Landscape

“As the image of the Twin Towers collapsing, retreats into the rear view mirror of our consciousness. . .we still remain unprepared.”

- John Miller (formerly of ABC News)

• The challenge is still obvious. . . Complacency

• The solution is simply too big for the Federal Government alone

• While Fusion Centers have become the epicenter for many State and Locals - Emergency Management is today’s vital partner because resiliency requires both prevention and response.

Sample NOC MMC AlertSubject: FDA Finds Listeria Bacterium During Inspection Of Kellogg Factory- Augusta, GA--MMC IOI #3043-11

NOC Media Monitoring Capability - New Media

Location: Augusta, Georgia

NOC MMC CIR #3: Identifying events with operational value...corroborating critical information

Summary:

The Food and Drug Administration reported finding the illness-causing bacterium listeria monocytogenes while inspecting a Kellogg company cookie plant in Augusta, Georgia

In a letter dated June 7, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it found "significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for food manufacturers"

- Based on the findings of the inspection, the FDA said it had "determined that the foods manufactured at the facility were adulterated"

- The FDA said Kellogg had 15 working days following receipt of the letter to outline what it planned to do to correct the violations

- Kellogg makes a variety of Keebler and Famous Amos cookies at the factory and says it has "undertaken a number of aggressive

actions to address (the FDA's) concerns, including comprehensive cleaning and extensive testing"

- According to experts, concerns regarding food safety remain heightened at Kellogg, following a massive recall of cereal last year due

to an unusual waxy flavor and smell, and a recall of some Keebler cookies and Special K protein bars in 2009

- Eating food contaminated with the bacterium listeria monocytogenes can cause a potentially fatal infection called listeriosis
