Education is a key component of the IFRA-GMA Annual Conference

each year. We truly appreciate the retail members who participated in the educational program and also those who sent their associates to participate in some great educational sessions. Participation in programs like these is so important. The generous support of the conference sponsors enables us to present great sessions for the benefit of all members.

For the first education sesssion of the day, Michael Sansolo conducted

a review of the powerful challenges facing the industry today — demographics, competition, technology and more. The

Conference Highlights

presentation included specific steps owners and store directors can take to deal with each area, including recent industry events and what they mean to all parts of the industry.

Delegates also attended the session on network security and PCI compliance provided by Trustwave. With a 54 percent increase in data breach investigations over the past year, this presentation included steps every retailer should take to secure customer data.

To keep members abreast of changes and requirements under the Affordable Care Act, IFRA’s business partner,

Education Seminars

Gallagher Benefit Services, reviewed the upcoming reporting requirements and helped attendees prepare to be in compliance.

IFRA Legislative Consultant IRMA Vice President & General Counsel Tanya Triche provided an update on state and local legislative and regulatory issues facing our industry.

A number of high priority initiatives were addressed, including labor-related issues, such as starting wage, mandatory paid sick leave and worker’s schedules, proposed taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages, worker’s comp, plastic bags, data breach, GMOs and SNAP.

You must submit your license application and pay your annual license fee using MyTax Illinois, available on the Illinois Department of Revenue website at tax.illinois.gov. Please note: There have been constant delays in the implementation of the application portal due to a myriad of technical problems. The portal is not expected to be active before Thursday, December 10. We urge you to register as soon as possible to remain compliant with the letter of the law. IFRA will keepyou posted of further developments.

Cook County Sales Tax Increase ReminderThe Cook County Sales tax increase of one percent goes into effect January 1, 2016. This sales tax increase, passed in July, means the county sales tax rate will be 1.75 percent. Federal and State Labor Law Posters

New: Poster Update Replacement Plan

All businesses are required to post the current federal and state labor law posters in a workplace common area frequented by employees and applicants at each of your store locations. The most recent required change in the posting requirements was the Pregnancy Accommodation Notice in July of this year.

If you need to update your labor law posters, you can order a one-time labor law poster set or choose our one-year update replacement plan where you will receive an updated poster if there are any required posting changes to the State or Federal posters during this time. Each set consists of one state and one federal laminated bilingual poster. Included with the Monthly Report is a labor law poster order form.
