Why go for Concept Mapping? Concept Maps allow you to present the information
visually.
Since a picture is worth1000 words, Concept Maps help you understand complex information easily.
There are C.Map softwares that enable you to add media elements in layer form, offering you the hierarchy advantage.
Major uses of Concept Mapping are:
Curriculum Development Strategy for learning, teaching &
collaborating To explain various concepts To relate concepts in hierarchical manner Evaluation Note Taking during Field Trip, Brain Storm Sessions
Concept Maps and Curriculum Design
Concept maps are effective tools for making the structure of knowledge explicit.
Hence when faculties start using them for developing curriculum, it will help the teachers ask, what it is I want the students to learn instead of asking what it is I want to teach?

Curriculum Development
Involves planning, implementation and evaluation of curriculum.
Constructing the curriculum.
A logical step-by-step procedure based on managerial or behavioral approaches to curriculum and rooted in scientific principles of education.
It refers to how we conceptualize the curriculum and arrange its major components (subject matter content and learning experiences) to provide guidance and direction as one develops the curriculum.
Involved as a part of curriculum development.
Since curriculum development involves step-by-step procedure, hierarchy type of concept map would be used.
Curriculum Design
Steps in Making a Concept Map
Write down major terms or concepts about a topic. Identify the most general, intermediate, and specific
concepts. Begin drawing the concept map:
Concepts are circled Place the most general concepts at the top
Place intermediate concepts below general concepts Put specific concepts at the bottom of concept map.
Draw lines between related concepts. Label the lines with "linking words" to indicate how the concepts are related.
Revise the map.

By constructing a concept map, you can identify areas that appear trivial, and may want to delete from the course.
You can identify the concepts you want to emphasize.
You can understand the concepts from students’ point of view hence can better relate to the students and to challenge their ways of thinking.
Advantages of Using Concept Mapping for Curriculum
The mapping process may enable you to identify concepts that are key to more than one discipline, so that you can move beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Concept maps, apart from enabling you to select appropriate instructional materials can enable you to construct a map that incorporates teaching strategies as well as time and task allocations for various parts of the course.
You can facilitate efforts to reconceptualize course content.
Concept maps facilitate the intentions of faculty -- the integration you expect to occur.
Concept maps can be used as a basis for discussion among students and to summarize general course concepts.
Concept maps support a holistic style of learning
Cross linking can increase your ability to provide meaningfulness to students by integrating concepts.
Mapping the concepts would enable you to develop courses that are well-integrated, logically sequenced, and have continuity.
Concept maps enable the "the teacher to explain why a particular concept is worth knowing and how it relates to theoretical and practical issues both within the discipline and without" (Allen, et al).
