WHAT IS A CORDINATING

CONJUNCTION?A coordinating conjunction is a part of speech that serves to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences together. Coordinating conjunctions include for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. Also known as FANBOYS.

In a compound sentence, coordinating conjunctions are the part of speech that links the two independent clauses together.

An example would be:

The little boy wanted pancakes for his dinner, but his mom told him that pancakes are not for dinner.

But would be the coordinating conjunction because it is connecting the two independent clauses together.

WHAT ARE INDEPENDENT

CLAUSES? An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence,

containing a subject and a predicate. Examples would be:

-I have never seen yellow pigs before!

-They are very stylish. To make this a compound sentence, you would add a conjunction. The new sentence could be:

-I have never seen yellow pigs before, but they are very stylish.

EXAMPLES OF COMPOUND SENTENCES

Some examples:

I am suppose to work out everyday for two hours, but I would rather eat chocolate cake all day.

(Each red part is known as an independent clause. When you connect the two clauses together with a conjunction, it makes a compound sentence.)

All of my friends were bored, so my mom decided to take us bowling.

(For this sentence, it is connecting the two independent clauses together. The independent clauses are: All my friends were bored and My mom decided to take us bowling.)

The trick to figuring out if the sentence is compound, you have cover up the FANBOYS or semi colon in the sentence and see if the two sentences on each side make sense. If they do, it's a compound sentence.
