IN MEMORIAM

The Congregation extends our condolences to the family and friends of Marion Goldberg, Alvin Kommor, Arnold Levitz, Suzy Post, Sonia Saag and Elaine Speevak.

TIGHTENING BUILDING SECURITY IN THE SYNAGOGUE

In an effort to keep everyone safe, we are asking Preschool parents to only enter the building through the Preschool, and

AJ members to only enter the building through the Blue Rose Garden entrance. The Preschool staff knows their parents and grandparents, but they don’t necessarily know our members and vice-versa. Therefore, members and guests who are unknown to the Preschool staff are likely to be redirected to the synagogue entrance. Entering through the Blue Rose Garden entrance doors will prevent our members from being inconvenienced in this manner. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation!

AJ PRAGMATIC SPIRITUALITY

Join us from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. in the AJ Benovitz Library for Pragmatic Spirituality on the dates listed below:

February 3rd – “Winter and the Dark Night of the Soul – Metaphors for Transformation.”

February 10th - “Know Thyself – Recognizing Our Emotional Triggers.”

Pragmatic Spirituality is an open discussion group that has been meeting twice a month since August 2017. We welcome you to attend and participate or listen quietly. The seed of the discussions is a brief inspiration (a poem,

reading, quote, song, video or blogpost) by a spiritual thinker e.g. Jonathan Sacks, Tosha Silver, John O’Donohue, Parker Palmer, Leonard Cohen, Rumi, Mary Oliver, and others who encourage inner dialogue and listening to one’s “inner teacher.”

Woven throughout are examples of the Jewish perspective on attention to the soul, as well as how this inner work impacts our outer work – i.e. our jobs, relationships, communities, etc. We address how we find purpose and meaning, how we navigate practical challenges in our daily lives, and how we mitigate stressors in this modern time.

The intention is to foster a community that supports applying spiritual thinking to daily life. This is not supposed to be a substitute for Torah study, Jewish education, Melton or a traditional worship service, but rather a complementary opening for those seeking additional ways to connect Judaism, their soul, and their daily lives.

The group is facilitated by Courtney Snyder, MD (Holistic Psychiatrist) and Marty Snyder (Business & Leadership Advisor). For more information, please email Dr. Courtney Snyder at: [email protected].

Mark your calendar for these upcoming sessions: March 10th & March 24th

NEW TAX LAW CHANGES AFFECTING SPONSORSHIPS FOR

MUSIC FESTIVAL & MINYANAIRE DINNER

In prior years, programs such as the AJ Music Festival and the Minyanaire Dinner included the opportunity to be a sponsor, which helped cover the cost of these programs. Dinners

and/or admissions were included in those sponsorships as a way to show appreciation to our sponsors.

On July 1, 2018, new Kentucky sales tax laws were imposed, and as a result, AJ is no longer able to combine tax-deductible items (such as sponsorships) and non-tax-deductible items (such as admissions and dinners) in a combined fee.

When filling out the reservation forms this year for the Music Festival and/or the Minyanaire Dinner, you will see that sponsorship opportunities no longer include admissions or tickets.

AJ did reduce the levels of sponsorships, so that the cost of a sponsorship plus an admission or dinner is comparable to previous years. Please remember to order admissions and/or dinners in addition to sponsorships. Thanks for your understanding and support of these programs!

CONTINUATION OF BEYOND BORDERS

INSTRUCTOR: Professor Ed Segal

We open with the Crimean War and the weakening of the Ottoman Empire, move to the end of WW1, and then continue to the establishment of the State of Israel. The goal of this course is to provide an enhanced vision of a complex situation becoming more and more a political football. The Arab states, the State of Israel, The United States all have different visions of what a solution should be. In this course, we try to focus on a fourth group, the people living on the ground.

VAYIKRA/LEVITICUS (THIRD BOOK OF THE TORAH):

A CALL TO HOLINESS

INSTRUCTOR: Deborah Slosberg

Hidden beneath the surface of Vayikra, we find messages and values that are still relevant to the universal human condition. Some of the themes examined are responses to tragedy, birth and parenthood, seeking forgiveness, and bringing holiness into one’s daily life.

MODERN MIDRASH INSTRUCTOR:

Rabbi Laura Metzger

The classical Jewish literary form called Midrash is collections of stories and teachings that seek to answer some of the questions we are always asking, questions like: Why did Lot’s wife turn around? Did Jacob learn anything from wrestling with the angel? Midrash began in the most ancient times and continues as long as there are questions and stories in response. In this course, we’ll learn how Midrash works by reading a range of contemporary interpretations by poets, novelists, scholars, rabbis, and we might even weave some of our own interpretations into stories.

LOUISVILLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL COMES TO AJ!

The Louisville Jewish Film Festival will be showing the film, “The Samuel Project” at Adath Jeshurun on Wednesday, February 27th at 7:00 p.m. In this heartwarming film, Eli gets to know his grandfather when he makes him the subject of an animated art project for school. Eli discovers that his grandpa was saved from Nazi capture in Germany by a young woman when he was just a boy. As they reconnect, the teenager hears the story that hasn’t been told in 75 years. This is a nice family film for ages 10 and over. A reception will be held following the film.

The Film Festival will showcase eleven films this year between between February 7th and 27th. Some of the highlights are listed below: February 9th at 7:30 p.m. at Bellarmine University: “Who Will Write Our History”, a documentary that mixes the writings of the Warsaw Ghetto Archives with stunning dramatizations by Roberta Grossman, who will be speaking that evening. Sponsored by the Goldstein/Leibson Fund at the Jewish Community of Louisville. February 13th at 7:00 p.m. at Village 8 Theatres: Two films will be shown: “Foreign Land” and “Jerusalem In Between” as well as a discussion led by documentary filmmaker, Elad Laor. The speaker is sponsored by Cantor Lipp’s Discretionary Fund. February 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at Village 8 Theatres: “Working Woman” is about Orna, who starts her new job and is promoted to work closely with her boss. However, it isn’t long before Orna realizes that her career advancement has come with a hefty price tag when her boss makes inappropriate advances. Sponsored by Cantor Lipp’s Discretionary Fund.

A complete schedule of films can be found at: www.jewishlouisville.org/filmfestival or by calling Marsha Bornstein at 238-2731.

Volunteer With Your AJ Family & Friends! AJ is hosting a Couple’s Night at Gilda's Club. This is a Tikkun Olam opportunity to bring cheer to couples battling cancer. Each couple consists of one partner who is actively receiving cancer treatment. Please come out and volunteer on Monday, February 18, 2019. AJ members will serve dinner and drinks to these couples from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed throughout the day (10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.) both before and after the dinner to assist with the following tasks:

Please sign up by contacting Jessica Carner at Gilda’s Club (371-3038 or [email protected]) and let her know your preferred task. Jessica can also provide additional information on what is required for each of the tasks. Students ages 12 and older are welcome to assist with the setup and décor shifts in the afternoon. Because wine will be served during the dinner, beginning at 6:00 p.m., all volunteers must be at least age 20. The dinner will be held at Gilda’s Clubhouse located at 633 Baxter Avenue, 40204. Thank you in advance for helping to provide a special evening for these special people!
