Where are temperate grasslands?

Temperate grasslands are found in North America, Eurasia, Southern South America, Southern and Central Africa,

Australia and New Zealand.

Temperate Grassland Geological Features

• Temperate grasslands are large, flat lands and homes to a large community of organisms

• The soil is very rich, therefore many types of grasses and shrubs grow

• During the winter, grasses will die resulting in a lot of hummus, creating a continuous underground sod

• Herds of large grazing animals, such as bison, populate grasslands at only certain times of the year

• Organisms in this biome include jack rabbits, deer, elk, prairie dogs, insects, reptiles and many species of birds

Precipitation and Climate

•Average Annual Precipitation: 25 to 75 centimeters of rain

•Temperature Range: Up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, and in some grasslands, down to -40 degrees in the winter

Types of Animals

• Gazelles• Zebras• Prairie dogs• Mice• Hawks• Snakes• Blackbirds• Foxes• Puma

Prairie Dogs

• Burrowing rodents

Gazelles

• Small charming antelope

Hawks

• long tails and high visual acuity,

Types of Plants

• Cotton Woods• Oaks• Willows• Purple Needle grass• Blazing Stars• Clovers• Buffalo Grass• Sunflowers

Page 11: Completed temperate grassland presentation

Willows

• Willows have bark that store water for a long time.

Page 12: Completed temperate grassland presentation

Purple Needle Grass

• Native Grass used for low water availability.

Adaptations of Animals

• Small Rodents adapted with thicker teeth to get through the thick grass.

• Adapt to dry, windy conditions.• Some animals have flat topped teeth,

which is for eating grass.• Many Prairie animals have front legs and

paws that allow them to burrow.• They need to adapt to nocturnal life.

Page 14: Completed temperate grassland presentation

Adaptations of Plants• Many plants grow way underground,

where it can survive a fire.• Many have roots 3.5 inches into the

ground, incase of a drought. • Many have narrow leaves, which will loose

less water to evaporation compared to the thicker leaves.

• They have brightly colored plants which will attract pollinators like bees.

Human Impact on the BiomeHuman Impact on the Biome•We are growing crops and raising cattle.• Fires are started by humans damaging the soil.•Animals are hunted which interfere with the food chain.•Grassland has been converted to farmland and very little natural prairie exists today.•Pollutants are taken into the atmosphere from fires and the equipment that establishments use to kill animals and cut down trees, to make money.

Protecting the BiomeProtecting the Biome• The government can limit who can interfere with the

grasslands.– Fishing permits– Hunting permits– Agriculture permits

• Create national parks to preserve the environment.• Close off the area to anyone w/o permit or authority. • Provide awareness programs to everyone, so they know

about people who are hurting the temperate grassland and the organisms that live there.

• Preventing organizations from taking over the area and hurting it.

• Don’t make any major changes to the Biome( kill most of animals, plant crops, or any other unnatural substance)

Ready For Some Questions?Ready For Some Questions?• What is an adaptation? Give one example of an animal

in temperate grasslands.• Where is a grassland biome located?• What is a biome? How is a grassland a biome?• What types of animals live there? Plants?• How much precipitation does grasslands receive per

month? Climate?• How much of earth’s surface is grassland?• What's the importance of grasslands?• Any Endangered Species in this biome? Decomposers• What can we do to ensure survival of grasslands?• What do humans use in grasslands to make money?
