• When a compound is made a chemical reaction takes place.

• This means the atoms have been joined together.

• It is very difficult to undo this.

• A compound looks very different to the substances it is made of.

Naming Compounds Sheet

6 minutes

If you finish, carry on with the Periodic Table puzzles sheet

Page 15: Compounds and Equations

We can also write the compound names using symbols

Copper Sulfide would be CuS

Copper Oxide would be CuO

Word Equations

In Chemistry we use word equations to show what happens in a reaction:

e.g.

Carbon + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide

The substances that are joined are called theREACTANTS

The substances that are made are called the

PRODUCTS

Equation and Symbols Sheet

10 minutesTasks 1& 2 only

If you finish, carry on with the Periodic Table puzzles sheet

Page 18: Compounds and Equations

Big question…What is the

ratio of elements in a compound?

Page 19: Compounds and Equations

A bit of maths...Ratios

If there are 7 boys and 11 girls in a class, then we could write this as...

7:11

This is called a ratio.

Page 20: Compounds and Equations

A bit of maths...Ratios

I have a 3 red pens and 2 black pens. What is the ratio of red to black pens?

3:2

I have a tube of smarties that has 4 red, 6 orange and 7 yellow smarties.

What is the ratio?

4:6:7

Page 21: Compounds and Equations

Chemical RatiosThe chemical symbol for compounds tells us the ratio of the elements

Copper Chloride has the symbol:

CuCl2

This means there it has:1 copper atom2 chlorine atoms

So the ratio is 1:2

Page 22: Compounds and Equations

Chemical RatiosHow many atoms of each element are in

CO2

And what is the ratio?

Answer:1 Carbon atom2 Oxygen atoms

Ratio is 1:2

Balancing equation

• Carbon + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide

The substances that are joined are called theREACTANTS

The substances that are made are called the

PRODUCTS

Home work

• Research the components of gases in air

Gases in air % E/C
