To celebrate its centennial, the 4A’s has named 100 People Who Make Advertising Great, recognizing a diverse and distinguished group that represents the best of the industry, across all levels and disciplines. The group will be fêted at the 4A’s 100th Anniversary Gala, a benefit for the 4A’s Foundation, on September 27 in NYC.

This is the last of four issues where we’ve revealed the list: Exceptional professionals, industry leaders and rising stars who are leaving their mark —from creating great work and driving great culture to inspiring greatness in others. Open to all employees of U.S.-based agencies and industry associations, hundreds were nominated by their peers, associates and colleagues. The final list was selected by an esteemed panel of 13 industry players who also represent diversity of experience.

They say that youth is wasted on the young, but Wingo epitomizes what youthful drive, dedication and energy can achieve. She cofounded her Austin-based agency in her 20s while serving on the boards of the American Heart Association, the Austin Advertising Federation and the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce. Today, SandersWingo

numbers 90 people in three locations with $120 million in annual billings. And Wingo is happy to transmit her expertise and passion to the many newbie advertising professionals she mentors.

The next big thing: “It’s exciting to see AI emerge. With it, there’s an opportunity to make advertising more intuitive and more useful. As technology evolves, it’s important for brands to remember: It’s still all about human beings. Marketing intelligence that genuinely helps people make better choices will always win out.”

An ad that inspires: “The Gap campaign in the 90s: The print, TV—all of it—was the first time I can remember seeing myself and my friends reflected in advertising. Beyond the hip factor, advertising that makes you truly feel understood for the first time is pretty powerful.”

A tech-savvy storyteller, Casey has been at the forefront of integrating AI, VR and AR into experiential. This year, he led a global team of 60 in conceiving a number of digital firsts and brand experiences on giant stages. At Sundance, Spinifex created a virtual driving experience controlled by user biometrics for Acura. At the LA Auto Show, the team unleashed a spectacular complete with pyro, smoke and stormtroopers to unveil the Nissan Rogue Star Wars Limited Edition. A one-time junior designer at the agency, Casey was named CEO at just 36 and his high-tech activations have helped catapult the agency’s profits.

A renowned leader whose 20-plus years of experience spans digital, investment, innovation and client leadership, Richman will be starting in a new role in October as U.S. CEO of MEC, where she’ll be helping the media giant succeed in its merger with sister agency Maxus. She takes on this challenge after her time at Starcom USA, where she used her digital pedigree to champion an integrated approach to consumer-driven brand experiences. She also transformed Starcom’s infrastructure, including creating a single Center of Excellence to address core needs in cross-platform and scaled buying across addressable marketplaces.

The next big thing: “Empathy. From voice and interface design to value exchange, marketers that empathize with the needs and emotional state of their customers and talent will win their trust and loyalty.”

Her hidden talent: “My side hustle is managing the family farm in North Dakota. Like advertising, agriculture is being totally transformed by data and technology, yet still relies on the ingenuity of the individual and the support of a community.”

You might not know his name, but you probably know Pagan’s work. The designer/typographer is best known for creating Pinterest’s custom logotype and identity, and he’s also done work for The New York Times, ESPN, MTV, Ciroc, Nike and more. He’s not only won an Art Directors Club Young Gun Award, he’s also designed the award itself. A 4A’s Foundation Scholar and Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP) alumni, Pagan also admits that when he was young, he was “freakishly good at doing tricks on a pogo stick.”

Gordon has changed the conversation on gender balance in the ad industry. An agency vet, she saw first-hand the lack of women in agency leadership and their absence from pitches. In 2012, she officially launched The 3% Conference, named for the miniscule percent of industry creative directors who are women. It has quickly become a must-attend event, attracting many of the top speakers in the community while giving voice to the thousands of women who have been overlooked and under-appreciated. Has it had an impact? Today, the percentage of creative directors who are women has increased to 11 percent.

What she loves (and doesn’t) about the business: “The way the industry is forced to reinvent itself constantly to keep up with shifting consumer demands and media landscapes. What I hate is how much we resist change of any kind, yet eye-roll when clients do the same.”

The next big thing: “I predict a major backlash against our device addiction. People will create and seek out spaces—from restaurants to workspaces—that are hands-free and eyes up. Advertisers will have to find new ways, or possibly return to old ways, to reach people in offline environments.”

Chung made her industry debut in 2013 as a college senior in the AAF Most Promising Minority Students program. She then interned at Leo Burnett as part of the 4A’s MAIP and was chosen for the ADCOLOR Futures program. Later, Chung joined TBWA where she helped launch a major initiative celebrating 30 years of MAC. And despite her action-packed schedule, Chung finds the time to mentor aspiring professionals and has developed the agency’s first-ever year-long diversity plan.

Since founding Team Epiphany in 2004, Curtis has built the former one-man shop into a business of 50+ employees with offices in New York City and Portland and a client roster that includes Nike, Google, HBO, Heineken and Coca-Cola. With Curtis at the helm, Team Epiphany recently produced Warner Music Group’s Grammy after-party and HBO’s premieres for the second season of Ballers and All The Way. It also executed Nike’s Air Max Con and events around Nike Air Max Day.

An ad that inspires: “Air Jordan Mars Blackmon. I have been heavily influenced by Spike Lee and it all began with Do You Know…. When I saw a black and white shot by someone that lived in my Brooklyn neighborhood, it sparked my interest in advertising. It also turned me into a sneakerhead.”

What he loves about the business: “That the access to technology and hardware has put content-making in the hands of the consumer who can now create effective and high-quality ads that challenge the work coming out of the biggest and most powerful shops. Honestly, it puts advertising in the hands of the people who are the most creative.”

For half a century, Clow has revolutionized how brands tell stories. His 30-plus-year partnership with Steve Jobs led to the rebirth of Apple in the late 90s and the launch of famous Apple products like iPod, iTunes, iPad, Apple Music and the Apple Watch. He has also kept that Energizer Bunny, “going and going,” refreshed the world with Pepsi and propelled Adidas into the spotlight with the “Impossible Is Nothing” campaign.

The next big thing: “We will invent the way to make online advertising that’s not ugly, not intrusive, not insulting and not something creative people hate to do.”

And he knows this is not the time for anyone in the industry to rest on their laurels: “This is the best time ever to be doing this. I love that the cruise control button is no longer available on the agency model. You’re lying if you think you’ve figured it out.”

His hidden talent: “I am really, really good at yard work. Especially cutting grass. Is that a talent?”

Richards founded his agency after graduating from Pratt Institute and the rest, as they say, is history. He has been elected to the Art Directors Hall of Fame, inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame and even had a graduate program in advertising named after him at the University of Texas. He may also be a consummate man of the people, serving on the boards of The Salvation Army, YMCA, the United Way and the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation. Closer to home, he has created a profit-sharing plan for employees that is described as “second to none.”

Carney has done brand/agency leadership—president of marketing at Disney, worldwide planning director for Ogilvy & Mather—and started two companies of her own. It all comes down to her belief that “strategy is the scaffolding upon which creativity is built.” Currently, Carney and Untitled Worldwide are partnering with start-ups such as Oscar Health and Glossier, plus established brands like Spotify and Gap (where she also served as interim CEO).

While no one could argue with his creative and marketing chops for clients like Reebok, Chipotle, REI and 3M, Venables has also gained a solid reputation as a builder of long-term relationships, including his decade-long partnership with Audi, and for his integrity and compassion. He’s a longtime supporter of the March of Dimes and Arc, an organization that places people with disabilities at companies (including VB&P). Venables also created the Schools Rule program to help ensure quality education for all children in Marin County.

How he views his role: “To show the world that you can run an advertising agency from your heart, that integrity isn’t a soft nicety, that it’s actually a competitive business advantage, and that cheeseburgers and pizza won’t, in fact, kill you—at least not instantaneously.”

One of the few female global chief creatives in the industry, Vandeven remains the consummate team player and is known for fostering a highly collaborative creative environment—a tactic that has elevated the Kansas City-based VML from its initial status as a digital agency to a powerful creative force for big-time brands like Colgate-Palmolive, PepsiCo, Sprint and Wendy’s. Last year alone, VML’s creative accomplishments were recognized at Cannes with 11 Lions and 25 shortlist recognitions across 12 categories.

What she loves about the business: “How our role is changing from one of partners who simply push messages out to one of being able to make the world a better place by inspiring a human connection. We do that with strong insights that enable us to craft campaigns, content, platforms and connected experiences that solve problems for people.”

What she doesn’t: “Bad advertising creates clutter and unnecessary noise in peoples’ lives. We need the quiet moments that truly speak to peoples’ heart and minds.”

Referred to as an “angelic troublemaker” by civil rights icon Bayard Rustin, Walton cofounded his agency with partner Cory Isaacson in 2005. Their lofty goal? Create the “most interesting agency on the planet” that could make up for the shortcomings of the traditional agency model as well as the industry’s lack of diversity. This mission attracted Magic Johnson as a partner and brought in blue-chip clients like Lexus, McDonald’s and Macy’s. Walton has received multiple accolades for his commitment to breaking down barriers, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from Better Brothers Los Angeles, an LGBT Youth organization.

What he loves about the business: “At its best, advertising is purpose-driven and I love playing a role in the lives of clients and brands that are driven by a higher purpose.”

What he doesn’t: “The way the industry has handled societal change in terms of consumers of color and culture. We are image-makers and yet when it comes to reflecting diverse audiences, the industry has turned its back time and again.”

Since he took the helm of the Kansas City-based concern in 2011, Cook has seen it grow from 30 people to more than 2,600 VMLers. He led its expansion into Africa, Asia, Australia, Eastern Europe, India, Mexico and South America and is credited with nearly tripling VML’s revenue over the past five years. But Cook isn’t’ strictly a numbers guy and is lauded for creating a sense of community at the workplace where people can thrive, grow and be recognized for their contributions and commitment.

The next big thing: “I think the world is going to be amazed at how seamlessly commerce and content+entertainment come together in our lives in the years to come. We will get to the point where buying things online feels 100 percent part of the entertainment experience.”

Aside from the countless work he’s done for brands such as Nike, Jordan, Sprite and Equinox, Thornton is always willing to share his expertise with aspiring advertising execs through his adjunct professorship at the University of Oregon, where he teaches Essentials to Strategic Planning. And when he’s not in class or the office, he might be working as a board member for Dollar For Portland, a non-profit providing medical debt relief to local families in need.

A lead on Old Spice for 8 years, Monsey helped transform the outdated deodorant brand into the definitive category leader, with innovative spots including “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.” She also led the pitch that won Kentucky Fried Chicken and returned Colonel Sanders to the spotlight. In her specially created role, Monsey runs W+K’s 60-person account management department, where she leads training, performance management and shapes the department’s role in developing and protecting creative work.

Armed with a degree in artificial intelligence, Ashra started his career at Publicis’ digital agency Poke as lead developer. He joined W+K in 2011 as a creative tech lead on Nike, American Express and Coca-Cola. Wong leads his agency through “creative democracy,” a philosophy designed to harness the creative energy of the entire team for the best strategic thinking and execution and the most engaged personnel. This approach served Wongdoody well when it created Amazon’s first brand advertising campaign. Wong is the winner of 300 international and national creative awards and his “Fresh” TV campaign for Chevys Restaurants was inducted into the Clio Hall of Fame. A long-standing advocate for diversity in the ad industry, Wong has been honored as a 4A’s MAIP Mentor of the Year and also received the 3 Cheers Award from the 3% Conference for his continued efforts in furthering gender leadership equality.

An ad that inspires: “The Doyle, Dane, Bernbach VW Beetle campaign from the 60s. It disrupted the approach advertising could take with consumers. And also disrupted what consumers could expect from advertising.”

TRACY WONGCHAIRMAN, ECDWONGDOODY

Sable’s illustrious career with Y&R began in 1976 when he joined its training program. And while he’s worn many hats across multiple marketing communications disciplines there, some stand-out achievements include being an early digital entrepreneur and one of the first Y&R execs to lead a global business in the 1980s. Currently, he is a vice chair of the Advertising Council’s board and serves on the boards of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the UNCF and the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

When she was named CEO of Zambezi earlier this year, Freeman (who happens to be a majority owner of the agency) became one of the few women in the industry to hold that position. She joined Zambezi in 2008 and helped it grow from five to 100 employees. She also led the agency’s makeover in 2015 from a sports-marketing specialist to a full-service creative shop with clients like Coca-Cola. Freeman also promotes the ultimate family-friendly environment with “baby-bonus” programs for parents, 100 percent paid 3-month parental leave, dependent-care accounts, education grants, IRA match backs and unlimited paid time-off.
