Dear Conference Attendee,On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the Scientific Com-

This year’s conference will take place on the premises of Barce-lona’s science museum, CosmoCaixa, and we hope the event willbe accompanied by the pleasant weather we usually have in our cityat this time of the year. And although our conference schedule willbe fairly busy, we also hope you’ll make time to enjoy some of themany leisure activities Barcelona offers, whether that means sun-bathing on one of our beaches, visiting our art museums (just forstarters there are the Joan Miró Foundation, the Picasso Museumand Barcelona’s modern art museum, the MACBA), taking in Barce-lona’s vibrant nightlife or simply wandering around the city centreor down on the seafront.
Note that as well as the Conference programme, this booklet con-tains practical details on the venue and how to get there, and usefulinformation about the city and our Gala Dinner. We plan to do ourvery best to make your stay in Barcelona as pleasant and fruitfulas possible, both scientifically and socially, and to foster our personaland scientific networks. And remember, if you have any questions toask or suggestions to make, we’ll be waiting for you at the receptiondesk.
Enjoy the conference and see you there!

Conference Welcome by the AIIDI – María-Ángeles Quiroga-EstévezM.A. QuirogaAIIDI President
Dear participants of the XVI Biannual Meeting of the ISSIDWelcome again to Spain. As you know, ISSID began to roll in 1983
thanks to H. J. Eysenck ‘‘. . . to foster research on individual differ-ences in temperament, intelligence, attitudes, and abilities’’.
The first meeting out of the United Kingdom took place in Spain(20–24 June, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 1985), with Professor Lluís GarcíaSevilla as Chair of the Organizing Committee. I was there as a PhDstudent presenting my very first research.
Thirty years later I welcome you as the President of theAsociación Iberoamericana para la Investigación de las DiferenciasIndividuales (AIIDI, Latin-American Association for the Research onIndividual Differences; www.uam.es/otros/aiidi/index.html). AIIDIfeels very proud of supporting this Conference, the Conference ofthe 30th anniversary of the ISSID. I want to thank Don Saklofske,Frank Spinath, and the Board of Directors on behalf of the AIIDImembers for their support to the AIIDI.
The Psychology of Individual Differences enjoys a very longtradition here in Spain, coming back to Juan Huarte de San Juanin the XVI Century. Since the beginning of the ISSID Journal in1980, researchers from Spain have published more than 250 arti-cles in Personality and Individual Differences (PAID). Only threecountries have published a larger amount of papers (Canada,USA, and Germany). This proves our intense involvement in thisarea.
Scientists from Spain working on individual differences werebrought together in 1996 for the founding of the Sociedad Españolapara Investigación de las Diferencias Individuales (SEIDI, SpanishSociety for the Research on Individual Differences; http://www.uam.es/gruposinv/seidi/index.html), precursor of the AIIDI.Professor Eysenck was then here in Barcelona supporting this smallbut active and passionate scientific society.
Ever since, our Society celebrates a successful meeting every year.We are especially proud of the fact that many international research-ers have joined us over the last years. To name a few, R. Plomin,I. Deary, P. Costa, R. Haier, R. Jung, E.B. Hunt, D. Boomsma,T. Bouchard, R. Lynn, D. Lubinski, A. Jensen, etc. I take this opportu-nity to thank my predecessors (Professors P. Sánchez – UCM,A. Andrés-Pueyo – UB and R. Colom – UAM) for their excellent work.
In 2010, AIIDI was born and now we are working hard to incor-porate researchers from Latin America, which will ideally increasethe exchange of scientific knowledge and promote collaborationacross-countries.
I’m sure you will find this Conference very stimulating both froma professional and a personal perspective.
Finally, let me thank Dr. D. Gallardo-Pujol and the organizingcommittee for their excellent work assembling all the endless stuff. The AIIDI feels very proud of you.
I hope you will all enjoy the ISSID 2013 meeting.
