A DREAM COME TRUE As you read this article, 16 high school students and 3 adults from our congregation are feverishly finalizing preparations, if not already well on their way, for Congregation B’nai Israel’s historic Confirmation trip to Israel from June 6 – 16. As tour leader, I am thrilled to join with chaperones Matt Kripke and Alison Sherman who will assist me in taking our group of sixteen excited students to Israel. This is the culmination of their high school Jewish educational journey at B’nai Israel. For most, it will be the first time they are visiting Israel. During the five years that I have been associated with Congregation B’nai Israel, which have flown by so fast, I have had the privilege to work with all of these wonderful students. I have gotten to know them well and to prepare most for their b’nai mitzvah, and all of them for Confirmation. Five participants were just confirmed two weeks ago in what was an outstanding ceremony. Their presentations were deeply thought provoking and maturely composed. All who were privileged to be present at Confirmation were deeply moved. I know all sixteen teenager participants as fine, bright, young Jewish adults, and am so glad to have had the opportunity to (hopefully) positively impact their Judaic and spiritual growth. This trip to Israel is a fitting climax, to be followed, I pray, by further lifelong impactful Jewish experiences, and that this will be just one of many opportunities they will have throughout their lives to visit or perhaps study, if not live in Israel. This is the second B’nai Israel Confirmation trip I have had the honor to lead, and the fourth that our congregation has been able to provide practically free of charge to participants. If past trips are any indication of what to expect, they are in for an extraordinary experience. It has the potential to change their lives forever as young, emerging proud Jews. Together we will traverse our ancient, yet modern holy land of the Torah. Our students’ Judaic studies will come alive as we travel from the Lebanese and Syrian borders in the north, to the Dead Sea and Masada in the south. We will go from Jerusalem in the east to the trendy metropolis of Tel Aviv to the west…and so much more. We will spend Shabbat and the holiday of Shavuot,

which celebrates the giving of the Torah, appropriately at the Kotel, Judaism’s holiest place, dating back two thousand years to the Second Temple. It is a true accomplishment for our congregation to be able to provide these free trips, and something for all of us to be so deeply proud of. Few congregations in the world, of any size or wealth, are able to provide such a rare opportunity. It has, to date, impacted over 60 of our students, as it will continue to do. These trips have been made possible through the generous support of the Sherwin and Naomi Kripke Israel Program Fund. We are deeply indebted and grateful to the Kripke family for their forethought in establishing this fund to provide such a valuable Judaic benefit to B’nai Israel’s students. Additional funding is provided by the Steinberg Family SKIP (Send Kids to Israel Program) Fund and the support of the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation’s Israel Experience Fund. Funds were also raised by the students to offset the cost of their trip through their “Hire a Mensch” Program. Congregants hired them for odd jobs like raking, weeding, computer help, etc. and made donations to assist. It truly takes a village to send 16 young adults to Israel! On the Shabbat before we depart, June 4th, we will gather at the Torah for a group Aliyah and tefilat haderech, a prayer for the journey. I invite our congregation to attend events planned upon our return where the students will report to various affiliates of our congregation on their most memorable experience and share photos and reminiscences. As we look forward eagerly to this life altering experience, we invite you to follow our progress and check daily reports as we are able to access internet at my blog www.cantorlichterman.org.

Development Corporation for Israel. This is not an offering which can be made only by prospectus. Read the prospectus carefully before investing to fully evaluate the risks associated with investing in Israel bonds. Member FINRA

I have mixed feelings about THIS month of June because my term as president of Congregation B’nai Israel will be over. At our congregational annual meeting to be held on Friday, June 17, new trustees, officers and a new president will be installed. Having had the opportunity to lead our congregation for the last two years has been both rewarding and challenging. Over the last two years, our congregation has seen an increased number of new members along with a re-newed emphasis in providing popular adult education and video programs. Our daily minyan would not be possible without the constant dedication and efforts of our core minyan group led by Cantor Lichterman and spearheaded by the beloved and long serving Howard Rosenbaum. Yasher koach Howard. Every outgoing president has unfinished goals for which he or she would have liked to see realized. Areas that I would like to see our new administration consider are: 1. Establishing a “150th Legacy Fund” to further ensure our congregation’s financial future. L’dor v’dor, from this generation to the

next one should be our legacy. 2. Develop a long term strategic plan which enlists our congregants to share their views on programs and services for which they

would be willing to support financially and with their presence. 3. Develop a more structured Adult Religious learning program to augment our successful Adult Education events. To the credit of our synagogue administrator Chuck Traugott and our board of trustees, our congregation’s finances are in good order, having run surpluses each of the last three years. Chuck Traugott, Rhoda Miller and Leslie Podolsky take care of congre-gant needs with sensitivity and caring. As members themselves, they understand how to get things done for the benefit of our shul. Kim Brody, our David S. Stone Religious School principal who, along with an excellent teaching staff, has done an excellent job help-ing to provide a loving education for our youth. I am confident that she has the ability to lead her staff as we undertake new initiatives to “raise the bar” on enhancing the religious school experience for her students. Our building and grounds have never looked better, thanks to the hard work and care of Larry Johnson, our building facilities manager. He is one of the welcoming faces at CBI and would appreciate a “high five” for his hard work. Providing a delicious Kiddush meal for our congregants and guests would not be possible without the attention to detail of the hard-working Karen McQuade who often works along side Miriam Beckerman in our kitchen. Miriam selflessly donates her time and creativity to provide an opportunity for our members to share a meal and enjoy a good kibbitz each Shabbat. My wife Anne and I have been members of Congregation B’nai Israel since 1970 and witnessed the inspirational teaching of Rabbis Morton Goldberg and Fishel Perlmutter, z’l. CBI has had sustained rabbinical leadership until 2013 when Cantor Ivor Lichter-man undertook the huge task of becoming our congregation’s religious leader. To say the least, leading a congregation is an unusual role for a cantor. For him and his wife Jan, it was a brave undertaking but also a wise move by our board of trustees in 2013. Over the last three years, we have seen our cantor grow into this role as our religious leader and his cantorial and speaking skills are nothing short of amazing. I would like to express my appreciation to him for his kindness in helping this poor synagogue president learn from his patient teaching. Our congregation is stronger, more joyful and more welcoming under his leadership. I have been privileged to serve as president of this wonderful congregation which has many members who are committed to each other and to our synagogue family. Our excellent board of trustees have given selflessly of their time and wisdom in steering our congregation on a firmer path. For that I am eternally grateful. Our incoming president, Dr. Howard Rosenberg who is also wise and brave deserves our support as he with the gentle support of his wife Ann, lead our synagogue family to an even brighter future. His presidency will continue to be defined by those who reach out to him with goodwill, to work as his partner as so many have helped me. I wish him and his board good luck. I will remain availa-ble to help them in any way that I can.

Youth & Education News…………………………………….

David S. Stone Religious School

The school year came to a close on May 15 with a lovely Confir-mation service led by Alexa Bader, Emmie Brody, Asher Krip-ke, Ian Mahoney and Margaret Roberts. They are now packing for the best trip of their lives. We are thrilled to have sixteen students and three chaperones go on a trip of a lifetime to Israel, departing on June 6 and returning on June 16. This trip would not be possible without the generosity of the Sherwin and Naomi Kripke Fund. Our students did an amazing job, with the support of our incredible congregants, in raising almost $2,000 through the Hire a Mensch project. We are looking forward to hearing about all of our students’ Jewish summer experiences, whether it be camp or a trip to Isra-el. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. Please mark your calen-dars for a welcome back picnic on the first day of Religious school on August 28.
