As the President and Vice President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
(USCCB) said in their statement, “The cancellation of the DACA program is reprehensible. It
causes unnecessary fear for DACA youth and their families.”
“…Our nation has done the opposite of how Scripture calls us to respond. It is a step back
from the progress that we need to make as a country. Today’s actions represent a heartbreaking
moment in our history that shows the absence of mercy and good will, and a short-sighted
vision for the future. DACA youth are woven into the fabric of our country and of our Church,
and are, by every social and human measure, American youth.”
The Diocese of Grand Rapids renews its call to protect immigrants and refugees who have made a home here in West Michigan
and we stand ready to assist in any way possible.
I stand firm with my brother bishops in “urging Congress to act and immediately resume work toward a legislative solution.”
PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: Together, as committed
followers of Jesus, we worship, value diversity, work for justice
and create community.

One of Dr. Seuss’ lesser-known children’s books is The Butter
Battle Book. On one level, it’s a children’s story. But on
another, it’s a period piece for adults about the Cold
War. Symbolic of that rift between nations was the Berlin
Wall. And so, it’s appropriate that The Butter Battle
Book begins with a wall: “On the last day of summer, ten hours
before fall… my grandfather took me out to the Wall. For a
while he stood silent. Then finally he said, with a very sad
shake of his very old head, ‘As you know… on this side of the
Wall we are Yooks. On the far side of this Wall live the
Zooks.’”
Grandfather then explains the horrible difference that separates
the two peoples: unlike the Yooks, the Zooks eat their bread
with the butter side down!
This just won’t do: ‘You can’t trust a Zook who spreads bread
underneath!’
Grandpa then recounts the long, sad story of escalating hostility
between Yooks and Zooks. As the wall rose higher and higher,
each side developed its own clever weaponry – each terrible
weapon intended only for defense, of course. There was the
Snick-Berry Switch, the Triple Sling Jigger and the Kick-a-Poo-
Kid.
Most terrifying of all was the Bitsy Big-Boy Boomeroo. It was
a tiny little bomb, but it packed quite a punch. If one of those
things ever went off, it would be curtains for the entire world.
The book ends with a Yook and a Zook standing on top of the
wall, glaring angrily at each other. Each one is holding a Bitsy
Big-Boy Boomeroo, wondering who’s going to drop the first
bomb that will also be the last.
In an old U.S. Army training manual for noncommissioned
officers, there’s some practical advice for sergeants on how to
handle the case of two soldiers from the same barracks who keep
arguing with one another. Assign them both to washing the
same windows, the manual advises: one on the outside, the other
on the inside. As they stand there with their cleaning-solution
and rags, moving them in the same circular motion, they can’t
help but look at each other’s faces. As they do, they realize they
