with the Creation of the earth and humankind and have continued thru the lives of the Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the Matriarchs: Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, and Rachel. As the first book of the Chumash concludes, Joseph dies at the age of .110 and is buried in Egypt. If you had an opportunity to look at last month's website ... great!

Here is another one to add to the list. Go to www.uahc.org. This is the site for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and is chockful of great information. Under the section titled, "Learning", check out the subsections, "Tora/ Hayim" and "Shabbat Table Talk". You will find wonderful essays regarding the weekly Parasha as well as have access to commentaries from previous years. Have fun!!

And again, the blessing prior to studying Torah ... "Baruch Atah Adonai, Elohenu Melech Ha Olam, asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu la asok b'divrei Torah". We praise You, Eternal G-d, Sovereign of the Universe: You hallow us with the gift of Torah and command us to immerse ourselves in its words".

Parashat Vayechi Genesis 47:28-50:26 Before he dies, Jacob blesses Joseph's sons (his grandsons) Ephraim and Manassah bestowing the blessing of the first born on the head of Ephraim who was actually 1he younger of the two. Where else in the Book of Genesis have we seen a blessing given to the younger child? What was Jacob's explanation for this?

BOARD MEETING RESUME OCTOBER 20, 1999 ... The board voted to confer the title of Rabbi Emeritus on Rabbi

Mark Shapiro beginning July I, 2000. They also authorized the personnel committee to enter into discussion with Shari Bauer to continue as Executive Director of BJBE. Authorization was given to extend the contract of Rabbi Amy Memis for 2 years beginning July I, 2000, with the provision that the contract can be terminated any time during the second year, provided that a minimum of 6 months notice be given prior to the date of termination.

The board approved the temple joining the Amazon Association Group, which gives rebates for orders from temple members. Further information will be published in the bulletin.

There are 3 applicants being interviewed for the position of Congregational Nurse. The Rabbinical Search Committee has had a personal interview with one prospective Rabbi as of this date, and there will be 2 more applicants to follow.

The week-end of events honoring Rabbi Shapiro will be held April 7-8. Further information forthcoming.

SISTERHOOD NEWS ... For me, one of the most staggering aspects of parenthood is the

fact that every word I say and every move I make are subject to the intense scrutiny of three impressionable, little people. Although I strive to explain life's lessons to my children, the old adage that actions speak louder than words certainly rings true. While I tell my kids, for example, to stand up for what they believe in, to always be kind, and to make time for people and things that really matter, it makes much more of an impression on them to see me actually participating in activities that embody these lofty goals . That's where Sisterhood comes into the picture: By participati ng in Sisterhood activities, I am able to show my children the importance of volunteering, ofreaching out to others.

While you may not have small children watching your every move, your actions make a statement to a variety of people around you, including your spouse/partner, your co-workers, your parents, your friends, and everyone else you come into contact with. If you've ever talked about the importance of doing things that really matter, why not let your actions speak louder than your words by joining Sisterhood for an upcoming program?

ARZA/WORLD UNION, NORTH AMERICA ...

Israel Supreme Court Rules Government Must Support Liberal Religious Education. Asserting that religious pluralism is a fundamental element of Jewish democratic state, the Israel Supreme Court has ruled that the Religious Affairs Ministry must support religious studies taught at liberal religious institutions. Specifically, the court ruled that the government must fund religious studies of the Masorati (Conservative) movement going back to 1997. Including reimbursement for court costs, the Masorati movement will receive approximately 700,000 shekels ($175,000).

This has a direct impact on funding for religious studies sponsored by the Israel Reform movement which also had been denied support by the government.

FROM THE EDUCATOR'S PERSPECTIVE ... On Oct. 28, 1999, the temple, the Early Childhood Center, and I

lost a friend. Bert Sinker, a long-time congregant, died on that day. Bert was one of our first temple presidents. I did not know him

then. I met Bert about 7 years ago when I attempted to convince him that he and his very young son needed to be coming to the Early Childhood Center. Much to my delight, he agreed with me and our friendsh ip began. Bert and his family participated in all of our programs. My teachers and I loved to watch Bert parent his young son. He was stern when he needed to be, but his love was always so apparent. One of my strongest memories is the way he treated me and my staff. His respect and admiration for our profession truly elevated us. Bert was a strong advocate of the Early Childhood Center, and when we needed his advocacy, he was always there for us .

Bert had a great love for our temple. In the past several years, he was a regular at the temple board meetings, as past presidents are invited to sit on the board. On more than a few occasions, he would call me up to chat about the temple. He'd say, "Kiddo, I noticed such and such being done in such and such a way. What do you think"? He'd listen to me and I'd listen to him, we'd solve the problems of the world, and I felt honored that a man so devoted to the temple and it's well-being would be interested in my opinion.

Last spring, when I was formally offered the job of Educator by the temple board, my friend Bert Sinker told me he would be making the motion to put my name before the board. He did just that, and that meeting was the last he would attend.

Shalom chaver - good-bye my friend. Sandy Robbins Director of Education

KEEP THIS UNDER YOUR KIPPAH ... By now the word is out: Rabbi Shapiro is retiring and there is

going to be a celebration honoring him for all that he's done for all of us. The dates have been published and so have the places. No secrets, right? Not quite, for there are some details I'd like to let you know about if you promise not to tell the rabbi!

The Friday evening service will include participation by guests as well as our rabbis. Everyone is certainly welcome to attend, including children whose parents believe are old enough to do so. (Note: The Religious Schools have their own celebratory plans in the works, which will include even the youngest in our schools)! Of course the Oneg Shabbat will be incredible, even for BJBE! We will be asking for help from our premiere dessert makers, so start thinking of your grandest recipes.

Saturday evening's dinner and festivities are being planned for adult participation. There will be a charge for this with the amount yet to be determined. It is the goal of the Steering Committee to keep the price down so as to make the event financially doable. The Rosemont Convention Center can accommodate a cast of thousands!

Invitations for the dinner will be sent to all congregants sometime after the fust of January at which time you can make your reservations. However, the Steering Committee would be happy to send invitations to your adult children who, although they no longer live at home, might want to be a part of this gala evening as well as to former BJBE people now living out of town. Please contact me with these addresses by e-mail ([email protected]) or else leave a message at the temple office.

Now that I've shared some secrets, I hope that you are as excited about the Celebratory Weekend as is the Steering Committee. Just remember: Don't tell Rabbi Shapiro!

A SLICE OF THE PIE ...

B'shalom, Sandee Holleb Steering Committee Chairman

We all know that a pie can be served to any number of people-depending on the size of the slices. Well...the Tommy Schwarzkopf Library, here in the temple, would appreciate a tiny slice of the pie you, individually, call "good works".

Even in this electronic age, what with TV, computers, and heaven knows what else, nothing will ever compare to the wonder and magic that a young mind feels when a person learns to read. What a fantastic vista opens up when printed words suddenly spring from the pages and ignite our imagination.

Where is all this leading, you ask? Well, "lemmie tell ya"! Every month I receive notices of all the new and wonderful books coming out, and I wish we could buy them all for the library for your children. We can do it...with your help. How? Have your child select a birthday book, which he or she can then donate to the library. Or,a gift to the library fund will enable us to go out and buy some of these new books. Or, call and ask if you can help Uust leave a message at the temple--believe me, you'll hear from me)!

If you give the library just a tiny piece of your pie, we can feed a hundred eager minds with it. And besides, you won't even miss those few extra calories.

FAMILY KALLAH HIGHLIGHTS ... A group of I 7 families and staff gathered together at OSRUI in

Oconomowoc, Wisc., on Oct. 22-24 for a wonderful weekend of prayer, learning Jewish things, eating, and fun , fun, fun!!! We started out with a lovely Shabbat Dinner, followed by services and a family program. Please look for the great family trees that we all made. They will be hung around the temple.

Our Saturday morning Tephilot was most outstanding. Four different family members were able to read from the Torah--three of them translating as they read, and one of them chanting in the most beautiful voice. It was truly a Shehecheyanu moment!

Although it was rather brisk outside, we climbed the tower for 3 hours, and some of us actually got to the top .

Of course, what would Family Kallah be without some special projects to make and take home. We painted vases for Shabbat, made beautiful tile drip plates for our candles, and painted tile squares.

A very special moment was shared by about 60 people sitting on the floor of the Bayit. The lights were turned low, and as Rhonda Wehner and Julie Webb were leading us in Havdalah, Jacob TaitelWebb was passing around the spice box for everyone to smell. If I close my eyes, I can still see him gently hand it to one person sitting on the floor, and then very carefully take it back and pass it to the next person.

The Jewish Pictionary game was fun, as was the "Fish Bowl" adult program, or as we refer to it, "stump Rabbi Memis".

Sunday was breakfast, tephilot and a chance to write some reflective family prayers which Rabbi Memis incorporated into the service. Nancy Carol came up to camp and took some beautiful family portraits in an outdoor setting. This was followed by lunch and more singing and dancing. All family members are encouraged to bring their musical instruments. We had some real jamming going on!!!

I can't believe it's over. We're actually starting to plan Family Kallah 2000. Keep your eyes open for the date. Look for pictures on the bulletin board. Once again, I have to say, "This Is Real/yAs Good as it Gets!!!"

QUEST FOR KOLIN ... Thanks to everyone who attended and helped out with our

dinner/raffle on Nov. 13. Thanks to Barry Brownstone and Father and Son Pizza who helped out with the delicious dinner; thanks to our wonderful BJBE Sisterhood who provided the yummy desserts, and thanks to those of you who donated raffle items.

We are happy to announce that the BJBE website (www.uahcweb.org/il/ilOIO) now provides a link to Amazon.com. Look for the link in the bookstore where you will find a wonderful selection of Jewish books certain to enhance your library. For every book you buy directly off the BJBE site, the Quest for Kolin will get 15% of the sale of that book. If you go to Amazon.com thru the BJBE site and buy anything else (including music, video's, dvd's, electronics, and gifts), we will still get 5% of the sale!

It's easy, it's free to you, and every purchase you make will help us to achieve the unbelievable goal of raising funds to travel to Kolin twice in two years!

Commissioner -------Cook County District 14 118 North Clark Street Room567 . Chicago, Illinois 60602

Dear Commissioner

. October , 1999

As a congregant ·of B 'nai Joshua Beth Elohim in Glenview and a concerned citizen, I am writing to urge you to' support the Gilead Campaign for the Uninsured of United Power for Action and Justice, and t~ include preliminary funding for this effort in your current budget deliberations. ·

. As yo-µ are aware, there ~e over 1 million uninsured_ in the Chicago area, affecting all races and all income.levels. This probleµi is beyorid the scope of County government to solve . alone, and is 'overVihelming hospital emergency rooms with sick patients unable to pay 'for needed services. For the uninsured health care is often infrequent and demeaning, too late, and the cause of financial ruin or worse.

The first phase of United Power's Gilead Campaign would create a coherent County-wide. referral program to sign up the uninsured eligible for existing health programs, as well as create initial funding for provision of cost-effective primary care using private service providers close to home. · ·

I urge you to provide illitiai funding of the Gilead Campaign in next year's budget at the level of $20 million, and for the County to take the lead in working with United Power and the private healthcare sector~ develophig broader solution,S.

Sincerely Yours,

cc: Cook County Board President John Stroger (same address as above)

The candles are the heart of the Chanuka celebration. TheChanukiyya has nine candle holders - eight for the eight days of Chanuka, and one for the shamash or helper candle. This candle is used to light all the other candles. The shamash stands taller than the other candles or is off to the side, so that you can identify its correct place.

We put the candles in each evening beginning on the right of the Chanukiyya (the way we read Hebrew,) but light them in the opposite direction (newest candle first.) Each night we add a candle - on the first night there is one candle, on the far right plus the shamash; on the second night · two candles on the right plus the shamash, etc.

Light the sharriash. Hold it, say the blessings and then light the candles with the shamash.

2. E.ating G The traditional •mirade" of Ctianuka is that

when the Maccabees, the victorious Jewish guerilla army, rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem, they orily found enough oil to light the Ner Tamid, or Eternal Light, for one day. However, the oil lasted for eight days, by which time they located pure oil, In commemoration of this event, we eat foods cooked in oil on Chanuka. This may be especially appreciated today, when many people limit the use of oil. Live it up, for one week! assimilation. At the time of the Maccabees, many Jews accepted the Greek culture happily. They found it sophisticated and attractive, . and did not

. wantto be different. Mattathias, Judah Maccabee's father, found the sight of a Jew· offering up a pig in pagan sacrifice so abhorrent that he killed the man. This act began the Maccabee revolt. Thus, the Chanuka story directly deals With differences in Jewish observance and levels of assimilation into majority culture.

Chanuka's proximity to Christmas creates a powerful dynamic .: the ·oecember Dilemma.· The all-pervasive glitter and commercial appeal of Christmas has led to confusion iri some Jewish homes and the adoption of some Christian customs in others. This situation is more complicated in families with inter-faith marriages, as one. partner may observe Christmas and one does not.

yearn ·to be like everyone else, to share their holidays and customs. However, by being members of this. congregation, you are assert\ng your Jewish identity. Enriching that' identity' and

· your joy in Jewish holiday observance .throughout the year will lessen envy at Christmas. .

Arid, to state the issue · in positive terms, Chanuka is . the story of standing up for what you

. believe in. It reminds us not to remain silent in the face of oppression, and not to surrender our rights and identities. Amen!
