WINE CLUB NEWSLETTER

All of us at Kuleto Estate would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Winemaker, John Clews. John comes to us with over 25 years of experience in the wine industry. Let’s take a moment to get to know John.

Q: Tell us about your background and how you got into winemaking.

A: I was born in Shabani, Southern Rhodesia and went to school at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. I started my career working in London as an accountant, but my passion for wine let me to swap my note pad for a crush pad and pursue a career in winemaking. I moved to the United States and attended the University of California, Davis to receive my M.S. in Viticulture and Enology and haven’t looked back since.

Q: Tell us about your winemaking experience prior to joining Kuleto.

A: I’ve been lucky to have worked for many great wineries, all of which have shaped my winemaking style. After graduating from UC Davis, I worked a harvest at Preston, Dry Creek, then at Newton in St. Helena as cellar master. I went on to work for Konocti in Lake County as winemaker and have since held winemaking positions for Steele winery in Lake County and Clos Du Val in Napa.

Q: What were your first impressions of the Kuleto property and what makes Kuleto wines unique?

A: Kuleto is a phenomenal property. It’s a secluded mountaintop estate with varying topography, soil types and exposures which make Kuleto wines so special. Ten acres up here need to be broken into ten or so little vineyard blocks. Each block is so different, like the patchwork on a quilt. This makes blending these different lots very interesting and exciting.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not immersed in winemaking?

A: In my free time I like to stay active in the outdoors by hiking, cycling and playing tennis in addition to reading and listening to classical music. My favorite place to travel is Europe because of the varied cultures, food and wine. And, of course, spend time with my family.

2013 KULETO ESTATE LONE ACRE CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA VALLEY

2013 KULETO ESTATE SANGIOVESE , NAPA VALLEY

Composition:

Vineyard:Aging:

Alcohol:TA:pH:Cases:

94% Sangiovese, 5% Syrah, 1% Zinfandel (co-fermented)Kuleto Estate18 months in 33% new French oak and Hungarian oak puncheons14.5%5.6 g/L3.75158

Don’t let the lighter color of the 2011 Sangiovese fool you. It is packed with flavor. Right up front you’re hit with a ripe strawberry aroma in balance with a charred tomato character. Typical of Sangiovese, it walks the lines between fruit and vegetable, and sweet and savory. The cooler vintage definitely made its imprint on this wine with subtle fresh wax and cherry blossom undertones. The structure, as always, is fascinating. It’s like biting through a hard cherry candy with a gooey center – tough on the outside and sweet and soft in the middle.

Our 2013 Sangiovese conjures up the warmest days up here on the mountain. Sweet black licorice, warm red apple skins, and melted caramel (think a candy apple) dominate the nose and mouth. Some years this wine leans more toward the fresh red fruits of a Rosso di Montalcino or a high-end Chianti, and other years it resembles the riper, more powerful and age worthy wines of Brunello. This year, it’s definitely the latter.

Composition:

Vineyard:Aging:Alcohol:TA:pH:Cases:

90% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (co-fermented)Kuleto Estate17 months in 33% new Hungarian oak puncheons14.3%6.2 g/L3.58266

Composition:

83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot,5% Syrah, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet FrancKuleto Estate 30 months in 40% new French oak14.9%6.2 g/L3.66119

The idea with our ‘Lone Acre’ Cabernet is to create a wine that is at once Old and New World in impression, i.e. the fruit is deemphasized in the aroma, but the mouth is rich and flavorful without being heavy. Seamless complexity is what our Lone Acre is all about. Aromas of plum and red apple are balanced by a slight smokiness. The mouth showcases dark fruit flavors that are accented by soft tannins that coat the mouth. A graceful acidity on the finish adds a liveliness to the palate and promise of a long cellar life.

Kuleto 2011 Napa Valley Sangiovese

This bottling is a near classic version of a traditional varietal that takes us back to Tuscany. Portabella & Kale Lasagna Roll–Ups with Heirloom Tomato Purée is an ideal pairing for this Sangiovese. The combined flavors of dried herbs, spice and red fruits is a fantastic fall combination! – Robert Smith, MS

2013 KULETO ESTATE MALBEC, NAPA VALLEY

Composition:

Vineyard:Aging:

Alcohol:TA:pH:Cases:

93% Malbec, 5% Syrah, 2% Zinfandel(from a co-fermented lot)Kuleto Estate 16 months in 20% new Hungarianoak puncheons14.45%6.5 g/L3.63135

We prize our estate Malbec for its ability to come to full flavor maturity on the vine without the high sugars (and subsequent high alcohols) often associated with mountain-top reds in the Napa Valley. It’s all about exotic aromas and freshness in the mouth. The 2013 is a gorgeously fragrant wine. Though a touch riper than in years past, it still displays the freshness that we prize in the variety. The nose is dominated by an intense huckleberry or ripe cranberry aroma. Underneath, flavors of fresh oregano and vanilla bean add complexity and make it an ideal food wine.

Our Annual Winemaker Dinner held on Saturday, September 2nd was an evening of delicious cuisine and excellent wine. Guests were greeted with ’14 Homestead Chardonnay and went on to ’14 Syrah. The seated dinner on the patio debuted ’13 ElCoyote and ’13 Danielli side by side. Guests also had the chance to meet our new winemaker, John Clews and hear about his background and future with Kuleto.
