Starting andOperating

Starting the EngineStarting the engine in a CNGvehicle is similar to starting agasoline engine. See “Starting theEngine” in the owner manual.

Cold Weather Starting

If the outside temperature is below−20°C (−4°F), the engine may beharder to start, or may not start untilthe temperature increases.

Using the engine heater may makeit easier to start. See “EngineHeater” in the owner manual.

High Altitude Cold Starting

An engine is harder to start in coldweather. The thinner air foundabove 1 600 m (5,000 ft) also makesthe vehicle harder to start. Theunique properties of CNG make iteven more difficult or impossible tostart at high altitudes if

FuelThis vehicle is designed to operateon Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The general marketplace fuel qualityof Compressed Natural Gas formotor vehicles in the state ofCalifornia should be in compliancewith Title 13 California Code ofRegulations, Section 2292.5. Theremaining regions of North Americado not employ regulated fuel qualitystandards for general marketplacevehicle usage; however, CNG isavailable at both private and publicfilling stations. We recommend theuse of CNG that meets or exceedsSAE J1616 specifications for fuelcomposition and cleanliness.

The main component of CNG ismethane, a highly flammable, colorless gas. An odorant has beenadded for detection through smell. The smell is similar to that of rotteneggs. The CNG in the vehicle isstored under high pressure(maximum 24 800 kPa/3,600 psi).Gas should never be smelled and a

hissing sound should not be heard, unless refueling is being done.If gas is smelled or a hissing soundis heard at any other time, shutdown the vehicle and have itserviced. It may be possible to hearthe fuel flowing while the engine isrunning if standing close to thepipework or various fuel systemcomponents (regulator, filter). This isnormal and should not be confusedwith a hissing sound at fittings thatmay indicate a fuel leak. Follow theinstructions under Fuel System Leakon page 9-7.

Filling the Tank

{ Warning

CNG is flammable and highlyexplosive. You could be killed orseriously injured if leaking naturalgas is ignited. If you suspect aleak, do not start the engine ordrive the vehicle. Have thevehicle immediately towed, inspected, and repaired by anauthorized GM dealer.

Before filling the fuel tanks, turn offthe engine.

The fill valve is behind a hinged fueldoor on the driver side.

There is an identifying bluediamond-shaped CNG label on theright rear cargo door. Do not removethis label — it is necessary forcompliance with NFPA-52regulations and insuring the vehicle.Driving without this label may violatethe laws or regulations in somestates. Replacement labels can beordered from your dealer.

Refueling Procedure

There are two methods of refueling:fast filling or slow filling. Fast fillingis normally used in fuel stations fornatural gas vehicles. It takes aboutsix to eight minutes to fill up the fueltanks. Slow filling is done with avehicle refueling appliance or atime-fill post provided by the fleetoperator. Refueling time varies, based on the refueling system used.Consult with the refueling stationattendant or system provider.

9-4 Driving and Operating

Always observe all safetyrecommendations and operatinginstructions on the refuelingequipment. When refueling, use afuel fill nozzle that complies withANSI/CSA-NGV 1-2006 standards.Nozzles are designed according totheir maximum fill pressure: P30(blue handle) for 20 684 kPa(3,000 psi) and P36 (yellow handle)for 24 800 kPa (3,600 psi).

A fuel nozzle less than 7.6 cm (3 in)long may be difficult to disengageafter dispensing CNG.

During fueling, CNG needs to bedelivered to the vehicle at theappropriate pressure in relationshipto the ambient temperature. Thiscan be done automatically by atemperature compensation systemon the CNG fuel dispenser ormanually by stopping the CNG fill ata recommended pressure. GMrecommends that customers useCNG fueling stations that have atemperature compensation systemwhenever possible. Check with thefuel station. If one is not available,

see the temperature compensationchart that follows in this section tochoose the appropriate fill pressurefor the ambient temperature. Inaddition, fill only to the pressurelevel for the lowest ambienttemperature anticipated duringfueling.

Leaving a vehicle connected to aslow fill station can cause the tankto be filled to a higher pressure thanrecommended, especially whenoutside temperatures fluctuate.Disconnect the vehicle from the fillstation as soon as it is full, unlessan auto shutoff feature is used.

{ Warning

If CNG tanks are filled to a higherpressure than recommended andthen exposed to a much higherambient temperatureenvironment, expansion of thegas caused by the temperaturechange may cause pressure relief

devices on the vehicle CNGtank(s) to release gas, asdesigned. If an ignition source ispresent, this could create a risk offire or explosion. If there is anypossibility that the tank has beenover pressurized, take steps torelieve the excess pressure, suchas by driving or running thevehicle in an open area to removesome fuel.

Make sure that your CNG vehicle isproperly maintained and repaired toavoid elevated temperaturessurrounding the tank, since elevatedtemperatures in the area of the tankcould also raise the CNG pressurein the tank.

cap from the receptacle, clean offany dirt or debris on the receptacle, and follow the refueling instructionson the pump or provided by thestation operator.

Fill Valve O-Ring

If fuel or vapor is heard or seenleaking from the nozzle-fill valveconnection, stop refuelingimmediately. Dirt or other debrismay be preventing a positiveconnection. Turn off the refuelingdispenser, disconnect the nozzle, reconnect it to the fill valve, andbegin refueling again. If it continues

to leak, have an authorized dealerinspect the sealing O-ring in the fillvalve. It may be missing, damaged,or worn. Spare O-rings designed foruse with CNG are included with thevehicle. See an authorized GMdealer for additional O-rings.

{ Warning

Attempting to fill a CNG fuelsystem that has a missing ordamaged O‐ring is dangerous.Natural gas can leak. If thenatural gas is ignited, you orothers could be injured. Replacethe O‐ring before filling the tank.

To replace the fill valve O-ring:

1. Carefully remove the O-ring fromthe groove in the fill valve.A small flat-blade or pointed toolcan be used.

2. Make sure the groove is cleanand free of dirt and debris.

3. Install the new O-ring in thegroove in the fill valve. Makesure the O-ring is properlyseated in the groove.

Refueling will stop automaticallywhen the tank is full. To disconnectthe vehicle from the refuelingstation, remove the nozzle from thefill valve. A hissing sound may beheard as a small amount of naturalgas escapes. This is normal.

If dirt or other debris is adhering tothe inside of the fuel fill valve, gasmay leak out after refueling. If morefuel is needed, repeat the refuelingprocedure.

Put the fill valve dust cap onsecurely and close the fuelfiller door.

Pressure Relief Devices

The CNG tank has pressure reliefdevices that are designed to releasepressure if the CNG tank isoverheated or over pressurized.
