Oakland

Presbyterian Church will

be hosting a 13-week

GriefShare program beginning January 9, 2020. No matter what

the circumstances, grief recovery is a painful process. Many

grieving people find that they are only just beginning the work of

healing when friends and family have returned to their daily life

routines. Your bereavement experience may be recent or not so

recent. By joining this program, you will find encouragement,

comfort, and help in grieving the death of a spouse, child, parent,

sibling, other family member, or friend. You will learn how to

recognize the symptoms of being stuck in grief and that you do not

need to live in bondage to certain emotions. You will learn valuable

information about facing your new normal in life and renewing your

hope for the future.

The cost of the program is $10 (for the participant workbook).

Meetings will be held on Thursdays from 2 - 4 pm in Room 107

beginning January 9 and ending April 2, 2020. Child care is

available. Please register by emailing the church office at

[email protected] OR by visiting:

https://www.griefshare.org/groups/114911

All of us at Oakland Presbyterian Church extend our sympathy to Michelle Friedman and family on the passing of Michelle’s father, Tommy DeLoach. You are all in our prayers at this time.

From the Pastor

As we begin a new year, we often make resolutions about changes we are going to make - what we are going to do and what we are going to avoid in the coming year.

More exercise.

Less sugar.

And so on.

I’d like to offer the following guidance attributed to Zig Ziglar:

If you see someone falling behind, walk beside them.

If you see someone being ignored, find a way to include them.

Always remind people of their worth.

One small act could mean the world to them.

As people who love and follow Jesus, the One who taught us to love one another, let’s make 2020 a year when kindness flows from our hearts.

With warm regards and best wishes for a happy new year,

- Pastor Bob

The Preschool will be hosting an Enrollment Open House on Thursday, February 6, 2020 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. This will be an opportunity for interested families to tour the Preschool facilities, learn more about our school, meet the teachers and some existing students, and enroll in the 2020-21 school year, which begins August 10, 2020.

From Preschool Director Laurie Templin

Happy New Year

2020! The Preschool

returns to school Tuesday,

January 7. We begin our

New Year with Chapel and

learning about the visit of

the Wise Men to Jesus.

Pastor Bob will also be

teaching us later in the

month about Dr. Martin

Luther King, Jr., and there

will be no school on

Monday, January 20 in

honor of Dr. King’s

birthday.

This is the time of year when our friends in all our age groups

really show tremendous development of their skills, and it is so fun

to experience with them! Our VPK students will all be given their

second formal state assessment this month as part of our VPK

program. It is always exciting to document their progress. The VPK

students receive their third and final formal assessment in April.

We wish you all a blessed and healthy 2020!

Church Directory Access - Download our App!

The family of Fran Stanford would like to thank so many people for their help during the celebration of her life. Everyone in the congregation, staff, deacons, and elders did so much to make it not only effortless for the family, but also a truly uplifting (and entertaining!) service. The music, homily, and warmth provided much comfort to our family.

Dan Bray extends his thanks and gratitude to the many people who filled out a thank you card for him. He was touched to read the messages from everyone. He has been honored to work here for the past seven years, and he is hopeful that he can visit from time to time. Thank you all!

New Sermon Series

All church members and friends are encouraged to access

our online directory through Instant Church Directory. With the

online directory, you’ll have access to all church members’ photos

and contact information, as well as the ability to view groups such

as Rings of Care, Deacons, Committee members, and Elders. We

also have birthdays and anniversaries listed if the information has

been provided to us.

The directory is available as an iOS and Android app

(search for Instant Church Directory), and it is also available

online at instantchurchdirectory.com. For security reasons, you

will not be able to access the directory through the app unless

your email address is in our directory. If you attempt to login and

it rejects you, give Stacey a call at 407-656-4452 to resolve the

error.

The directory is still available to download through our

website, but the smartphone app is the BEST way to be sure you

have the most current directory, as it refreshes every time you

open it and will always show the most recent updates.

Join us in worship in the new year as Pastor Bob begins a new

The Book Nook with Pat Hines

Although death is a natural part of life, it is never easy no matter how old one is. This month’s books focus on helping children deal with the death of loved ones.

Emergent Readers (PK and K) and Primary (Grades 1 and 2):

• Something Very Sad Happened by Bonnie Zucker. Written for children ages two and three, Zucker’s words are meant to help young children understand death. She also provides additional resources for parents and caregivers.

• Saying Goodbye to Daddy by Judith Vigna. When her father is killed in a car accident, Clare’s mother and grandfather help her understand death and her varied emotions.

• I Miss You: A First Look at Death by Pat Thomas. This book acknowledges that grief is a normal feeling after someone close has died.

• The Memory Box: A Book About Grief by Joanna Rowland. This book provides a concrete way for a child to remember a loved one.

• Stinky Stern Forever by Michelle Edwards. In this early chapter book, Matthew “Stinky” Stern is always causing trouble. However, when Stinky accidentally dies, his classmates have to deal with the loss of someone no one liked.

Intermediate (Grades 3, 4, and 5):

• Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. This 1978 Newbery Medal Book tells the story of a friendship that ends too soon when an unexpected tragedy happens.

• Missing May by Cynthia Rylant. Winner of the 1993 Newbery Medal, Summer and Ob’s lives change drastically when their beloved May unexpectedly dies. Dealing with their loss, they eventually realize that they can go on living without May.

• Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graff. This book was on the 2011-2012 Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award list. Annie obsesses/worries about everything after her older brother, Jared, dies. After spending time with a new neighbor, Mrs. Finch, Annie learns that they share a common bond—grief. As their friendship grows, Annie begins to let go of her anxieties, and together, they learn to live once again.

Middle School and Beyond:

• The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart. Coyote and her father, Rodeo, have been on the road in an old yellow school bus for five years, ever since the death of her mom and two sisters. However, when Coyote learns about the upcoming plans to demolish the park where she, her mom, and two sisters buried a “Memory Box,” she makes plans to get back “home.” This is a beautiful story about friendship, love, and the journey of healing after such a tragic loss.

“And at the end of the day, if you give them half a chance, people want to help other people.” ~Coyote Summer

• The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin. When Suzy’s best friend, Franny, drowns, Suzy becomes preoccupied with jellyfish. In the process of grieving her loss, Suzy sets out to prove that Franny’s death was due to a deadly jellyfish sting.

“Saying goodbye is important…It’s what allows us to begin living again.”
