NAME Y.V.S.S. Education

Date of Birth

M.Sc.(Tech.) (Chem. Engg) 1947 Andhra University, India 21-08-1927 Fellow Institution of Engineers (India) ( No.13222) Fellow Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. ( No.111) Fellow International Institute of Risk & Safety Management ( London) (No.4690)

Industrial Promotion & Consultancy.

Founder Alkali Metals Ltd., Hyderabad (India) 1968

Founder Chem Design Company. Ltd., Hyderabad, (India) 1980 A consultancy organisation enlisted with UNIDO, World

Bank, Asian Development Bank, IDBI etc.

(1) Worked in Private and Public sector undertakings, the different capacities from floor level to Chief Executive between 1948 –1968.

(2) ENTREPRENEUR:- In 1968, Andhra Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation Ltd., (APIDC), promoted a 50:50 joint venture medium scale industry with me. With over 20 years experience in the industrial field and was at that time holding a senior position in a public sector undertaking, notwithstanding the fact that I was not in a position to prove the technology but was confident that I would be able to set up a plant to manufacture Sodium Metal, based on the documents on similar units in western countries published by the Allied Intelligence Division in the post war period and also considering the real industrial pioneering potential and the back ground of the entrepreneur himself”. (Quote page from 122, 123 JOINT VENTURES by Ram K. Vepa, 1980).

I amply justified the confidence reposed in me by APIDC. (3) TEXT BOOK TO COMMERCIAL PLANT:- The Sodium Plant thus set up, the first in Asia

and the 5th in the world succeeded and the plant was expanded several fold in 1978 with equal success. This ushered in a large indigenous Pharma Industry, which is much dependant on Sodium Metal, a key raw material. I became a role model for many scientists / technologist entrepreneurs and became famous as “SODIUM”. My success has given confidence to development financial institutions to promote joint ventures and support first time entrepreneurs with untried technologies.

(4) ANOTHER HIGH TECH PRODUCT:- In 1973, I developed another product, Sodium Amide (a highly hazardous chemical) and put up a manufacturing facility in AML, the first in India and second in the world.

(5) NUCLEAR FIELD:- Between 1979 – 1980 I developed technology for Nuclear grade Sodium for the Fast Breeder Nuclear Plant and supplied 160 MT of this critical raw material from AML to FBTR at Kalpakkam. Atomic Energy Department could not access this material from abroad because of the sensitive nature of the technology and the product and the then international restrictions on transfer of nuclear technology. I was felicitated in 1986, for this achievement at Kalpakkam in the presence of the then Prime Minister of India.

(6) ANOTHER HIGH TECH PRODUCT:- In 1968 I developed and set up a plant in AML for the manufacture of Sodium Methoxide (Powder), the first in India and the fourth in world.

In 1985 APIDC off loaded its shareholding of 50% in AML, which then became a closely held company.

(7) SET BACK:- The existence of AML and its Sodium Plant was seriously threatened due to acute shortage of power and increasing tariff. Ultimately the Sodium plant had to be shut down for good in 1989 and a unique pioneering effort and success achieved financially and technologically came to nought. AML was left with a miniscule production facility for Sodium Amide and Sodium Methoxide and had to re-build itself from scratch.

(8) TECHNOLOGY DRIVE:- There was great urgency for the rehabilitation of AML. Technology and engineering was then developed for the manufacture of Sodium Azide, Amino Pyridines, Alkoxides and Hydride based on Sodium Amide and Sodium Metal, two hazardous chemicals produced and handled by AML for 20 years. A series of new products and production facilities were set up and brought into operation.

(10) R&D FACILITY

A composite facility for R&D consisting of (a) Laboratory for establishing product at 100gram level (b) pilot plant for upto 10Kg. production and (c) a proving facility for upscaling and engineering upto 500Kg. level production were set up by AML under my guidance. The facility extends over a 2000 sq.m. and has varied equipment and utilities. The facility is recognised by the Department of Science & Technology as IN-HOUSE R&D in TU/IV-RD/2127/2000 dt. 24th July 2000.

A smaller set up was also recognised as IN-HOUSE R&D by the Department of Science & Technology on 11th Aug. 1977.

(11) A new Natural product extraction unit was set up and the following products are being manufactured.
