Certification of ES Systems

certification mark

– Battery

• Overall system will then be approved

via two common methods

– Model Certification

– Field Evaluation or Inspection

Model Certification

• Typically used for high volume applications

such as residential applications for energy

storage

• Requires a follow-up factory inspection

process to ensure products are being made

to the certified design

• Bears a certification mark from a recognized,

accredited certification body

A residential energy storage system used to

store PV energy may require model

certification and carry a certification mark

Field Evaluation

• Used for low volume installations such as

commercial applications for energy storage

(<500 per year in Canada for example)

• Two programs in North America

– US Field Evaluation (USFE) in the USA – a voluntary

program based on local authority requirements

– Special Inspection (SI) in Canada – mandatory for

non-certified products

A commercial energy storage system may

require field evaluation and carry a SI

label in Canada or USFE label in the USA

Overview of SI/FE Process

• Review certification or testing documents for critical

components prior to inspection

– Battery, Inverter, etc.

– Functional Safety review of software may be required

• Inspect installation to confirm code compliance, may

conduct some testing

• Confirm installed components match certifications

• Confirm environmental requirements

– Ventilation, Enclosure, Foundation, Site protection, etc.

• Apply SI/FE label and issue report

– Seek help from an accredited certification body

• India is a major player in the global growth of ES

– According to Customized Energy Solutions, the India

market for ES will grow from about 20,000 MWh in

2016 to over 60,000 MWh by 2022

• Driving towards harmonization with international

standards will help India’s ES efforts grow
