14th BroadSky Workshop: Opening Up Ways to Deep Space

14:00 - 14:05Opening RemarksNaoto Kadowaki, NICT, Japan

14:05 - 14:45Meeting the Communications Challenges of NASA’s Future Deep Space MissionsLeslie J. Deutsch, NASA/JPL, USA

Since NASA began exploring deep space more than 50 years ago, communications systemsperformance has increased by 13 orders of magnitude. This was necessary to keep pace with theever-increasing demands of mission science requirements over this time. Studies have shown that overthen next 30 years, NASA will need an additional factor of 1,000 communications performance. This willbe accomplished through a combination of improvements to spacecraft systems and NASA’s DeepSpace Network (DSN.) This talk will examine some of the driving requirements for this increase. It willthen consider some of the historic and future trends and finally discuss various new technologies andsystems that will enable NASA”s deep space missions in the future.

14:45 - 15:25Ka Band at ESTRACK: Expanding Deep Space Communication CapabilitiesSalvador Marti, ESA/ ESOC, Germany

Deep Space communications have been moving historically to higher frequencies. Last step is the use ofKa Band. The European Space Agency has implemented on ESA Tracking Network of ground Stations(ESTRACK) the use of Ka Band, extending the capabilities of data communication (Telemetry andCommand), Tracking/ranging and radio science support. The presentation will provide a survey on thedifferent systems developed by ESA and implemented in the Ground Stations of ESTRACK to supportthe each day more demanding requirements of the coming Science and Exploration missions.

15:25 - 16:05AKATSUKI Returns to VenusMasato Nakamura, JAXA/ISAS, JapanJapanese Venus orbiter Akatsuki once failed in Venus Orbit Insertion on December, 2010. We madeanother VOI trial on December 2015 which turned out to be a success. Venus observation started justafter the VOI in 2015 and we have a plenty of wonderful data of the Venus’s climate.

Hayabusa and Hayabusa2 are the worlds first and second sample return missions from asteroids.Hayabusa revealed the strange nature of a small asteroid named Itokawa, and we were able to get itssurface material. Hayabusa2 is now in flight toward Asteroid Ryugu, which is a different type fromItokawa. We present the new technologies developed for these missions including the Ka-bandcommunication system of Hayabusa2.
