The IADC/SPE Drilling Conference is a premier industry event known for outstanding technical

presentations and its well-deserved reputation as a key forum for discussing the challenges

that affect the E&P industry.

The technical program and the keynote and plenary sessions will address many of the

unprecedented challenges our industry is facing today. The plenary session features a panel

of speakers who will express their opinions and ideas on the rapid evolution of unconventional

oil and gas development and the corresponding demands associated with these large-scale,

factory-style projects. For energy organizations, these demands include internal planning and

development around capital, talent, systems, technologies and risk, and the external demands

for increased environmental and social responsibility. The keynote speaker will discuss critical

issues in today’s energy world.

The conference will feature 18 technical sessions during the three-day event. The technical

papers presented will cover the following categories: fluids and hydraulics; drilling dynamics;

drilling contracts and management; underbalanced and managed pressure drilling; casing and

riser integrity: design, management, and case histories; innovative bit technology; rig solutions;

tubulars; and much more.

In addition to the technical program, 180 exhibitors will showcase their latest technologies

and service expertise.

Welcome to the IADC/SPE Drilling Conference and Exhibition!

Wednesday, 5 MarchPlenary SessionEventually That Which Is Unconventional, But Successful, Becomes the Conventional1045–1215 | Ballroom B

By 2035, the International Energy Agency (lEA) projects that, outside the Middle East and Russia, nearly half of the world’s natural gas supplies will come from what we now call “unconventional” sources. In fact, unconventional sources account for nearly 60% of US gas production today and are driving renewed growth in US oil and liquids production. Despite the huge opportunities presented to the global energy industry through commercialization of unconventional resources, challenges line the path to success. Internal resources, such as capital, talent, systems, and technologies will be required to realize true unconventional potential. Externally, public scrutiny may limit and even prohibit unconventional development. This session will explore how to ensure success through a multidisciplined approach as the industry continues to pursue this opportunity.

Today’s difficult drilling environments make wellbore construction a challenge. Drilling hazards can threaten the economics and operational viability of the well. Using the techniques of Underbalanced and Managed Pressure Drilling (UBD and MPD) in these environments can allow operators to gain the edge and thereby mitigate many of these issues. Topics in this session include: drilling deepwater carbonates using MPD from a dynamic position drillship, use of an advanced drilling simulator to evaluate and modify operational procedures for a HP/HT well drilled with MPD, drilling an offshore HP/HT well using an automated MPD system, applying MPD and using a mud cap for tripping in an ultra-narrow margin HP/HT well, how uncertainties can be handled in steady-state flow modeling for UBD by using a probabilistic approach, and finally, Pressurized Mud Cap Drilling (PMCD) enabling coring and wireline operations.

This session further develops our industry’s broad understanding of casing and riser design to improve the safety, quality, and efficiency of well construction. The session will explore papers that highlight case histories, models, and optimizations that can be utilized to understand the performance and integrity boundaries of casing and risers while constructing a well in a safe and efficient manner. The session is certain to provide an additional level of understanding to those involved in assuring casing and riser integrity.

This session includes papers that highlight innovation in both Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) cutters and PDC bit technology that has led to measurable performance gains.

Topics in cutter technology cover the latest performance of rotating PDC cutters, and innovative cutter designs that have led to improved performance, durability, and cuttings management. The pre-break wrap-up includes an analytical study of the behavior of a partially leached thermally stable cutter. After the break the session will switch to PDC bits. Papers will cover an innovative model that has been developed to match cutter and bit features to the application, and leads to a much-improved package of technology. Another covers a study of the papers and industry claims on matching bits and reamers. The post-break session wraps up with an innovative design solution supported by case studies of bits that mitigate stick-slip.

But in the upstream oil and gas industry, it’s critical. Volant’s Casing Running Tool

is simplicity at work. By putting control in the hands of the driller, it’s the only CRT

that doesn’t require a dedicated operator. It’s effcient, but most importantly, it makes

a major contribution to rig floor safety. Just a few simple reasons why Volant’s CRT

has run more than 70 million metres of casing worldwide. And counting.
