Healing HavdalahCantor Ida Rae Cahana will lead an hour of music and quiet reflection followed by the simple and beautiful ceremony ending the Sabbath. Saturday, November 17, 4:30 - 6 PM Coffee, tea and cookies following

The Reform movement excised the traditional prayer for healing as being too old fashioned or superstitious - take your pick. It wasn’t until the early 1980s and the reintroduction of the “Mi Shebeirach” through a lyrical musical setting by Debbie Friedman that many of us heard of this prayer. Suffering herself from physical ailments throughout her performing career, Debbie helped a new generation rediscover the power of focusing inward and asking for strength and healing of the body and the spirit.

There are few examples of actual prayers recorded in the Torah. “Oh God, please heal her!” is one of the first spontaneous prayers we know of; the exclamation came from Moses when he discovered his sister, Miriam, had a life-threatening disease. Praying may not bring about a cure for you or your loved one, but taking the time to gather one’s thoughts in a supportive, spiritual environment may help to lift a tired soul.

Please join Cantor Cahana on November 17th for the return of this lovely service.

Future dates include February 16th and May 18th.

B’nei Mitzvah L’Dor V’Dor From Generation to Generation

Mallory Lauren SpringMallory will become Bat Mitzvah on November 3, 2012. She is the daughter of Harley and Robyn Spring, younger sister of Danielle and twin of Arianna. CBI member Evelyn Maizels is her grandmother. Mallory attends Lake Oswego Junior High School. Beginning in November 2011, Mallory has worked on a Mitzvah-a-Month, devoting her own time and resources to support a variety of area agencies, including Sunshine Pantry, BB

Camp, Community Warehouse and more. Through her work, Mallory has had a glimpse into the needs of the community and has learned how she can personally make a difference.

Arianna Michelle SpringArianna will become Bat Mitzvah on November 3, 2012, alongside her twin, Mallory. Arianna is the daughter of Robyn and Harley Spring, granddaughter of Beth Israel member Evelyn Maizels and the younger sister of Danielle. She is a student at Lake Oswego Junior High School. For the past year, Arianna has coordinated monthly Mitzvah projects to benefit a wide array of organizations in the community, including collecting toys for

the KGW Great Toy Drive; donating stuffed animals for NW Children’s Outreach; and holding a bake sale to raise money for the SMART program (Start Making a Reader Today). While some activities were fun, others were harder and more eye-opening, giving some insight into her own ability to help others.

Jacob Morris BrinJacob will become Bar Mitzvah on November 17, 2012. He is the son of Sagi and Jackie Brin, older brother of Ethan and grandson of Beth Israel member Phyllis Klein. Jacob attends Athey Creek Middle School in West Linn. For over 10 years, Jacob and his family have been involved with Wilsonville Community Sharing, a non-profit social service agency that operates a local food bank in Wilsonville and connects families in need with a variety of resources. Over the past summer, Jacob worked on a weekly basis at the Food Bank, sorting through hundreds of pounds of donated food, checking expiration dates and categorizing the donated items on a weekly basis throughout the summer. He assisted clients of Wilsonville Community Sharing and would often carry their groceries out to their cars for them.  Jacob has a strong desire to give back to his community, help those in need and bring an awareness to the problem of hunger that exists in his community.  Wilsonville Community Sharing is a satellite branch of the Oregon Food Bank: http://wilsonvillecommu-nitysharing.org.

Jordyn Ashley ZimmermanJordyn will become Bat Mitzvah during the 5:00 p.m. Havdalah service on November 24, 2012. She is the daughter of Craig and Debby Zimmerman and the older sister of Kari and Mason. Jordyn is a 7th grade student at Cedar Park Middle School in Beaverton. Jordyn has chosen to work with the Sunshine Pantry, a non-profit pantry offering food, clothing, household items, toys, toiletries and more to families in need. Over the past few

months, Jordyn has been soliciting local businesses to raise money and/or donations of food in order to allow the Sunshine Pantry to have a Thanksgiving dinner for the first time in several years: http://www.sunshinepantry.org.

daniel Isaac Whalen, 16 years old, who has earned the highest Boy Scout of America advancement award, the Eagle Scout Award. On September 23, 2012, Troop 728 of Beaverton, OR honored Daniel as he was awarded the Eagle Scout badge. Daniel is one of about 3-4% of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and complete a service project. Daniel’s Eagle Scout project was to re-route a section of

trail in the Collins Sanctuary, which is part of the Audubon Society of Portland. Rabbi Cahana provided the traveler’s prayer, which was read at the ceremony by Sarah Epstein, and Rabbi was able to join in the celebration of Daniel’s achievement. Daniel has attended Congregation Beth Israel since kindergarten and is a madrich for Leslie Berman. Daniel is the son of Stephanie Siegel and Jeff Whalen and attends Catlin Gabel School.

Crista and Jason Comella on the birth of their daughter, Anna Frances Comella, on September 30.

Steve and Stephanie Roitstein on the birth of their son, Ayden Morris Roitstein, on October 2. Ayden was named at his Brit Milah on October 9th.

Scott Robinowitz and Alyssa eguchi on their October 7th marriage, held in the Pollin Chapel and officiated by Cantor Cahana. Scott is the son of CBI members Chuck and Selene Robinowitz.

Jews Next dor is tremendously grateful to the many congregants who donated stuffed animals to the Ronald McDonald House Charities. In the end, JND collected over 300 stuffed animals that will now go on and be friends to children undergoing continuous medical treatment.

Mazel Tov and thank you. Over three tons of food was donated during the High Holy Day Food Drive and delivered to Lift Urban Portland for their food programs. Special thanks goes out to our religious school students and parents who delivered the food, with a special thank you to Jon, Amie, Sophia and Talia Wexler for weighing, tabulating and moving the 420 bags of food so generously donated by you.

Mazel tov to Rabbi Cahana. Just in time for Jewish Book Month, his Rosh Hashanah sermon, “Rabbi Sputnik and the Dreams of a Generation,” will be included in American Dreamers, a new book that willl be available from Weiden+Kennedy on November 16th. Beth Israel Celebrates Portland Jewish Book Month Sunday, November 4 9:00 AMShirley and Herbert Semler Board RoomThe CBI Book Club invites all temple members to read and enjoy the book chosen for Portland’s Jewish Book Month,

My Father’s Paradise, by Ariel Sabar. The book tells the story of the author’s father, the last bar mitzvah in Zakho, Kurdistan in 1950 and his odyssey to find acceptance first in Israel, and then in the United States. Sabar brings to life the ancient town of Zakho, discovering his family’s place in the sweeping saga of Middle-Eastern history. This powerful book is an improbable story of tolerance and hope set in what today is the very center of the world’s attention. On November 4, at 9 am, Mr. Sabar will speak to the book club via Skype, and will answer questions about the book as well as speak of the process he used to write such a wide ranging story. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited. We strongly encourage you to also go to oregonjcc.org/jbm to see the 10 other events during the month of November which pertain to this book.

Honoring Those Who ServedEach year on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day, we pay tribute to those buried at our cemetery who served our country in the wars by adorning their final resting spots with American flags. This simple indication of military service honors the sacrifices of our war veterans and enhances the natural beauty of our historic cemetery. For many years, cemetery workers have placed the nearly 200 flags on the ground plots and mausoleum spaces throughout the property. In recent years, Mitzvah Day volunteers have assisted with the task. This year, we introduced a new procedure aimed to ensure all graves are properly marked.

Over the long Veterans’ Day Weekend, a container of flags will be centrally located adjacent to Landau Chapel. Family members coming to visit may take a flag so they can personally place it on the grave in tribute to their loved ones. Should you have any questions about burial locations at the cemetery, please contact Jemi Kostiner Mansfield: 503-222-1069 or [email protected].

Israel and the American election: Jews, evangelicals, the Israel Lobby, and Money – A Post-election AnalysisSunday, November 18, 10:00 AMPollin ChapelSpeaker: Prof. Steven WindmuellerThe historic relationship between Israel and the United States remains strong, but the role that Israel plays in the American political process may be shifting. Have different parties found ways to split the Jewish community and Israel’s supporters? How does that play itself out in election results and in political discourse? Looking back on the 2012 election, we will analyze some of the moving pieces and discuss the future of Israel in American politics.

Dr. Windmueller is a specialist on political issues and American Jew-ish affairs and holds a doctorate in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. He served as the Dean of the Los Angeles Campus of the Hebrew Union College until 2010 and has appeared on various nationally syndicated media.

The dreyfus TrialTheodor Herzl and the Birth of ZionismSunday, december 2, 10:00 AMPollin ChapelSpeaker: Ron SilverWhen the French Command Staff learned that one of their officers was spying for the Germans in 1894, suspicion immediately focused on Captain Alfred Dreyfus.  There were two incriminating factors: his handwriting was nothing like the spy’s, and he was Jewish.  The Dreyfus court-martial was major news, and Theodor Herzl was one of the journalists covering this “Trial of the Century.”  As Herzl watched Dreyfus, an innocent man, stripped of his epaulets,  paraded in disgrace through the gates of the Ecole Militaire, and sent to Devil’s Island past a crowd shouting “Down with the Jews,” modern Zionism was born.  Join Ron Silver as he describes the twists and turns of Dreyfus’ struggle for redemption and the effect on Herzl.

developing CBI by Jenat Levison FeldmanDevelopment Director If you are reading this bulletin before November 4th, I hope you have made plans to join us for Ida Rae and Friends, CBI’s major fundraiser for this year. In addition to enjoying some of the most amazing talent Portland has to offer, this event will focus on raising money to Open Our Doors in order to both engage current members, welcome new

members and connect with the unaffiliated while also enabling us to expand our music program. We truly believe music is a strong medium in that it can be both inspirational and meaningful; for many it is often the doorway into Judaism. We are fortunate to have members who embrace and pass along this narrative, and we are equally blessed that more than 150 years ago, those before us saw the importance of establishing a Reform congregation that could enrich Jewish lives and create Jewish memories. Our commitment is to continue on this path and ensure we remain strong in the future.

At the time this article is being submitted, we can proudly report that we have had impressive success recruiting sponsors - both those that are loyal, longtime supporters of Congregation Beth Israel as well as new and emerging leaders. We have received wonderful feedback regarding CBI’s new spirit and focus and your engagement motivates us even more. In addition, it is exciting to see the enthusiasm embraced by the gracious members who have helped share this

message and secure our sponsors. Thank you to Stuart Chestler, Linda Georges, Michelle Gradow, Joanne Menashe, Harold Pollin, Loree Sakai, and Jeff Wolfstone. We hope you will (or did) join us for this fundraiser. Either way we certainly want you to know your contribution means a great deal and helps make the difference. It is always the right time to make a donation and show your support. Contact the CBI office by phone at 503-222-1069 or online at www.bethisrael-pdx.org. You can also contact me directly via email at [email protected] to help us Open Our Doors and/or get engaged with CBI. We are having a really good time developing CBI, and we would love for you to join us!

Without nourishment, there is no learningNovember 8th, 7:00 PM, Herbert & Shirley Semler Board RoomOur food drive was just the beginning. We had a terrific turn out for our first meeting to address how we can advocate for food justice and help to alleviate hunger locally, nationally and internationally. It is our hope that through a variety of hands-on and advocacy activities we can make a difference, while at thesame time building community among ourselves.

We hope you can join us in our quest. We will be meeting monthly on the second Thursday of each month. If you can’t join us at the meetings, we welcome you to share your ideas and participate in our activities. Just contact us at [email protected] or call the CBI office at 503 222-1069 to be added to our distribution group.

“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?Practice, practice, practice.” But in the case of Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, you get there this Decem-ber to sing with Pink Martini. Mazel tov to Cantor Cahana on her actual Carnegie Hall debut. We are very proud of our Cantor! While most of us can’t go to New York to catch the show, we do have our own “Carnegie Hall West” right here in Portland! Please plan to join us on Sunday, November 4th, for a fabulous musi-cal fundraising event, “Ida Rae & Friends,” featuring the talents of Pink Martini: Thomas Lauderdale, China Forbes, Storm Large and members of the Pink Martini band. Special guest performers include Wendy Westerwelle, Cantor Mark Saltzman, members of the NW Community Gospel Choir, and the Pacific Youth Choir, under the direction of Mia Hall Savage. This is the only opportunity you will have to see Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, China Forbes, and Storm Large perform together! 7:00 PM concert in the Temple$125 general admission$250 reserved seating Paid reservations by October 26th include a pre-function cocktail party - call the Temple for details: (503) 222-1069. We may not be going to Carnegie Hall - but Carnegie Hall is coming to us!
