  • Composition & Communication

The process of communication through composition is the most crucial step in visual problem solving.

According to Dondis composition and communication are inseparable. Composition is the arrangement of visual elements with an intended meaning.

  • Composition & Communication

    Composition and communication are universal.

Take this poster by Josef Müller-Brockman. Despite the fact that it is in another language you can probably guess what it is communicating.

A graphic designer must be able to look past the extraneous decorations of a visual work and see it’s essential form.

  • Composition & Communication

One way of doing this is to see compositions as simple geometric forms.

As an example, lets examine how the word suspended could be communicated through a simple composition of squares in a square format.

  • Define

First we need to examine what the word suspended means.

To cause a stop for a period; interruptionTo hang as to allow free movementTo support or keep from falling

  • Describe

From those definitions a few descriptive words emerge.

Each of these descriptive words can lead to a variation of a composition that communicates the word suspended.

The composition of an image can have as much to communicate as the subject of the image.

To examine this, lets use images that communicate the word suspended to create a composition with the same message.

    2

  • Understanding the Composition

To start, here are images that communicate the word suspended.

    3

  • Understanding the Composition

In order to create a composition that communicates the same meaning as the images, we need to answer a few questions about their composition.

    4

  • What relationships between the form and the format communicate the message?

  • What relationships between the form and the format communicate the message?

All the forms are attached to the edge of the format. All the forms are hanging down from the top half of the format.

  • What relationship between the forms communicate the message?

All forms are connected to each other. All forms are at tension with each other.

  • Creating the Composition

With these relationships in mind numerous variations of simple compositions can be made.

    9

  • All these compositions share the same qualities with the images that communicate the word suspended.

All the forms are attached to the edge of the format. All the forms are hanging down from the top half of the format. All forms are connected to each other. All forms are at tension with each other.

    Creating the Composition

    10

  • This particular composition best communicates the message because it’s placement on the format gives it more tension than the other compositions.

    Creating the Composition

    11

  • Rotating the forms to the left border of the format increasing the movement of the composition.

    Creating the Composition

    12

  • The addition of image adds the Gestalt principle of closure to reinforce the communication of the word suspended.

    Creating the Composition

    13

  • Using photography cropped in squares create four compositions on a white square format (4"x4"). The compositions must communicate the four words nimble, suspended, silent, and crowded. Create one composition for each word. Use as many square of any size as needed, use the cropping and repetition of the image within the squares to reinforce the communication of each composition.
