Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

A Musical Giant - Part 1 Shabbat Shira, the Sabbath of Song, which occurs this year on February 11, ushers in a period in our Jewish calendar known as Jewish Music Season. In honor thereof, I wish to devote this and next months’ articles to two Jewish giants of music the world recently lost just days apart: Leonard Cohen and Rabbi Ben Zion Shenker. Although from different ends of the artistic and musical spectrum, their impact upon the world of music nevertheless is far reaching. Their legacy will continue to live on into the future. Leonard Cohen, the great Montreal-born poet, performer and composer, passed away on November 7, 2016 at the age of 82. Rabbi Ben Zion Shenker, the famous composer of some 800 Modzitz Chassidic melodies, passed away on November 20, 2016 at the age of 91. Since I cannot adequately do justice to both of these musical luminaries in one article, I will devote this column to Leonard Cohen, and next month’s article will be dedicated to Ben Zion Shenker. Leonard Cohen descended from a deeply Jewish lineage, including several rabbis. His family were founders of the Montreal Jewish Community, and he studied Torah and Talmud with his grandfather. Although his myriad of artistic creations which span a lifetime of 60 years of creativity, are not specifically Jewish, they were deeply influ-enced by his Judaism. One of his early poetic creations, entitled The Spice-Box of Earth, is a reference to the spices used for Havdalah at the conclusion of Shabbat. His song ‘The Future’ references Kabbalah in the words,

“There is a crack, a crack in everything

That’s how the light gets in.”

Concerning his song The Partisan, Cohen states, “…I developed the curious notion that the Nazis were overthrown by music.” In the song, he states,

“…Through the graves the wind is blowing

Freedom soon will come. Then we’ll come from the shadow.”

Biblical themes are pervasive in songs like The Story of Isaac and Whither Thou Goest from the Book of Ruth. His song Who By Fire is a reference from the Unetaneh Tokef prayer from the High Holidays Musaf service. His final work, Y ou Want It Darker, recently released on his 82nd birthday right before his demise, is perhaps a premonition of what lay ahead. It includes Hebrew lyrics from the Kaddish, and backup vocals of the Hineni prayer (meaning “Here I am”) also from the High Holidays, sung by the Cantor and choir from Cohen’s Montreal syna-gogue Shaar Hashomayim. Perhaps Cohen’s most famous song is Hallelujah. To date there are at least 300 recorded versions of the song, which likely will increase even as I write this tribute. The song has lately been heard in synagogues and churches around the world. It has been adapted to Psalm 150, the last of the Psalms, and recently entered the Ameri-can Billboard Top 100 for the first time. Its haunting melody rises climactically in a crescendo before fading into its gentle and familiar Hallelujah chorus. Its Biblically inspired lyrics state,

“Now, I’ve heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord.

…I did my best, it wasn’t much …I’ll stand before the lord of song

With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah. Hallelujah

Hallelujah…”

As Cohen wrote in these words, he “did (his) best,” and is now “stand(ing) before the lord of song.” His words, music and persona will continue to inspire for generations.

We hope you will all join us for two special Shabbat services. On Shabbat February 11th - Shabbat Shira – The Sabbath of Song, when we will have an inspirational musical presentation in words and song. On Shabbat February 18th Jan and I will sponsor a special Kiddush in honor of our daughter Jaclyn’s forthcoming marriage to Alex Strauss. Come meet our family and rejoice with the chatan and kallah, the bride and groom at the service followed by the Kiddush Luncheon. Hazzan Ivor Lichterman

President’s Message…………………………….……….

Graves of Our Fathers, and Ourselves.

I have been thinking about cemeteries lately. That may sound morbid, but it is important. Just this past year, as part of our 150th anniversary celebration opening weekend, many of us visited Beth Shalom and Eagle Point, learning much about the history of the Toledo Jewish Community. If you have had the unhappy experience of visiting a dilapi-dated cemetery, you must realize how fortunate this community is to have these serene and sacred places still being maintained. However, time is not on our side. Many congregations and communities, facing growing costs and shrinking resources, will need to decide how much of their dwindling assets will be used for their cemeteries. What will Beth Shalom look like when our congregation is 300 years old? Who will be responsible? We face the same challenges as many Jewish communities. How wonderful it is to be part of the fantas-tic Toledo area Jewish community which has come together to make the survival of these cemeteries a community priority, in perpetuity. Some years ago, when visiting New York City, my wife Ann researched some sites for us to visit. Among them were the oldest Jewish cemetery, the “First Shearith Israel Graveyard”, on St. James Place in lower Manhattan. It was actually the second burial site, the older one no longer being in existence, and is one of three the congregation maintains. It is only a fraction of the original size, and is certainly off the usual tourist route. It was locked, but you could still peek in. It certainly looks its age, and is not in perfect condition. But I find it amazing that it is still there, which is no doubt a result of Shearith Israel still being in existence. Another interesting stop was in Pisa, Italy while on a bus tour. When we pulled into Pisa, passing an

area with an impressive ancient wall, our guide was surprised that the Jewish cemetery door was open. After visiting the cathedral and taking photos of its leaning free-standing bell tower, we decided to use our free time to visit the cemetery rather than the gift shop. There was a young lady there, who turned out to be a graduate stu-dent doing research, which is why the gate was open. This was a fascinating place. It seems that not many Jews live in this part of Italy, but the cemetery is still active, with some newer graves scatted among the very old. It dates from the year 859, and much of it looked its age and needed some attention. I wondered who was re-sponsible for its upkeep. It was time to go to the bus and, when we turned around, the gate was closed! There was no way we would be able to get over the huge wall. Much to our relief, the student was still there and let us out.

Ann and I grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and when we go back we always make the grand tour involving three different Jewish cemeteries to visit family and friends. Once we had a ques-tion and talked to the elderly gentleman in the small office. By the time we left, I was the official contact person for my paternal grand-parents, a great-aunt and great-uncle, and an uncle. It looked like they had many graves for which there was no record of who to con-tact if there is a problem. Since then, I get occasional requests for help. The latest problem was the dying ash trees which had to be removed. It seems the perpetual care funds cannot cover all that needs to be done.

The last cemetery I visited was, no surprise, Beth Shalom. As the years go by, I know more and more people there. It is comforting to be able to go there or to Eagle Point. Whether or not you expect to be there some day, and whether or not you have family or friends there already, it is an important part of our Jewish Community. We are extremely fortunate to be a part of a community that has come together to maintain and preserve our graves and cemeteries, honoring the past, and preparing for the future.

IMPORTANT

Changes to the Jewish Cemeteries in Toledo Special Congregational Meeting to Amend our Constitution

Dear fellow members of Congregation B’nai Israel, The long-planned change in ownership and operation of the Cemetery is nearing completion after years of work by representatives of the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo, the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Senior Services Supporting Organization and representatives of our congregation, Etz Chayim, and the Toledo Hebrew Cemetery Association. For those who are not familiar with this effort, it is meant to transfer the assets of Beth Shalom and Eagle Point Cemeter-ies to the Federation, which will then own and run the cemeteries through a new Federation agency, The Toledo Jewish Communi-ty Cemetery Association. Projecting into the future, it is clear that the three historical owners, Congregation B’nai Israel, Congregation Etz Chayim, and the Toledo Hebrew Cemetery Association would not have the financial resources to maintain the two Jewish community cemeteries forever. The Federation and Foundation, through the generosity of the Jewish Senior Services Supporting Organization, the David Stone Community Needs Fund and other resources, combined with the current congregational perpetual care funds will be able to insure the proper maintenance and operation of the cemeteries in perpetuity. For our congregants, there will be no obvious change. We will still have a burial plot as part of our membership. The rules governing burial and religious practice for our sections of the cemetery will continue to follow the rules and guidelines of the Conservative movement under the direction of our clergy. Any prepaid burial or other fees will be honored. Arrangements for a funeral will still be made with our own clergy and our synagogue office. The only significant change will be that we can all be assured that the cemeteries will be taken care of long into the future. For the Federation to assume this responsibility, “in perpetuity”, B’nai Israel, Etz Chayim and the Toledo Hebrew Cemetery Association will need to turn over the property, and the associated assets. In addition to the land, that includes prepaid burial and all perpetual care funds. It also requires that our congregation name the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation in our congregation’s “will”. Like individuals, organizations should have a will, and this will be necessary for the Cemetery reorganiza-tion to be finalized. That is the reason for calling a congregational meeting; to amend our constitution so that, in the event that our congregation should ever cease to exist without a successor congregation, any remaining assets would be directed to the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation. A Resolution, recently approved by your board, and the proposed amendment are enclosed. We realize this is not an easy topic to discuss. However, like writing a will, it is best to do it well ahead of time. Your board and members of our congregation who have worked for years on this project, believe this is the right thing to do. We will have a special meeting of the congregation for the sole purpose of voting on the proposed amendment. This

meeting will be on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at noon. We sincerely hope to see you there. If there are questions or concerns, please address these to Howard Rosenberg by e-mail: [email protected] Thank you. Howard Rosenberg, President Jeffery Bauer, Immediate Past-President Bennett Romanoff, Vice President for Administration Chuck Traugott, Synagogue Administrator and Past-President

RESOLUTION

Resolved, that, effective as of the special meeting to be held on February 5, 2017, a new Article XIV shall be added to the Constitution of Congregation B’nai Israel to provide for an ultimate beneficiary of the assets of Congregation B’nai Israel in the event Congregation B’nai Israel, or its successors and assigns, is no longer operating as a Jewish Congregation in the Greater Toledo area. Such a change shall be accomplished by adding a new Article XIV to the Constitution to read as follows:

Article XIV DISSOLUTION

“Notwithstanding anything in this Constitution to the contrary, in the event Congregation B’nai Israel, or its successors and assigns, ceases to operate pursuant to its purposes as articulated in the Amend-ed and Restated Articles of Incorporation of Congregation B’nai Israel dated June 20, 2002, as the same may be subsequently amended, the assets of Congregation B’nai Israel shall be transferred to a designated fund held by the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation, or its successor-in-interest, for the maintenance and care of the cemeteries established for the burial of Jewish families in the Greater Toledo area and operated and maintained by Toledo Jewish Community Cemetery Association, LLC.”

Adrienne Goldberg (Pictured with her nephew, Ethan Goldberg)

I am excited to be a "new" member to Congregation B'nai Israel. I have many fond memories from growing up at B'nai Israel. I celebrated my consecration, bat mitzvah, and confirmation in the Kenwood building.

Many congregants knew my great-grandfather, Rabbi Emeritus, Dr. Morton Goldberg z"l, but I just knew him as "Papa". I have always thought of Congregation B'nai Israel as home, and I am looking forward to continuing my membership and my memories now that I have begun my career as a middle school art educator in the Sylvania Schools.

LaPlante Family

Hello to the whole CBI community! We are the LaPlante family and have enjoyed getting to know many of you already over the past few months. For those we have yet to meet, let us introduce ourselves. Dan works for Jeep and is a lifelong Buckeyes and Redwings fan. Holley is a student getting ready for graduate school next fall, who loves to read and bake. Eva has inherited her mother’s love of baking and does so every chance she gets, and Joseph likes to build models, be they cars,

airplanes, trains, or boats. There is a good chance on a day off you can find us exploring local parks as a family. A few of our favorites are Irwin Prairie and Kitty Todd State Nature Preserves, and Wildwood Metropark. Thank you to everyone who has already made us feel welcomed into the community, and we look for-ward to getting to know more of you in the future.

On December 3, 2016, B’nai Israel was alive with the sounds of amazing music, joy of a full house connect-

ing, and celebrating. It was indeed “An Enchanted Evening”. Our extended congregational family, members of the extended Jewish Community and community at large experienced a spectacular evening that is still being talked about…the afterglow continues. After dinner, the Toledo International Youth Orchestra entertained with our own Quinn Murphy. For the main event, Cantors Ivor Lichterman, Andrea Markowicz, and Jamie Gloth provided a musical program that was out-standing in every way. They performed Broadway, Opera, prayer, musical comedy, and each and every piece had par-ticular significance to the audience. Stephen Rothschild, narrator during Cantor Lichterman’s musical comedy presen-tation, added yet another level of hilarity. Joining our star studded performers were Rabbi Evan Rubin, of Congregation Etz Chayim and Cantor Josh Finkel, of Congregation Shomer Emunim. They delighted the audience with their lively participation. Cantor Pamela Schiffer of East Lansing also joined us for the evening . The ruach chorus and all of our performers joined together for a rousing finale. It was a wonderful way to continue the celebration of our congregation’s 150th anniversary.

Sisterhood Book Club 10:30am

On Sunday, November 13th, the Jewish Community sponsored a successful blood drive which was held at Congregation B'nai Israel. The American Red Cross collected 26 units of blood. These life savings units were going to be used for any emergency over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The need for blood is greater since donations are low at this time of year. A big thank you to all those individuals who kept their commitment, came to Intra-faith, & donated the gift of life. Kudos to our wonderful volunteers from all three Shuls. Congregation B'nai Israel Ellen Federman, Devorah Shulamit, Cathy Sperling, Andi Urie,

Bryon Wexler and Mark Wexler Etz Chayim Susan Muska Temple Shomer Emunin Alice Applebaum, Sue Hirsch, and Pam Jackson

We are grateful to the administrative staff & board members of Congregation B'nai Israel for being instrumental in having this annual drive at CBI. Special thanks goes to Karen McQuade who prepared the delicious lunch, and to Larry Johnson, building supervisor for all his much needed assistance setting up and taking down the all the tables and chairs and anything else that was needed. Thanks go to Alice Applebaum for being our expert photographer, volunteer and chairperson for Shomer and to Devorah Shulamit, coordinator of Intra-faith, chairperson of CBI and volunteer. Our thanks to Elsa Leveton for being the chairperson for Etz Chayim all these many years. The need for blood is constant. Emergencies do not take vacations. Please consider donating again in 56 days. For those of you who donated dou-ble reds, you can donate again in 112 days. We hope to see all of you at the 28th annual Interfaith Blood drive on June 24th and 25th, 2017.

With much thanks and gratitude, Shalom, Alice Applebaum and Devorah Shulamit
