The Tourism Project has been planned in harmony with the natu-ral surroundings and in accordance with the best environmental practices.

A low-density tourism concept, unique in Europe, that emphasises interaction with Nature, the preservation of the region’s tradi-tional activities and the relationship with the urban clusters that form part of the estate.

The local community has always been the central concern for Herdade da Comporta. Support for local institutions, awareness--raising activities for children and the Social Project implemented through the Herdade da Comporta Foundation are the visible face of this sustainable vision.

Herdade da Comporta invites you to enjoy moments of rest and relaxation with your family. For walkers, what better than a hike along one of the three classified ba-thing beaches - Comporta, Carvalhal and Pego -, whose quality and accessibility have helped them to win several Portuguese and international awards?

12 kilometres of coastline, with a sandy beach stretching out to the horizon, invite you to gaze out to sea at your leisure and contemplate a landscape that is practically wild. The Herdade’s unspoilt beaches have not escaped the attention of visitors or the international media (such as the New York Times), who have time and again praised the quality of these areas.

The Comporta, Carvalhal and Pego beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag. The various distinctions they have been given over time include the first prizes for “Best Concessionaire” and “Most Accessible Beach”, and the award of the Quercus Gold Quality seal.

The facilities provided, the care evident in the access rou-tes and the cleanliness of the sand – not to mention the conditions created for everyone, including visitors with reduced mobility - make these beaches a must-visit on your itinerary.

regional gastronomy

The regional gastronomy is a legacy that Herdade has been able to preserve, with fish, shellfish and rice occupying pride of place on the table.

The estate’s rich soil is ideal for regional products of recognised quality. Rice in particular (one of the region’s icons) is used in several of the authentic regional specialities, expertly prepared by Herda-de da Comporta’s excellent restaurants, which gourmets are invited to visit.

The fresh fish and shellfish straight from the sea are an essential part of the cui-sine. Sea bass, gilthead bream, sole, sar-


dine, white bream, eel and cuttlefish constitute the raw material for such typical dishes as caldei-rada (fish casserole), eel stew, shellfish rice and the traditional fried cuttlefish so characteristic of the Setúbal Peninsula.

To accompany these delicacies the wines produ-ced by Herdade da Comporta on an area of 35 hectares are unsurpassed. Some of the nectars you can taste when you visit the estate’s five restaurants - “Comporta Café”, “Ilha do Arroz”, “Museu do Arroz”, “Bar dos Pescadores” and Praia do Pego restaurant – are the white, red and rosé wines of “Herdade da Comporta”, “Parus” and “Chão das Rolas”.


Herdade is also a place of culture and tradition.

To discover the recent history of this region we suggest a visit to the Museu do Arroz (Rice Museum), which preserves tools, typical clothing, images and descriptions related to rice farming, which is still today an iconic feature of the region.

Near the museum you will find the winery, a perfect combination of tra-dition with modernity. Built from the restored remains of the Herdade’s former general workshops, the winery uses modern technology to pro-duce top-quality wine. The best way to complete your visit is to see the room where the wine is aged in oak barrels, to the truly inspiring sound of Verdes Anos (Green Years) by Carlos Paredes.

Another must is the palafitte harbour of Carrasqueira, whose remarkable construc-tion (unique in Europe) and spectacular view of the Sado Estuary make this set-ting so popular with nature-lovers.

Herdade da Comporta stages various events all year round. The sports compe-titions held here, as well as the more tra-ditional festivals organised by the local community, make Comporta a region full of life.

The ideal

location for equestrianism


In an area equivalent to 10 football pi-tches, Herdade da Comporta is perfect for equestrian events.The main facilities in Comporta’s “eques-trian city” are various showjumping are-nas, facilities for riders, horseboxes and a catering and sponsor area.

Herdade da Comporta is already a major Portuguese and international eques-trian venue. Since 2007, it has hosted over 1,000 riders and 2,250 horses.


Equestrianism is a unique and exceptionally beautiful sport due to the challenge of coordinating movements between horse and rider.

The best-known equestrian sport, one of the three contested at the Olympic Games, is showjumping – unique in that men and women compete on an equal basis.

Each event consists of a series of obstacles, placed at a maxi-mum height of 1.65 metres. The winner is the rider with the least number of faults (such as knocking over obstacles or excess time) who completes the course in the fastest time.

The national and international showjumping events are indi-vidual competitions in which competitors are ranked natio-nally (CSN) and internationally (CSI).

Besides the competitive component, showjumping events are an opportunity to open or close deals in buying or selling horses.

The organisation of the event includes a partner with attested credentials in the sport – Empresa das Águas do Vimeiro, S.A.

Since 2004, Empresa Águas do Vimeiro has or-ganised 40 equestrian events, comprising 26 international and 11 Portuguese showjumping competitions, two Portuguese championships and one Youth Cup.

Their combined experience in organising top-le-vel showjumping events makes the partnership between Herdade da Comporta and Águas do Vimeiro a recipe for success.

Besides the Atlantic Tour, one of the major European events due to the duration and number of competitions organised over one mon-th for international ranking, Herdade da Comporta has hosted other equestrian events – in particular the Portugal Nations Cup and the European Junior Showjumping Championship, in 2011.
