Safety
• In road tunnel, light level is directed by
various “Recommended Practice”
• CIE 088-2004 Guide for the Lighting of Road
Tunnels and Underpasses (Europe)
• NSI/IES RP-22-11 Tunnel Lighting (North America)
• BSI BS 5489-2: Code of practice for the design of
road lighting - Part 2: Lighting of tunnels (UK)
• Other countries may have their specific
recommendations.
• The purpose is to maintain safety
driving across the tunnel to avoid the
“black hole effect” for the user.
• Main lighting design criterias are: • Tunnel type / configuration / lenght
• Degradation factor
• Traffic Speed
Energy Limited number of lighting
stages / lack of precision
Tunnels overlighted /
waisted energy
Design is usually performed
for the “worst case
scenario” during the day
Energy This is an average of
2845 hours of
overlighting per
year (8 hours per day)
Cabling
Every luminaire is hardwired to a power contactor
per lighting stage
Any change will required
major physical
installation / tunnel
closing.
Maintenance
No monitoring for lamp
failure, burn hour usage,
dirt depreciation etc.
Lack of vital information
Communication
Very limited interfacing capability
Lack of real time and
maintenance strategic
information
By controlling individually each lamp, intelligent
lighting control system can adjust dynamically to the
appropriate light level in each transition zone.
With better control of the lighting system,
owner/operator of tunnel can save substantial
energy by implementing
Intelligent Light level adjustment for degradation
factor
- Energy saving
over 26 weeks
- Dynamic lumens
adjustment per
dirt accumulation
Operation and maintenance Reduce relamping cycle
Dynamic lamp alternation
- reduced overlighting
- alternation of use in different stage (average it)
- activation delay
