“The prayers of the siddur are more than words – they are vesselstransporting us through centuries past, and they similarly connect us to futuregenerations…To pray with all my heart, I am asked to integrate these imagesand ideas so that they nurture my inner life. But the words are lifeless unlessI infuse them with personal meaning.”

Lev Shalem means “all my heart.” The opening quote from Editor, EdFeld’s introduction to the new Siddur Lev Shalem, explains a lot about whatmakes this siddur so special. Like the Mahzor Lev Shalem that we have beenusing for the past six High Holiday seasons, the Siddur Lev Shalem attempts to make thepowerful, ancient words of the prayers more personally meaningful through clear explanationsand meaningful related readings surrounding the traditional text. All the richness of our Shabbatand holiday prayers are still there and now we will also have these additions to help translatethe ancient words into ideas our hearts can relate to, thereby giving us the ability to pray with allour hearts.

Lev Shalem not only makes the prayer service more meaningful, but also moreaccessible. The siddur has much more transliteration than previous siddurim from theConservative Movement, enabling people of all backgrounds to more fully participate. Makingour services more welcoming, spiritual, accessible and educational is one of the core goals ofthe strategic plan passed by the Beth El Board a few years ago. That’s why the RitualCommittee has enthusiastically agreed that we should adopt the Lev Shalem as our new regularShabbat siddur starting at a Siddur Consecration Shabbat Friday night, January 20th andSaturday morning the 21st.

We know that getting used to a new siddur can take time and practice and we want tofacilitate this being a positive transition for all. So, just as we did when we adopted the MahzorLev Shalem, we will be offering a series of opportunities to learn about the siddur and how bestto use it to enhance your prayer experience. The first opportunities will be two two-sessionseminars on the siddur taught by Cantor Wendi in December and in January. The dates of theUnderstanding and Using the Siddur Lev Shalem Seminars will be December 13th and 20thand January 8th and 15th. We hope you will join us at one of these sessions before we startusing the new siddur. Of course, after we have adopted it for Shabbat services we will beginexploring its pages and passages for meaning about our prayers and about our faith in general. We are so excited to bring this tremendous new resource of the Conservative Movement to ourBeth El.

One last thought – I want to give a special thank you to the donors who have made theadoption of the Siddur Lev Shalem possible. We can all learn from your generosity anddedication to making our Shabbat services as meaningful and accessible as possible. I know Ihave learned so much from you. For others who would like to dedicate one or more of the newsiddurim – a beautiful way to remember a loved one or honor a special occasion - suchdedications can be made through the office for $36 per book.

I look forward to growing from the Lev Shalem along with all of you. I know that it will bringus closer to “praying with all our hearts” and that’s always the goal in our spiritual home.

Creating an Educational Experience that is Excellent, Relevant, Innovative, and Fun

What do YOU remember about Sunday School? The answer might be, “Not much,” or “Boring,” or,perhaps, some might surprise you with, “interesting and often fun.”

Beth El wants this and even more for its students. Our new and improved Religious School, renamed toreflect the changes, is Beit Sefer Shalom. How did we get to this new curriculum from Shalom Learning?

One of the questions we asked ourselves is, “What engages students?” Well, who else but students can trulyanswer that question? So we went to a 12 year veteran and California regional Teacher of the Year, HeatherWolpert-Gawron, who had researched this very question.

So here’s what the kids said:Interaction with their peers discussionUse of technologyConnecting the real world to their learningTeachers who love what they doTeachers who connect with their students

After looking at several curricula, the committee chose Shalom Learning because it addresses these same points. The curriculum is based on seven values, with four lessons based on each value. The values are timed to

match the Jewish calendar. For example, “Gevurah” (Heroism) is the topic of discussion around the time ofHanukkah. Each lesson has trigger videos, games, guiding questions and discussion activities all laid out. AND,there are web-based activities for students to do at home. Parents can check in to see what students are doing in class.

Our Religious School has become a true Jewish community school an innovative partnership betweenBeth El, Temple Israel, and KBH, a win-win situation for everyone. The larger classes create a synergy andexcitement that will help to improve attendance and participation in class discussion.

As with all new programs, we anticipate additional teacher training along with tweaking whatever isn’tworking as well as expected. First years are always difficult, especially for the teachers, who are learning a wholenew pedagogic program. We welcome your concerns or suggestions! The more YOU care, the more our kids willsucceed in learning what it means to Be Jewish and Do Jewish.

“I like minyan and saying the Ashrei.” Rachel

In response to her Hebrew tutoringsession, Stella said “This was fun!”

Olivia and Julia: “We love our Hebrewsessions with Ms. Brenda (Kozak) and

Ms. Rita (Yashaev).”

Caleb’s favorite activity is

“Watching the videos of the

Maccabeats.”

Beth El to House the Homeless (N.E.S.T.)January 18th - 25th

It is to share your bread with the hungry, and to take the wretched poor into your home; When you see the naked,to clothe them, and not to ignore your own kin. Then shall your light burst through like the dawn and yourhealing spring up quickly…

-Isaiah 58:7-11

As we see in Isaiah’s famous explanation, when we open our house to those without shelter, not only are wehelping them but we are also allowing our own light to shine forth. The NEST program is Beth El’s way ofopening our home to the poor and sharing our bread with the hungry. It has long been our premier social actionproject the program that allows our “light to burst through like the dawn.”

This year, Congregation Beth El will again open its doors to the homeless of our community for a weekbeginning Wednesday, January 18th. For the twenty-first year, Beth El will join churches and area synagoguesin hosting and feeding the homeless throughout the winter months as part of the efforts of NEST (NorfolkEmergency Shelter Team).

In the past, Beth El has depended on the commitment of its members for this important mitzvah. Volunteersare needed again to register guests, prepare and serve meals and to be available during the night and earlymorning hours to monitor the program. Contributions are greatly needed to fund this program. Those whocan are encouraged to send a check to Beth El with the notation that is for the homeless program.

If you would like to donate to this program or volunteer, please see the form below.

On Sunday, November 6th, 2016 at noon, about one hundred students, parents and clergy stood at twoopen graves at Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk to bury over one thousand sacred books, tallisim, tefillot andJewish papers that all have Hashem’s name on them. This ceremony, called the Genizah Ceremony, entailed theburying of sacred Jewish items. We bury them and do not destroy them.

The ceremony was conducted by Rabbi Jeffrey Arnowitz, Rabbi Michael Panitz, and Cantor Wendi Fried.Rabbis Arnowitz and Panitz gave two beautiful readings regarding the burial of these sacred books and CantorWendi read with all of us the Rabbanan Kaddish. Our Education Director, Sharon Wasserberg, worked with allthe students in getting items donated.

These items were all donated by members of Congregation Beth El, Temple Israel, Temple Emanuel andBeth Chaverem. This was a community burial and was in part a study lesson for the Religious School children. This event was chaired by Norman Soroko and special thanks to Altmeyer Funeral Home in Virginia Beach fordonating their time, staff, vehicles and underwriting the costs incurred for opening and closing the two gravesat Holly Lawn Cemetery. Page 6SISTERHOOD HAPPENINGS

Sisterhood members from Beth El and Temple Israel celebrated Sukkot in the sukkah. After a lunch ofsubs and sweets we moved to the Beth El library for a look at the stereotypical Hollywood view of theJewish mother in the short film Woody Allen and Mia Farrah movie Oedipus Wreks. Rabbi Panitz ofTemple Israel regaled the ladies with a history of how the stereotype evolved out of need throughouthistory.

The next joint Sisterhood event will be for Tu B’Shevat in February, hosted by Temple Israel. Watchfor more in the weeks to come. On November 13th Sisterhood prepared a beautiful and decidedly delicious reception in honor of theInstallation of our Cantor Wendi. Our thanks go out to Carol Smith, Helene Grablowsky and theirkitchen mavens for the lovely reception. Beth El kitchen mavens are prepared to assist you in your celebrations and life events. Page 10“Keep your eye upon the doughnut and not upon the hole”

It is December and a natural time to reflect and, yes, to plan ahead for the comingsecular year. Take a moment to consider the following questions: Which aspects of beingJewish are the most meaningful to you personally? Describe your favorite memories ofdoing Jewish. Who, or what, has made the greatest impact on how you do Jewish? Whenand where do you feel the most connected to Judaism? Do any of your responses make youwonder why?

Some of us experienced an enriched Jewish path to adulthood: a Jewish pre-schoolfollowed by a Jewish day school with summers at Ramah and then on to Nativ or another ‘gap-year’ programin Israel followed by university with a large Jewish student population. Others of us had fewer options. Someof us have large, extended families who get together for all the holidays (Jewish and secular) and others do nothave those advantages. Some of us went to shul regularly and maybe observed kashrut. Others saw the insideof the sanctuary twice a year and vaguely recall their grandmother not allowing cheese burgers. Most of us fall,or fell, somewhere along the continuum of Jewish background. Question: does the route matter so long as wearrive at our destination?

These questions, examples, and reflections take on particular importance at this moment in time becausewe made a MAJOR change in approach to Jewish education at the start of the current school year. What wasbefore? To be perfectly honest, it was an elegant presentation of the grand buffet of all that is Judaism andexposing the students to a little bit here and a little bit there in the hope of fanning their personal flame ofwanting to know. What is now? Now we have a very coordinated and serious exploration of seven particularJewish middot or values presented over the course of a twenty-eight session school year with a different spinor aspect of said value being presented at each grade level. Because this column has real space limitations, Iurge you to explore this exciting curriculum directly from the source and allow plenty of time to absorb all itoffers. The Shalom Learning website is www.shalomlearning.org.

So why did I choose this title for my December article? All too often we think the important stuff to passalong to the next generation of Jews is the material that will help them win Jeopardy. While there is a need toteach and learn the facts, those same facts are also easily found via a Google search. What we cannot teach isthe feeling in our “kishkies” when we say we are Jewish or land in Israel for the first time or walk into the houseon a Friday afternoon and the scent of warm challah and Shabbat dinner wafts in the air. Judaism affects allfive of our senses. Memories of doing Jewish fill our hearts and souls. I believe we are obligated to leave theworld a better place because we were here. I believe we are partners with HaShem in the ongoing creation ofour world. Check out the seven values we help our students understand because, in the end, understanding thevalues of Judaism and figuring out how to live those values is what we need.

Happy Secular New Year!Sharon
