“If All the Seas Were Ink”

By Ilana Kurshan ~ 2017

“In this deeply personal and often hilarious story, Kurshan shows us how the Talmud’s thousands of strange and demanding pages, read one page a day for seven years, become a conversation about how to live one’s life. Kurshan awakens us to our imperfect world’s hidden magnificence – and to the power of literature to inspire human resilience. A stunning, gorgeous memoir.” ~ Dara Horn

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The following are excerpts of a speech delivered to the Congregation on Yom Kippur by President, Bill Esakov:

Shana Tova! I’m Bill Esakov, and I’m the President of Adath Jeshurun. Before I could make AJ my spiritual home, I had to find my new physical home. Thirty years ago, my family moved to Louisville for a job opportunity at Humana. I am from West Hartford, Connecticut, and had never been to Louisville.

After we finally moved to Louisville, we attended Shabbat morning services at several synagogues. I found AJ and was invited to Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services. I attended the Kol Nidre service, where the guest Rabbi was officiating. His voice sounded familiar. I stared at the man on the bimah and recognized him as Rabbi Singer. The same Rabbi Singer who had led my synagogue in West Hartford! He had officiated at my Bar Mitzvah and at my wedding! Sign or coincidence? I went home and told Dora that we had found our synagogue!

During our 30 years here, we have found AJ to be a warm, inviting place where we have felt a part of the community and have made many friends. It is because of this atmosphere that I joined the Board of Trustees, and have been given the opportunity to serve as your President. My vision is for AJ to be around so that future generations can have the same experiences that all of our families have enjoyed.

As we are nearing the end of the High Holy Days and our period of introspection, I ask you to consider some sobering statistics. Every year for the past decade, between 7,000 and 10,000 American religious institutions have closed their doors. As the Louisville Jewish population has aged, AJ has seen a decline in membership; however, we’ve been able to hold our own.

The national religious landscape in America has seen a generational and societal shift as a declining number of Americans report being affiliated with an organized religious group. Aging populations, shifting demographics, changing attitudes, and busy lives all play a part. With fewer members, many religious institutions can no longer afford to keep their doors open. Adath Jeshurun has been fortunate. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to sustain our shul, despite the decline in dues income from having an aging membership. We want to continue to have the financial resources to be here for all of you, your children, and grandchildren. Adath Jeshurun is taking these statistics very seriously as we plan today for future generations.

Although our 61-year-old building is currently in good shape, we know that upkeep and repairs are constant expenses. Thanks to your generosity, we hope to be able to have the financial resources to cover these expenses. We also hope to continue providing a full range of religious and educational services, and maintain the staff which works so hard on our behalf to provide them.

AJ has been a blessing to many families. Together, we can ensure that our shul remains vibrant and strong. At this time, I ask everyone to join me in making a High Holy Day pledge. We deeply appreciate your support which ensures that AJ will be here for you and your family, both now and in the future.

Epilogue -- It’s not too late to make a High Holy Day Pledge. Please visit www.adathjeshurun.com/highholydayappeal or call the AJ office at 458-5359. Thank you for your support!

LLIIFFEE && LLEEGGAACCYY PPRROOGGRRAAMM

The following are excerpts of a speech delivered to the Congregation on Yom Kippur by Life & Legacy Chairman, Sidney Hymson:

Thank you for the opportunity to speak briefly about an exciting program called the Life & Legacy Program. Life & Legacy is a national program initiated by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of

Louisville and with support from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence. Its goal is to strengthen the future of our Jewish community by leaving after-lifetime permanent legacies to synagogues and other Jewish agencies.

As I mention each of the following, please stand if it applies to you: If you were married at Adath Jeshurun. If you, your children, or grandchildren had their Bar or Bat mitzvah ceremony at Adath Jeshurun. If you, your children, or grandchildren were confirmed at Adath Jeshurun. If you have ever read Torah, chanted the Haftorah, or davened from the bimah at Adath Jeshurun. If you have ever attended Minyan or any other service at Adath Jeshurun. If you have ever attended AJ’s Community Passover Seder. If you have ever attended the AJ Music Festival. If you have ever participated in a Louisville Melton class. If you have ever volunteered for any mitzvah projects, committees, or other activities, attended an adult studies class, or belonged to any interest group at Adath Jeshurun. If you have ever traveled to Israel with Rabbi Slosberg. Finally, if you have ever recited the Mourner’s Kaddish for a loved one at Adath Jeshurun, or if you have a loved one remembered on a plaque in the George and Miriam Blue Memorial Alcove at Adath Jeshurun.

If you look around, you will see that almost everyone here is standing, which shows that we all have strong ties to Adath Jeshurun and to each other, our Adath Jeshurun family.

In order to enable future generations to experience the same shared feeling of our Adath Jeshurun family that we have today, it is essential that we continue to endow Adath Jeshurun with the financial ability to do all that will be needed, which is where the Life & Legacy Program comes in.

The Life & Legacy Program is a painless way to support our shul. It enables you to easily leave a legacy to Adath Jeshurun in your will, or as a beneficiary of life insurance, or an IRA after your lifetime. Filling out a very brief one-page form is all that is needed to initiate your participation in the program. The form can be downloaded at: www.adathjeshurun.com/lifeandlegacy. Your support will make a huge difference in sustaining Adath Jeshurun's viability for the future and is very much appreciated. Thank you for your consideration and wishing you a Shana tova!

Now that the holidays are over (full disclosure...I’m writing this when they’re just about to begin), I want to bring you up to date on what is going on in the professional life of your professional liturgist.

Ever heard of the “Curse of Knowledge?” It’s not about the curse of wisdom or knowing things per se, but rather the

belief that because we know something, other people must also. The people who most often make a profit overcoming this “curse” are PR professionals, e.g. Mad Men.

Well, I’m not a PR professional, so let me use this as just one forum to let you know how the year is looking to play out in my world. I’m guessing you all know that I’m intricately involved in Bar/Bat-mitzvah preparation, pretty much all life-cycle events, daily minyan (except for my day off on Wednesdays), Shabbat services, Torah readers, holidays, and more. Here are a few others:

Preschool: As I have for many years, I meet with most classes on a monthly basis, telling stories and singing songs with the kids in class-size groups. I’ve decided to add a regular visit to their weekly sing-a-long on Friday mornings. There are few things we do as professionals that are more fun than that! College Outreach: We are again keeping in touch with our college kids with holiday care packages. If you have a college kid who is away from home, please provide us with their contact information. We recently sent our college kids a Rosh Hashanah greeting, with more to come. To sign them up, go to this link: www.adathjeshurun.com/college. Melton: I’ll be teaching the 2nd-year Crossroads Comprehensive Curriculum for Melton starting this month. (Deborah Slosberg was nice enough to start the Comprehensive Courses AFTER the holidays this year!) I’ll also be teaching a specific American Jewish Music graduate course in the winter from December 11th - March 7th, which can be taken on Tuesday evenings or Thursday mornings. If you’ve already taken the first year Melton course, here’s

your chance to take the second one! To register for any Melton course, visit: www.adathjeshurun.com/melton_courses. Louisville Orchestra: They will be returning to AJ on Thursday, October 11th! Bravo, Teddy et al! Kristallnacht: As this year will be the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, AJ will be hosting a communal commemoration on Thursday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m. Survivors and history will be intertwined in a manner that will assure that we never forget the warning signs again. Mission to Uganda: Due to the Israeli Rabbinate’s decision to reject the Jewish Identity of the Abayudayah, a Jewish tribe in Uganda that have been living as Jews for almost a century, the Cantors Assembly is organizing a mission of support to Uganda, from which we will create a musical recording. Cantors Assembly Convention: From May 19 - 23, 2019, Louisville will be hosting my colleagues for its annual get-together at the Louisville Marriott Downtown. There will be concerts, recitals, educational sessions, and many other opportunities to hear, learn from, and interact with my colleagues. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting once-in-a-lifetime experience for the Louisville Jewish Community. Thanks go to the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence and the Adolf and Sara van der Walde and Israel Rosenbloom Fund for helping to underwrite the convention. Radio: My predecessor, Cantor Portnoy is in the process of retiring from the Main Line Reform Temple he has served since he left AJ 24 years ago, but you’d never know it. Among the many things he is doing in his spare time is hosting a weekly radio show on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m., with rebroadcasts on Fridays at 10:00 a.m. Topics for October include: “The Power of the Hebrew Alphabet”, “Movie Magic”, “Judaism and Money”, “Ghosts”, “Dybbuks”, “Kabbalah” and “Mysticism.” To listen or find an archived broadcast, go to wwdbam.com.

I hope that all of you have begun a sweet and meaningful New Year!

Israel is celebrating its 70th birthday all year long. The celebration continues on Sunday, November 11th as AJ hosts a painting party with Hadassah. The party takes place at Uptown Art, 2458 Bardstown Road from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. Everyone will have the opportunity to paint his or her very own version of the Western Wall. The subsidized cost is $19.00 per person, and includes all materials, step-by-step instructions, and sales tax. No painting experience is necessary! Snacks will be provided by Hadassah, with additional snacks and drinks available for purchase. This event is generously subsidized by the Harold & Frankye Klein Gordon Event Fund of Congregation Adath Jeshurun.

Reservations with payment are required by October 15th. We have reserved the private room which seats 16 budding artists. After 16 paid reservations are received, a waiting list will be started. If we can get 40 reservations, Uptown Art will make their large event room available to accommodate more participants. For additional information, contact Lisa Goldberg at [email protected] or 851-3867. Reservations can be made online using the instructions to the right:
