FeatureEvaluation

Hanger Brackets/Air Filter/Filter Frame/Fan DisconnectTrane provides hanger brackets, air filter, filter frame, and a fan disconnect asstandard. When Trane is in control of the specifications, make sure that we are makingour competition provide these options in their bill of materials!

Metal Encapsulated EdgesAll VariTrane units are complete with metal encapsulated insulation edges. Thisencapsulated design arrests cut fibers and prevents erosion of the fibers into theairstream. As a standard, our competition “butters” the edges of the exposedinsulation with an adhesive spray intended to hold the fibers together. After beinghandled, and over time, the adhesive breaks down and allows fibers to escape into theairstream. Edge spray is clearly not equivalent! Specifying VariTrane metalencapsulated edges will force the competition to add additional dollars to their units.Whether or not Trane is basis of design, make sure the consultant understands thesignificance of metal encapsulated edges.

Suggested Spec

INSULATION EDGE TREATMENT—All cut edges of insulation shall completely en-closed by metal to arrest cut fibers and prevent erosion into the airstream.

Number of Measuring Points on our Flow Ring (How low canyou go?)The accuracy of a flow-measuring device is determined by the lowest allowableminimum cfm setting. Below this cfm, the VAV units will change from pressure-independent (PI) to pressure-dependent (PD) control. Because VariTrane units aredesigned to integrate into a DDC control system the UCM, flow ring, and pressuretransducer create a flow measurement “system” which provides unmatched flowperformance in the VAV industry. Accuracy is +/- 5% from maximum to minimumcfm. See pp. 11 for a comparison of Trane vs. the competition.

Given:A consultant is designing a space that requires 800 cfm maximum airflow. Ventilationis determined by minimum occupancy = 8 persons. 15 cfm/person equates to 120minimum cfm.

Using the VariTrane Quick Select (VAV-SLP001-EN), the consultant chooses an8” inlet.

The 8" VariTrane air valve can have a minimum set as low as 110 cfm. Thus, the120 cfm minimum is available. Competitor “N” has a minimum that stops at150 cfm and can be no lower. Let’s look at the system/cost impact:

Find:The efficiency impact by having a higher minimum cfm setting.

Assume:

Unit operates for 3000 hours per year

Unit is providing reheat 50% of the time.

 Room setpoint (winter) = 70°F

 Supply Air = 55°F

Solution:When in reheat, the VAV unit operates at its minimum airflow. VAV systems typicallyhave 55°F primary air temperature. Let’s see how this 30 cfm can impact operatingcosts:

Qs = 1.085 x cfm x DT

The additional energy required by competitor “N” is

1.085 x 30 cfm x (70 – 55) = 488 Btuh

This equates to 732,375 Btu per year, per 8” valve, which is an increase of 25% inenergy required to reheat the air up to room temperature.

FeatureEvaluation

Suggested Spec

Multi-point, multi-axis flow ring or cross sensor to be furnished and installed byterminal unit manufacturer. Single-point or flow bar sensors are not acceptable. Flowsensing device shall be capable of maintaining airflow to within +/- 5 percent of ratedunit airflow setpoint when installed with 1.5 duct diameters straight duct, of the samesize as the primary airflow inlet, upstream from the unit.

Water Coil MBH PerformanceOverall we have the highest MBH performance out of our competition. This highperformance is the result of our higher water pressure drop on the coils. Don’t let thecompetition force you into a 2-row coil if our 1-row coil will satisfy the MBHperformance requirement.

Suggested Spec

HOT WATER HEATING COILS—Coils shall be factory-installed and shall consist ofaluminum-plated fins and seamless copper tubes. Fins shall have full fin collars toprovide accurate fin spacing and maximum fin-to-tube contact. Tubes shall be me-chanically expanded into the fin collars. Coils shall be leak tested under water to 450psig pressure. Supply and return water connections shall be on the same side of thecoil.

Water Coil Pressure DropAt first glance, you will notice that the Trane VAV water coils have a higher waterpressure drop then the competition. Typically, water pressure drop of VAV terminalunits is not a concern of engineers since the units are piped in a two-pipeconfiguration and the air-handler coil is in the same line. The air-handler water coilpressure drop is what the pump(s) will be sized for.

Manual Secondary Cutout“Electric heater shall be complete with automatic reset cutout and manual resetcutout. The Manual reset cutout shall be capable of being reset by a switch, or pushbutton. Fusible links are not acceptable.”

Why is this important?A fusible link is a small wire sized to melt when it receives more amperage than it wasdesigned to handle. Once melted, it can cool and complete the circuit again. Thissafety issue is why Trane no longer uses fusible links.

Additionally, finding of a replacement part for a fusible link may be difficult. Therefore, the unit would be down for an extended period.

Control Boxes as Standard for Units with NO Controls

What we do:

Field-Installed Controls:Approximately 50% of VAV controllers in the industry are “plenum rated”. This meansthey DO NOT NEED A CONTROL ENCLOSURE. If a control enclosure is required, thecontrols supplier should provide it. After all, they know the size, shape, etc. of theircontroller.

If transformers, disconnects, and/or fuses are factory-installed, then a controlenclosure will be provided to house these. (A control box is available as adesign special.)

Factory-Installed Competitive Controls:When competitive controls are installed in the factory and the controller to beinstalled is a plenum-rated controller, then no control box will be provided. If thecontroller is not plenum rated then a control box will be provided. (A control box isavailable as a design special.)

FeatureEvaluation

Analog ControlsAnalog controls are a reduced cost solution for the end-user… or are they? AnalogVAV controllers have a similar cost as DDC VAV controllers. What they lack is theability to:

Monitor remotely

 Provide diagnostic data

Provide feedback to building control panel

DDC systems can recognize something is broken before it is even noticed by theoccupants. By the time occupants notice a problem, a service technician can alreadybe on the way.

Leverage energy-saving strategies such as static pressure optimization (required byASHRAE 90.1) or Ventilation Reset. (See www.Trane.com/commercial/issues/iaq/ashrae.asp.com for additional details)

AcousticsMake sure you are doing an “apples to apples” comparison. Don’t let the competitionuse a less stringent sound power assumption or show cooling only information if re-heat is to be used.

Sound Power–if specifying a particular spectrum shape for a particularmanufacturer, this is the same as being a proprietary specification. This is not advised.

NC (Noise Criteria)–NC level is determined by taking the sound power generatedusing ARI 880-98, and applying a transfer function. The transfer function assumptionsin ARI 885-98 standard are significantly different than the 90 standard. On average, thesame unit operating at the same conditions will show a 4 NC improvement if theolder, superceded 90 standard is used. Don’t let the competition catch you in this trap.

Said another way, if your customers specified NC 40 in the space prior to the 98standard being written, that is now equivalent to NC 44 with the current standard

ARI Certification–Are the units that are specified ARI certified?Titus has a quantity of 19 valve/fan combinations, however on the ARI website only 14are listed as certified units.

Nailor has a quantity of 22 valve/fan combinations listed in their catalog, however onthe ARI website only 14 of those are listed as certified units.

Trane has a quantity of 19 valve/fan combinations, 19 of which are listed on theARI website.

If sound is going to be critical on specific units, make sure the units that we arecomparing to are listed on the ARI website www.ariprimenet.org .

UL Rating for Electric HeatOur units have been tested, approved, and listed with UL as an entire assembly. MostVAV manufacturing companies have their units ETL listed in accordance with ULstandards.

Electric Reheat kW/Voltage/Staging optionsTo better answer this questions as to why units with electric reheat are not able toreach certain higher kW’s on 2- and 3-stage or have certain number of stages, 3-phaseunits when some are able to reach kW’s on some 1-phase, 1-stage units. There aremany reasons why, but the two major limiting factors are wire size and the unitsdischarge dimensions.

A heating element requires a certain length, a certain diameter, and the correctnumber of elements in order to obtain the correct staging. This determines theohmage (resistance) needed to provide the desired kW. Since resistance and kW areinversely proportional for a given voltage, higher kW heaters end up needing very littleelement material, which means changing either the length or the diameter of the wire. However, there are safety issues, UL and NEC regulations, and manufacturingpractices that limit the diameter from getting too small. Hence, only one alternativeexists and that is to change the length of the wire, which may not be long enough tofill the discharge area of the heater. Filling the discharge area is important to building aheater, because it will minimize stratification and will increase the longevity of theheater by minimizing hot spots.

FeatureEvaluation

Factory-CommissioningFactory-commissioning is more than just factory-installed controls! Trane takes greatpride in being the industry leader in factory-commissioned DDC controls. Thefollowing table differentiates these concepts and indicates where options can beobtained (either the field, or the factory):

Factory-installed Factory-commissioned

Transformer optionally installed X XWires terminated in reliable/ consistent setting X XController mounted X XElectric heat contactors and fan relay wired X XTesting of heater contactors and fan relay XController addressing and associated testing XMinimum & Maximum airflows (occupied/unoccupied) XMinimum & Maximum temperature setpoints(occupied/unoccupied) XMinimum ventilation requirements(used to calculate ventilation fraction) XThumbwheel enable/ disable XHeating offset X

Factory-commissioned controllers provide the highest quality and most reliablecontrollers for your VAV system. Additional testing verifies proper unit operationincluding occupied/unoccupied airflow, temperature setpoints, communication linkfunctionality, and output device functionality. The benefits of factory-commissioningare standard on VariTrane terminal units with Trane DDC controls.

Perforated LinersThe intended use of perforated liners was for units that had a Mylar or Tedlarinsulation. Mylar and Tedlar insulation was found to have long-term durabilityproblems and would erode into the airstream over time. The perforated liner wasdesigned to hold the insulation with the idea to improve acoustical performance overa dual-wall construction.

Today, if a perforated liner is specified, it is generally used to prevent possible tearingof the insulation during installation. However, the perforated liner will still allow air topenetrate the insulation and loft fibers into the air stream. The best solution is to use afoil-face or dual-wall insulation option.

SCR Electric Heat ControlTrane does not offer an option for SCR electric heat control. Our competitors use SCRelectric heat control, which is very costly. We can achieve a modulating kW operationusing our DDC controls. Using pulse-width modulation, our DDC UCM calculateshow far from setpoint the temperature is and what percentage of the electric heat isneeded. The heater is then pulsed for a specific time period to satisfy the zone.

Suggested Spec

PULSE-WIDTH MODULATION (PWM)—At heating setpoint, energize first stage ofheat. The second stage of heating shall be energized based on time and temperaturedeviation from setpoint. Duty cycle these stages on a three-minute window. Stage 1shall modulate from 0–50 percent deviation and be on continuously above 50%. Stage2 shall modulate from 50–100 percent deviation.

Lower Damper Leakage

Our damper leakage rate is 1% @ 3 in. wg and Nailor’s leakage rate is 2% @3 in. wg.

Nailor’s higher rate is the result of an opposed blade damper design, which generallyhas a higher leakage rate.

FeatureEvaluation

Hanger Brackets/Air Filter/Filter Frame/Fan DisconnectTrane provides hanger brackets, air filter, filter frame, and a fan disconnect asstandard. When Trane is in control of the specifications, make sure that we aremaking our competition provide these options in their bill of materials.

After beinghandled, and over time, the adhesive breaks down and allows fibers to escape intothe airstream. This is clearly not equivalent! Specifying VariTrane metal encapsulatededges will force the competition to add additional dollars to their units. Whether ornot Trane is basis of design, make sure the consultant understands the significance ofmetal encapsulated edges.

Suggested Spec

INSULATION EDGE TREATMENT—All cut edges of insulation shall completelyenclosed by metal to arrest cut fibers and prevent erosion into the airstream.

Because VariTrane units aredesigned to integrate into a DDC control system, the UCM, flow ring, and pressuretransducer create a flow measurement “system” which provides unmatched flowperformance in the VAV industry. Accuracy is +/- 5% from maximum to minimumcfm. See pp. XX for a comparison of Trane vs. the competition.

Given:A consultant is designing a space that requires 800 cfm maximum airflow. Ventilationis determined by minimum occupancy = 8 persons. 15 cfm/person equates to 120minimum cfm.

Using the VariTrane Quick Select (VAV-SLP001-EN), the consultant chooses an 8”inlet.

The 8” VariTrane air valve can have a minimum set as low as 110 cfm. Thus, the 120cfm minimum is available. Competitor “N” has a minimum which stops at 150 cfmand can be no lower. Let’s look at the system/cost impact:

Find:The efficiency impact by having a higher minimum cfm setting.

Assume:Unit operates for 3000 hours per year

Unit is providing reheat 50% of the time.

 Room setpoint (winter) = 70°F

 Supply air = 55°F

Solution:When in reheat, the VAV unit operates at its minimum airflow. VAV systems typicallyhave 55°F primary air temperature. Let’s see how this 30 cfm can impact operatingcosts:

Qs = 1.085 x cfm x DT

The additional energy required by competitor “N” is

1.085 x 30 cfm x (70 – 55) = 488 Btuh

This equates to 732,375 Btu per year, per 8” valve, which is an increase of 25% inenergy required to reheat the air up to room temperature.

Water Coil MBH PerformanceOverall, we have the highest MBH performance out of our competition. This highperformance is the result of our higher water pressure drop on the coils. Don’t let thecompetition force you into using a 2-row coil if a 1-row coil can supply the specifiedMBH performance.

Suggested Spec

Hot Water Heating Coil—Coils shall be factory-installed and shall consist of aluminum-plated fins and seamless copper tubes. Fins shall have full fin collars to provideaccurate fin spacing and maximum fin-to-tube contact. Tubes shall be mechanicallyexpanded into the fin collars. Coils shall be leak tested under water to 450 psig pres-sure. Supply and return water connections shall be on the same side of the coil.

Water Coil Pressure DropAt first glance, you will notice that Trane VAV water coils have a higher water pressuredrop than the competition. Typically, water pressure drop of VAV terminal units is not aconcern of engineers since the units are piped in a two-pipe configuration and the air-handler coil is in the same line. The air-handler water coil pressure drop is what thepump(s) will be sized for.

Water Coil AccessAll series units have an access panel as standard on the side of the unit. However, you will still require an access to clean the water coil. When a reheat water coil isprovided, access is provided as standard for coil cleaning. For our competition, this isan option.

Control Boxes as Standard for Units with NO ControlsWhat we do:

Field-Installed Controls:Approximately 50% of VAV controllers in the industry are “plenum rated”. This meansthey DO NOT NEED A CONTROL ENCLOSURE. If a control enclosure is required, thecontrols supplier should provide it. After all, they know the size, shape, etc. of theircontroller. If transformers, disconnects, and/or fuses are factory installed, then acontrol enclosure will be provided to house these. (A control box is available as adesign special.)

Factory-Installed Competitive Controls:When competitive controls are installed in the factory and the controller to beinstalled is a plenum rated controller, then no control box will be provided. If thecontroller is not plenum rated then a control box will be provided. (A control box isavailable as a design special.)

Analog ControlsAnalog controls are a reduced cost solution for the end-user… or are they? AnalogVAV controllers have a similar cost as DDC VAV controllers. What they lack is theability to:Monitor remotely

 Provide diagnostic data

Provide feedback to building control panel

DDC systems can recognize something is broken before it is even noticed by theoccupants. By the time occupants notice, a service technician can already be on theway.

Leverage energy saving strategies such as static pressure optimization (required byASHRAE 90.1) or Ventilation Reset. (See http://www.trane.com/commercial/issues/iaq/ashrae.asp.com for additional details)

This is notadvised.

NC (Noise Criteria)–NC level is determined by taking the sound power generatedusing ARI 880-98, and applying a transfer function. The Transfer function assumptionsin ARI 885-98 standard are significantly different than the 90 standard. On average, thesame unit, operating at the same conditions will show a 4 NC improvement if theolder, superceded 90 standard is used. Don’t let the competition catch you in this trap.

Said another way, if your customers specified NC 40 in the space prior to the 98standard being written, that is now equivalent to NC 44 with the current standard.

ARI CertificationAre the units that are specified ARI certified?

Titus has a quantity of 21 Valve/Fan combinations. However on the ARI web site, onlysix are listed as certified units.

Nailor has a total 15 Valve/Fan combinations listed in their catalog. However, on theARI web site only 14 of those are listed as certified units.

Trane has a quantity of 19 Valve/Fan combinations. On the ARI web site, all 19 arelisted as certified units.

If sound is going to be critical on specific units, make sure the units that we arecomparing to are listed on the ARI website (www.ariprimenet.org).

UL Rating for Electric HeatOur units have been tested, approved, and listed with UL as an entire assembly. MostVAV manufacturing companies have their units ETL listed in accordance with ULstandards.

UL never certifies a product until it passes all the standard requirements and a verystringent internal review process. The checks and balances system that UL hasalways implemented tends to cause delays to which manufacturers are very averse.

In addition, UL has a very comprehensive follow-up program to ensure that productsmade after certification continue to be manufactured consistently with the initiallycertified and tested product. ETL, on the other hand, is known within the test andmeasurement community to be less rigorous in both the certification and the follow-up of the products that they evaluate.

In short, the ETL Listed Mark indicates that your product has been tested by ITS ETLSEMKO, found in compliance with accepted national standards, and meets the

Electric Reheat kW/Voltage/Staging OptionsThere are many reasons why units with electric reheat are not able to reach certainhigher kWs with 2- and 3-stage, or have certain number of stages with 3-phase units. The two major limited factors are wire size and the units discharge dimensions.

A heating element requires a certain length and diameter, and the correct number ofelements in order to obtain the correct staging. This determines the ohmage(resistance) needed to provide the desired kW. Since resistance and kW are inverselyproportional for a given voltage, higher kW heaters need very little element material, which means changing either the length or the diameter of the wire.

Factory-CommissioningFactory-commissioning is more than just factory installed controls! Trane takes greatpride in being the industry leader in factory-commissioned DDC controls. Thefollowing table differentiates these concepts and indicates where options can beobtained (either the field, or the factory.):

Factory-installed Factory-commissioned

Transformer optionally installed X XWires terminated in reliable/ consistent setting X XController mounted X XElectric heat contactors and fan relay wired X XTesting of heater contactors and fan relay XController addressing and associated testing XMinimum & Maximum airflows (occupied/unoccupied) XMinimum & Maximum temperature setpoints(occupied/unoccupied) XMinimum ventilation requirements(used to calculate ventilation fraction) XThumbwheel enable/ disable XHeating offset X

Factory-commissioned controllers provide the highest quality and most reliablecontrollers for your VAV system. Additional testing verifies proper unit operationincluding occupied/unoccupied airflow, temperature setpoints, communication linkfunctionality, and output device functionality. The benefits of factory-commissioningare standard on VariTrane terminal units with Trane DDC controls.

Perforated LinersThe intended use of the perforated liner was for units that had a Mylar or Tedlarinsulation.

However, the perforated liner will still allow air topenetrate the insulation and loft fibers. Our best solution is to use a foil-face or dual-wall insulation option.

SCR Electric Heat ControlTrane does not offer an option for SCR Electric Heat Control. Our competitors useSCR electric heat control, which is very expensive. We can achieve a modulating kWoperation using our DDC controls. Using pulse-width modulation, our DDC UCMcalculates how far from setpoint the temperature is and what percentage of theelectric heat it need to bring to satisfy the zone.

Suggested Spec

Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM)—At heating setpoint, energize first stage of heat. Thesecond stage of heating shall be energized based on time and temperature deviationfrom setpoint. Duty-cycle these stages on a three-minute window. Stage 1 shallmodulate from 0–50 percent deviation and be on continuously above 50%. Stage 2shall modulate from 50–100 percent deviation.

Lower Damper LeakageOur damper leakage rate is 1% @ 4 in. wg and Nailor’s leakage rate is 2% @ 3 in. wg.Nailor’s higher rate is the result of an opposed blade damper design, which generallyhas a higher leakage rate.
