Special Collection – Priest Retirement Fund

Next weekend all parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be asked to give generously to support the Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests. At each Mass on June 11th and 12th , a second collection will be taken to benefit this important program. Currently, the fund provides for more than 100 priests who are retired. Over the next ten years, that number is expected to increase sig-nificantly. With minimal compensation, and in many cases, no pension, these men often retire with nothing to fall back upon. Your con-tributions can change that. The Priest Retirement Fund offers us a way to give back to our Catholic priests who have served us so faithfully. Your contribution will help archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in retirement. Help us offer thanks for their years of devotion to God, and faithful service to our parish communities.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING

Archdiocese of Los Angeles 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Together in Mission” Each one of us is called upon to share the gifts that God has blessed us with. In answer-ing the call we keep His message of faith and love alive to those who most need it. Your gift enables us to provide essential resources and ministries that enrich parish life, strength-en families, advance Church leadership and inspire and educate future generations of our faith. Through your generosity we have reached over half of our goal-those funds will keep un-derfunded parishes and schools open and serving the less fortunate. What a great act of mercy! Holy Redeemer-St James Parish Goal: $111,400 Amount paid to date: $67,245 If you have not made your 2016 pledge you can still do so on the TIM website

Dear friends in Christ,

This weekend we congratulate Msgr. Marc Trudeau on 25 years of Priestly service to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. That he began his ministry here at St. James and has now returned to support us has been a great blessing. Please join me in thanking God for him and his beautiful gift of priesthood. Blessings Msgr. Marc, ad mul-tos annos!

Our Parish Family stands between two wonderful events that I hope renew and gladden our hearts! Last week our Teens were drawn into the fullness of our Catholic Faith by the gift of Confirmation and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit! Continue to pray for them; for we believe that among them, God will do great works and build up the Kingdom of God! Perhaps there will be several future Religious Women, future Priests to serve our parishes, perhaps there are those who will teach in our Catholic Schools, become doctors who uphold the moral teachings of our Church while being healers of our bodies. God may have placed among us women or men who will find new energy sources or work to establish peace in the Middle East or else-where. There is no limit to what God can do in a person filled with the Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit set a fire in them!

And next week, our young people will make their First Holy Communion! Welcome them! Please make it your task to let them know how special and wonderful they are and the gift of receiving Jesus is to you and to the Church! We should overwhelm them on this day with love and celebration; rooting forever in their memory the glory of this day! I ask you to do this so they remember. And that remembering might be just what helps them to hold onto their faith in the coming years. So many are lost between this moment and adulthood; we cannot let that happen to another generation. Consider my words in light of the members of your own fami-lies.

Next Sunday we also invite all our Graduates, Middle School, High School and College to join us for the 5:30 Mass to celebrate your accomplishments and entrust your future to God’s gra-cious care. Your Parish Family cherishes the task, duty and privilege of praying for you, because we know that your joy will be found in God and in God’s plan for you.

As so many of our programs close for the Summer I remind you that Sunday Mass never “takes a break”! If you are away, please look up the Mass schedule in your area at: Masstimes.com. It is fun to experience other Catholic Communities, new brothers and sisters in the Lord, new music, etc. And the joy of being Catholic is that we always “know how to pray”! It’s the same throughout the world.

And we do have great summer activities that continue: Vacation Bible School, Sharing Christ, Bible and BBQ for Teens, the list goes on, so jump in and get involved.

As always, I wish you peace. - Fr. Ed

CHILDREN FAMILIES

Increase self-esteem through praise Praise is just as important as providing food and shelter for a child. Praise is an important aspect of raising a confident child. When you praise a child, not only do you raise their self-esteem and self-concept but you in-crease their overall self-worth. One thing you can do is focus on the child and describe what you see. For exam-ple, you can say: “You are so patient. That means a lot to your little brother.” For more tips on praising children please email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

HRSJ BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP “Wide Sargasso Sea” by Jean Rhys is the novel we read next. Ms. Rhys wrote a prequel to Ms. Bronte’s novel. She imagines the life of the crazy woman hidden away in the earlier novel. In “Wuthering Heights”, by Charlotte’s sister, Emily, the narrator goes to the wind-blasted heath country and hears of Catherine and Heathcliff and how they were bound together in a sort of mystical union, defying death itself. We will see whether Ms. Rhys has written a prequel as splendid or fearsome. Come to the rectory at Holy Redeemer on the first Friday of the month, June 3, 2016, for our meeting at 7 o’clock. There is NO requirement that you have read “Jane Eyre “by Charlotte Bronte. And if you haven’t read either book, come anyway for Christian fellowship.
