Blessing of the Backpacks: On Sunday, September 11
th, as we start a new program year, and as many of our children are beginning
the school year, we will have a blessing of the backpacks and briefcase at the 10:30 AM service.
Please bring your backpack (or your briefcase or tote bag if you are an adult) and place it in front
of the altar before the service. After the offertory, we will ask God’s blessing on our work using
these tools in the coming year!
Worship Committee would like to let you know that you are invited to announce requests for pray-ers during the service, just before the Prayers of the People begin.
This is one more way to help us know who may need help and prayers, espe-cially those that come up after the bulletin has been printed.

“Stewardship”
The Stewardship Committee met on August 3rd, 17th, & 24th. The theme for this year is “Building a Sure Foundation”. This year we will be laying the first corner and we are looking at the times and talents of the congregation. If you volunteer time other than through a committee please contact one of the members of the stewardship committee so we can capture your hours. We know there are some things that parishioners do like dinners and parties that are not through committees. We would like to capture all the ours donated for events that are done.
The stewardship committee met with the Vestry on August 16th and determined that the vestry, finance committee and stewardship committee will meet prior to the September 20th vestry meet-ings to fill out our pledge cards. The goal is to have 100% commitment from the three commit-tees prior to the Stewardship Campaign kick off on October 2nd. The vestry also tasked the stew-ardship committee with the stewardship campaign goal. For 2017 we need to increase income by $15,000. This sounds like a very large sum, but based on the success of last year’s campaign we feel that it is achievable.
The Stewardship Campaign schedule is:
October 2nd—Kickoff;
October 9th & 16th—there will be stewardship Adult Forums;
October 23rd—pledge cards will be blessed and available for pick up and there will be a stewardship coffee hour and meeting after the 10:30 service;
October 30th—Shrinemont Family Retreat weekend; and
November 6th—Ingathering—Bring your pledge cards back.
Please remember the Blessings Jar in the parish hall and do not forget to drop in your blessings. This can be anonymous if you so choose. We would like to have the jar full on New Year’s Eve.
Ann Henderson—Stewardship Chair
Matthew 7:24-27 Build Your House on the Rock 24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
We have all heard these verses as they rotate through the Episcopal yearly readings and through our own bible studies. As the stewardship committee has been discussing this year’s theme “Building a Sure Foundation”, these verses have run through my mind almost daily. Our gifts of time, talents and tithes are what build the foundation of the church. A strong financial health is one corner stone, the time we give to church and outreach events is the second cornerstone, the talents we share with the church and others is the third cornerstone and the administrative re-sponsibilities makes the fourth cornerstone. Without any one of these corner stones we would be sitting on a precarious foundation. Let’s work together to lay the first cornerstone in 2017 and make Epiphany the strongest it has ever been.
Blessings,
Ann Henderson

From East Africa to Richmond, VA: The process of making new friends
and Integrating into the new Community.
It was with mixed feelings of excitement and fear of unknown, when I and my family and made a decision to relo-
cate from Kenya & Tanzania in East Africa which is over 8,000 miles away to settle in the United States in April
2016. I was filled with uncertainty since I was not having any contacts or relatives in USA to make my transition
smooth. However, I came with two major assets; Optimism and Prayer that I will integrate well into the new home
though fear of unknown was trailing me. I had two options of states to go and settle as my new home in USA-
Michigan & Virginia. Through internet search and consultation with US expatriate citizens working in HIV program
in East Africa I was convinced that Richmond Virginia is the place to make new home for me and family mainly be-
cause of 2 reasons; friendly weather (warmer compared to Michigan) condition, and effective school systems. Be-
cause it was completely a new environment, I decided to come alone then my family (my Wife-Loyce, my Daugh-
ter-Faith and my Son-Francis) joined me in June 2016 and it was a blessing meeting the community at Epiphany
Church, Lakeside, Richmond which made our settling and integrating into the new community and friends very
smooth.
My first month (April 2016) was full of challenges notably difficulties in securing an apartment as a new immigrant,
process of acquiring Social Security number, transportation and adjusting to the new food which was totally differ-
ent from what I was used to from Kenya and Tanzania where I have lived before. I pressed on with prayer and op-
timism and gladly God opened new friends and this was a great blessing to me.
God sent, and precisely on May 10, 2016 I met Eileen Breen (An English professor – friend of Harrison Higgins) and
with her great smile, she was welcoming and willing to talk with me and I shared my background and challenges as
I try to settle here in Richmond, it is through her that I was able to get connected with Church of Epiphany Chris-
tians at Lakeside, Richmond. Two days later (May 12, 2016) I got a phone call from one of the officials of the
Epiphany Church-Scott Blackwell and he wanted to meet and talk with me, I welcomed him to my apartment at
Hilliard Roads Apartments which he came over within 30 minutes. We had a great discussion for about one hour
which revolved around my background, my family and he was also able to explain the mission of Epiphany Church
and the community outreach activities they run. He was able to coordinate the support from the church of which
it was overwhelming from both from the Epiphany church leadership and its members. It might not possible to
mention everyone in the church but all members had something to offer both material and prayers.
Through the Epiphany Church community, my family was able to receive overwhelming support ranging from fur-
nishing of my apartment, transport, internet services at the church (which was handy as I was preparing to sit for
my NCLEX-RN examination), driving, English lessons, information, and above all the prayers which made every part
of my plan work. I passed NCLEX-RN examination, got a car, secured a job and we feel settled with my family. This
could not have been possible without the Epiphany Church, Lakeside members and community.
My God bless the Epiphany Church community; you are a great service to the community you serve. My family and
I is blessed to be a member of this great community: Epiphany Episcopal Church, Lakeside, Richmond.
With heartily appreciation from Augustine Kiplagat and Family
