Well done to all the award winners in the Arts Awards. It was a wonderful evening. It was great to have Jonny Williams, the ballroom dancer and former Birkenhead College student, talk to

us about his career and present awards to our students. Our Arts Person of the Year winners, Mini Reptile Club, had the opportunity to record their single ‘Late Last October’ at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios this week, which was sponsored by the Lion Foundation ‘Play it Strange’ competition. Keep an eye on the Birkenhead College Performing Arts Facebook page, as well as their own Facebook and Instagram pages, for further details. Enjoy your holiday, although for senior students you need to use this time wisely to prepare yourself for the external exams next Term. Effort now will mean you can go into the summer holidays satisfied that you have given your best.

Sir Peter Blake Trust Virtual Reality Trial

Students from 9AL were involved in a Virtual Reality Trial program this week run by the Sir Peter Blake Trust. The program uses 3D video recorded from a number of locations in New Zealand’s marine environment including iconic places such as the Poor Knights Islands. The Virtual Reality provides students with a full surround view under the water so that they can compare the diversity of marine life in protected areas against the diversity of life in unprotected areas, as well as areas that have had significant impact from human activities – while not having to travel to the locations and get wet! The information gathered during the experience relates to topics in the Science curriculum including an NCEA topic that is covered at Level One.

It was a fantastic experience for the students involved and the Sir Peter Blake Trust are hoping to roll the program out to more students in the future.
