Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders Service (CNDS) for Children and Young People

The Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders Service (CNDS) is a specialist tertiary second

opinion Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) service for children and young people.

Nationally commissioned by NHS England CNDS works in collaboration with locality

teams. In addition to ASD diagnostic assessments the team also provides consultation and

management advice to locality teams for complex cases with established ASD diagnoses.

•Uncertainty about an ASD diagnosis following first line assessment

• Uncertainty about the management of ASD and /or any co morbid developmental or

psychiatric disorders

• Concerns about lack of progress or failure to respond to specific therapuetic interventions

(pharmacological and non-pharmacological)

CNDS provides multidisciplinary assessment and specialist intervention for children and

young people upto the age of 18 years where there is:

The Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders Service (CNDS) provides:

•Detailed and expert assessment of children and young people to inform a skills and needs

based intervention plan

•Diagnostic Assessment may include:

» Autism Diagnostic Interview - revised (ADI-R)

» Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS 2)

» Neuropsychological (cognitive) assessment

» Speech and language assessment

» Occupational therapy assessment

» Psychiatric assessment

» Early Years Intensive Group

» Specialist advice and information for families from ASD Parent Support Advisor

• Treatment and Interventions

» Advice on the use of pharmacological interventions

» Advice on the use of modification of psychological interventions

» Advice about educational placements

» Intensive parenting work

•Consultation advice to support locality teams

• Training

» Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS2) training courses

» Other bespoke training considered on request

The CNDS team is based at Walkergate Park, Newcastle upon Tyne and provides day patient, outpatient and outreach services.

Biographies

Vicki Grahame, Clinical Lead, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University

• Chief Investigator on a New Parent Group to manage repetative

behaviours in young children with ASD.

• Co-author of a treatment manual helping children with ASD and

learning difficulties to understand and manage their emotions.

•Has specialist training in Neuropsychological Assessments in

children and young people.

Jeremy Parr, Consultant in Paediatric Neurodisability and Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University

• Experienced in assessing and advising on the management of

children with a range of complex neurodevelopmental disorders

and neurodisability.

•Works with the regional neurodisability service.

• Research interests include intervention/treatment studied, ASD

research databases and autism genetics.

Eleanor Smith, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

• Experienced in assessing ASD, with a particular interest in the

assessment, monitoring and management of comorbid psychiatric

disorders in children and young people with ASD.

Linda Dixon, Specialist Teacher, Newcastle Bridges School • Experience of working with children with ASD within specialist

and mainstream settings.

• International experience training community staff in ASD early

intervention work.

• First author of a treatment manual to help parents of young

children with ASD.

Who can refer

• Referrals accepted from locality Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and Child

Health / Paediatric Services.

• CNDS cannot accept referrals from Primary Care.

How to refer

• Referrals are accepted by post, fax or secure email using electronic CNDS refarral form.

• Telephone enquiries welcomed before referral.

Referral criteria

• Clinical uncertainty regarding an ASD dianosis following an initial multidisciplinary ASD

diagnostic assessment or specific clinical question about management in context of an

established ASD diagnosis.

• Referrals must include:

» Completed CNDS referral form

» Clinical question to be addressed

» Summary of current diagnoses/formulation

» Copies of report from initial ASD assessment and any other diagnostic report

• The child or young person must be under 18 years old at the time of referral

• The child or young person must be open to a child and adolescent mental health service

or child health / paediatric service who will retain clinical responsibility for the duration of

assessment / consultation.

The Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders Service (CNDS) is located at Walkergate Park on Benfield Road in Newcastle.

By Car - CNDS is easily accessible from both the A19 and A1. Follow the A193 and take the signs signposted to Walkergate Park Hospitals.

Car Parking - There is a car parking available on site. Please note car parking is chargable.

By Bus - The service is easily accessed by bus see. www.nexus.org.uk for further information and timetables.

By Train - Newcastle Central Station is located in the centre of Newcastle and easily accessed from other areas. The CNDS service is a short taxi or bus journey from the station.
