Join us for a Shabbat of song and celebration November 8-9 as we install our Director of Congregational Learning Hazzan Tahl Ben-Yehuda We are honored to have Cantor Nancy Abramson the director of the HL Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music of The Jewish Theological Seminary and the President of the Cantorrsquos Assembly install Hazzan Ben-Yehuda during the 930 am Shabbat service Hazzan Ben-Yehuda received her Masters of Arts from the William Davidson School of Education and was invested as a cantor from the HL Miller Cantorial School Jewish Theological Seminary in May 2013 Hazzan Ben-Yehuda and her daughters Eliana and Sara Saidel joined our congregational family this past July The Hazzan brings to Congregation Beth Shalom her pas-sion for enhancing lives through lifelong Jewish learning love of Jewish music and love of Israel and Hebrew

The Hebrew alpha-bet is the essence of the art of world-renowned artist Mordechai Rosenstein By uniting his interest in Judaica and painting Rosenstein has given a con-temporary meaning to the art of Hebrew calligraphy

The terms ldquoTalking the talkrdquo and ldquoWalking the walkrdquo often refer to speaking about whatrsquos important versus doing what is important in life It is easy to fall into a trap when look-ing at others and say about them that they ldquotalk the talkrdquo but donrsquot ldquowalk the walkrdquo In other words that other person may speak or preach Jewish values or ethics but doesnrsquot actually live them out in practice As we leave the holidays behind it is important that the most valuable lessons of justice righteous-ness and spiritual devotion not be left behind with our high holiday prayer-books only to be picked up again next year

However there is something that is even more challenging ndash and that is ldquoTalking the walkrdquo and ldquoWalk-ing the talkrdquo I believe that the best way to have a relationship between talk and action is to comingle the two It is not enough to act justly in the world We need to explain to our loved ones our coworkers and our neighbors that we are giving to tzedakah and fighting injustice We are celebrating unusual holidays or customs We are supporting Israel because of our commitment to Jewish values and the Torah After leaving synagogue we must create action plans for how we are going to put into place the words from our prayerbook

In the blessing before the shema we say lrsquolmod ursquolilamed ndash ldquoto study and to teachrdquo lishmor vrsquolarsquoasot ndash ldquoTo guard and to dordquo ulrsquokayem et kol divrei Talmud Toratecha brsquoahava ndash ldquoIn order to enact all the words of learning your Torah with loverdquo Our devotion to God cannot be separated from our devotion to mankind and our speech cannot be separated from our action

Celebrating 100 Years of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism

In 1913 Solomon Schechter then President of the Jewish Theologi-cal Seminary assembled a group of 22 synagogues to work together to develop their common mission ldquothe development and perpetuation of Conservative Judaismrdquo Today 100 years later United Synagogue of Con-servative Judaism consists of nearly 700 synagogues around the world including Congregation Beth Shalom Beginning on October 11 the USCJ will celebrate its Centennial in Bal-timore with a Shabbaton and subse-quent meeting entitled ldquoConversation of the Centuryrdquo The ldquoConversationrdquo promises to focus on ldquothe challenges

and opportunities we face in re-imagining our kehillot ndash our sacred communities ndash for a changing Jewish worldrdquo Many of the brightest minds and innovative leaders of the Conser-vative movement will make presenta-tions at the convention Beth Shalom is fortunate that our congregant Mirra Klausner will attend the ldquoConversationrdquo as the 2013 recipient of the Arthur Brand Leadership Award The award es-tablished in 1999 by Arthurrsquos family recognizes new and emerging Beth Shalom leaders Arthur was not only a leader at Beth Shalom (President and Parnas) but in many other Jewish

organizations Mirra will officially receive the award from Betty Brand in honor of her late husband Arthur zrdquol at Shab-bat morning services on December 7th The award includes a trip to the USCJ Biennial Conven-tion Mazal tov to Mirra and we look forward to hearing from you about the ldquoConversation of the Centuryrdquo

At a recent forum on Jewish living a question came up How can we make Shabbat more enjoyable Of course Shabbat is a unique experience for each of us No one can tell you what you will feel and what will add to your life because itrsquos different for everyone But most of us can agree with the adage ldquothe more the merrierrdquo This absolutely goes for your Shabbat dinner table On Share Shabbat why not invite friends to join your Shabbat meal and

simply take it one step further by having your guests meet you first at CBS for services Yes this will cause us extra effort And yet the pleasure and joy we have hosting family and friends make the preparations so small in comparison Add to this the warmth and ruach Rabbi Glickman and Hazzan Ben-Yehuda bring to this Erev Shabbat Service and wersquore sure yoursquoll find Share Shab-bat a most enjoyable experience When God announced He was giving the Torah to the Jewish people He said ldquoIf you fulfill these commandments you will inherit heaven ndash the World to comerdquo The people asked

The Hebrew month of Heshvan begins on the fifth of October This month is also called Mar-Heshvan bitter Heshvan because within this month there are no holidays (Shabbat does not count as a holiday in case you were wondering) At Congregation Beth Shalom during Heshvan there will be cause for rejoicing as our Polsky Religious School students and family meet and learn from renowned artist Mordechai Rosenstein on Wednesday October 9 Mr Rosenstein is well-known for his Judaica featuring quotes from Tanach His Hebrew lettering is a wonder-ful way for our students to embrace

Hebrew language and they are sure to enjoy learning with him Please mark your calendars for the 15th of November when the sev-enth grade students of Congregation Beth Shalom will lead our congrega-tion in Friday night services and the families of the seventh grade students will host the communityrsquos celebration of their children This service will be led by both students of our Polsky Religious School as well as students who attend the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy This will be the first in a se-ries of monthly services that will be led by each of the different classes I hope that whether or not you have children

PreK Class is Awesome Here we are in October and the fall holidays have already hap-pened Unbelievable RFECEC has the most amazing new PreK program Some highlights arebull The children are given three sight words a week to learn and the words are added to the sight word ldquobubble gum machinerdquo as the kids master them It is starting to fill upbull On Mondays the students make their own lunches This helps the children develop their fine motor skills as well as self-help skills They eat healthier by trying new foods and love preparing the foodbull We are using Everyday Math-ematics for our Math Curriculum It was developed by the University of Chicago School of Mathematics Project Children develop a broad

background by learning concepts and skills in all six strands number and numeration operations and computa-tion data and chance geometry and patterns functions and algebra Every-day Mathematics is a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations and playful activities There is also a home component to the program so parents become a part of the learning processbull Handwriting Without Tears is our writing programbull Get Set for School is our Lit-eracy curriculum bull The Lake Shore Science Program is our science programWe are very excited about our new curriculums and the great challenge we are presenting to our amazing PreK kids

Filling 2 8 oz packages of cream cheese2 eggs⅔ cup of sugar frac12 tsp of vanilla Beat the cream cheese until it is very smooth and add the other

ingredients Pour the mixture over the crust Bake at 350deg for 25 minutes and set to cool in pan

Topping (preheat oven at 450deg)16 oz carton of sour cream4 Tbsp sugarfrac12 tsp vanilla Mix the ingredients together Place mixture on top of the cheese

cake and bake in oven for 7-10 minutes at 450deg After cooling remove the cheese cake and place in refrigerator Remove frac12 hour before eating This cheesecake should sit at least two days before using

We recently returned from Las Vegas where we celebrated the Bat Mitzvah of our second oldest grand-daughter Peter and I are grateful that

both our son and daughter have Jewish spouses and Jewish homes All five of our grandchildren are being brought up as Conservative Jews We have celebrated two Brsquonei Mitzvah and will be celebrating a Bar Mitzvah in February We ldquokvellrdquo each time we see one of our grandchildren on the bimah What did we do right Maybe we are just lucky I know that our Jewish home has always complimented and supported what our children and grandchildren learned at religious school and at the synagogue I firmly believe that Religious school synagogue and the home work together to form a foundation for Judaism

Congregation Beth Shalom and the JCC will co-sponsor an evening with Dr Shirley Graetz on Tuesday October 22 at 7 pm in the Jewish Community Center Social Hall The topic is her new book She Wrote in Clay The book is a historical fiction about the lives of women in the Ancient Near East
