Linked Data: Summary and Outlook

Juan F. SequedaSemantic Technology Conference

June 2011

Page 2: Conclusions - Linked Data

Linked Data is a set of best practices to publish data on the Web

Page 3: Conclusions - Linked Data

Standardized Data Model (RDF) and Access (HTTP)

• Integrating Linked Data from different sources is easier compared to integrating data from proprietary Web 2.0 APIs, as Linked Data relies on a standardized data model and standardized data access mechanism, and as data is published in a self-descriptive fashion.

Thanks Heath & Bizer

Openness of the Web of Data

• The Linked Data architecture is open and enables the discovery of new data sources at runtime. This enables applications to automatically take advantage of new data sources as they become available on the Web of Data.

Thanks Heath & Bizer

Linked Data Checklist

• Does your data link to other data sets?• Do you provide provenance metadata?• Do you provide licensing metadata?• Do you reuse common vocabularies?• Do you map proprietary vocabulary terms to

other common vocabularies?• Do you provide other access methods?

Thanks Heath & Bizer

What was the killer app of the Web?

Semantic Web technologies integrate data across boundaries

"National Instruments is currently releasing an internal system based on an RDF triple store. This technology provides increased flexibility and

agility in managing and accessing data for our complex and ever-evolving product offerings. With RDF powering one of our key information

delivery infrastructures, we will enable greater capabilities at lower total cost that what we have seen with any competing platform."

– “You want a good thesis? IR is based on precision and recall. The minute you add semantics, it is a meaningless feature. Logic is based on soundness and completeness. We don’t want soundness and completeness. We want a few good answers quickly.” – Jim Hendler at WWW2009 during the LOD gathering
