Road Closure Update:

First Baptist Church has officially withdrawn their petition to close a portion of 2nd Avenue North in front of their Church. Our Administrative

Council, after being informed of this petition, stated its opinion opposing the closing of 2nd Avenue North. Following one City Council Meeting and a separate meeting between all parties including the City of Pell City, First Baptist Church representatives stated that they were going to recommend that the Petition be withdrawn. That has now been accomplished by a letter to the Pell City Council. While we do not like to oppose the actions of another church, it was the opinion of the Administrative Council that this action was not in the best interest of our Church and Daycare. Thank you to all who participated in the City Council meeting and the subsequent meeting at First Baptist Church.

Submitted by Ronnie Harris Administrative Council Chairperson

There is an expression “grief work”, which was coined by a psychiatrist, Erich Lindemann, in 1944 to describe what a person experiences as they go through following a significant loss. It is appropriate to understand this process as “work” because it takes so much energy - physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. Grief is not a passive experience where you just allow it to happen to you. You will find that there is a lot of work involved in living in the new reality where the loved one is no longer present in the same way. You will find yourself building a new identity and world for yourself that requires a new way of thinking, a new way of relating to others, new skills that must be learned, and new emotions that have to be managed. The work of grieving is exhausting, making it difficult to deal with ordinary daily tasks and decisions. You may find yourself questioning your mental or physical health. Two things are important to know – this is a normal reaction to significant loss, and there are resources that can help. If you would like more information or wish to speak to one of the pastors about this, please let us know.

Coming Home Again

A word on Coming Home and Staying Home from Full-time Clergy appointments announced at the end of April begins with an announcement that was not

made. I am very pleased to say that Belinda, Ava, and myself will continue in ministry with PCFUMC for another year. You may notice some change this Summer, though, as Ava takes a time of leave from PCFUMC to complete a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education(CPE) at Shelby Baptist Hospital. Support her in this time of growth and discernment. Rev. Arthur Harrison(Associate with us from 2012-2016) will also “stay home” at Alabaster First UMC, but will change roles, moving from Executive Pastor to Senior Pastor. Prayers for he, Julia, and the girls. “Coming home” is Rev. Sherill Clontz, who had served as our District Superintendent from 2011-2015 and will resume that role as Rev. Dr. Clinton Hubbard moves to Tuscaloosa First UMC as Senior Pastor. Clinton will make history as the first African-American lead Pastor of that 201 year-old church. Please pray for Sherill and Craig as they enter and Clinton and Gloria as they enter.

Each week, I encourage you to invite someone to join you in worship at PCFUMC. This past week, I found out that Dan Simpson did just that as he introduced me to some of his neighbors who had come at his invitation to Chapel in the Pines. He even invited them back to Wide Open another week. Now be honest, even in a very “churched” area like ours, you know there are thousands that are still looking for a place to call their spiritual home, quietly longing to Come Home to God. I happen to think we would be a great place to Come Home to God. Don’t you?

It is a joy to serve alongside you in ministry,

—Byron
