As the 2008-09 school year comes to a close, we reflect on a successful firstyear of West Babylon Schools’ districtwide character education program. Firstconceived last spring, the program expands on the traditional academic focusof elementary education by incorporating character-based lessons and themesinto the existing curriculum throughout the school year, encouraging studentsto become well-rounded citizens who display the six essential pillars of goodcharacter: respect, responsibility, kindness/compassion, honesty/integrity,perseverance and citizenship. Throughout the year, each pillar wasincorporated into the elementary curriculum through common literature, classroom activities and a variety of schoolwide programs.
The students of Forest Avenue Elementary School shared their charactereducation lessons with Forest Avenue alumnus Staff Sergeant Thomas Teufeland Sergeant Brian Tirado, members of the United States Army who recentlycompleted a one-year tour of duty in Iraq. During a celebration on June 22,each grade level presented to the two servicemen its own poem, song or storyfocusing on the six pillars of good character.
Santapogue Elementary School’s students, staff, parents and friendsjoined together on the playground for their own celebration of the charactereducation program. Classes created paper chains, with each chain linkrepresenting a happy memory of different character traits that had beenshared during the school year. Each class’ chain was then attached to theothers, creating one long chain of memories of a “Bucket Filling” year (a reference to the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Daily Guide to Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud, one of the inspirations for thecharacter education program).
The faculty at John F. Kennedy Elementary School was busy with charactereducation throughout the year. Across all grade levels, teachers introducedeach of the pillars incorporating character education-themed literature. The
significance of each of the pillars was reinforced, and students practiced themthrough interactive read-alouds, social activities, reader's theater, role-playingsituations and personal writing activities. Special-area teachers also integratedthe pillars of the character education program through musical selections, artprojects, library lessons and physical education activities.
At South Bay Elementary School, the students were immersed in the sixpillars through literature, cultural arts presentations and special decorationsthroughout the school, including a huge tree on the wall in the main lobby, with each branch representing a different pillar. When a student demonstratedthat character trait, his or her name was placed on a leaf and added to the tree.On June 25, the school officially dedicated its character education quilt, whichcontains artwork and writing from every class. It will be proudly displayedin the lobby, along with two beautifully painted panels that read “South BaySchool – A Building of Good Character,” a generous gift created with thehelp of the West Babylon High School Art Club.
The students and staff of Tooker Avenue Elementary School put their loveof character education on display for all to see on June 8, as the entire Tookerfamily gathered on the lawn to form a giant heart. Read more about this storyon page 10.
Teachers at West Babylon Junior High School won a garden grant thathonored the school with $1,500 to transform the courtyard into a tranquiloutdoor learning environment. To help celebrate good character and the pillarof “citizenship,” students gave up their lunch periods and took part in thiscommunity-based project by planting flowers and beautifying the garden. The students proved that they can do their share to make our school andcommunity better while simultaneously enhancing the environment. OnJune 10, there was a ribbon-cutting celebration to recognize the school and the students’ hard work.
