For 17 holiday seasons, the lights have been shining brightly on the 36.5-metre-tall tree consisting of 25,000 energy-efficient bulbs suspended on scaffolding.The tree is lit from late November until January, and funds raised each year are donated to local charitable organizations. Intersection where woman knocked down site of 94 accidents between 2009 and 2013 By Daily Courier Staff An 83-year-old Kelowna woman has died after being hit by a vehi- cle in a busy intersection. At 11:19 a.m. Tuesday, RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services responded to an accident at the intersection of KLO Road and Richter Street. A 72-year-old Kelowna driver attempted to turn left onto Richter and hit the 83-year-old woman, who was in the crosswalk, knock- ing her to the ground. The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was transported to Kelowna General Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services and the RCMP traffic constructionist are work- ing with the BC Coroners Service in the investigation. The intersection of KLO and Richter is known for accidents, according to ICBC. Between 2009 and 2013, there were 94 accidents at that intersec- tion. The highest number of inci- dents occurred in 2009, with 26 accidents, and the lowest number was in 2011, with 14 accidents. The two most common intersec- tions for accidents in Kelowna are Harvey Avenue and Spall Road, and Dilworth Drive and Harvey. In 2013, Harvey and Spall was the top intersection for accidents, with a total of 95. RCMP are asking any witnesses to Tuesday’s accident to phone Const. Marion at 250-980-5353. By ANDREA PEACOCK The Daily Courier A fter years of living with hearing loss, Elsie Chandler was overjoyed to receive the gift of hearing this week. Home Instead Senior Care’s annual Santa to a Senior program grants wishes to seniors through non-profit organizations, retailers and volunteers. When Kristin Stratulat from Seniors Outreach asked Chandler, 96, what she wanted for Christmas, Chandler wished for the gift of hearing. Home Instead Senior Care then contacted Colin VanBergen at NexGen Hearing, who set Chandler up with a pair of donated hearing aids. VanBergen started a hearing aid donation program 2 1/2 years ago when he saw how many peo- ple were living without hearing aids because they could not afford them. “One of my biggest frustrations is when people can’t afford to do anything about their hearing loss,” said VanBergen. “More than 75 per cent of people with hearing loss do not do anything about it.” Over the past 2 1/2 years, VanBergen has fitted 30 people with donated hearing aids from others who have died or don’t use them anymore. After giving Chandler hers a week ago, VanBergen decided to take it one step further and con- tact one of his hearing aid suppli- ers to ask if it could donate new, advanced hearing aids to Chandler.
