AMBITION In Macbeth, ambition is presented as a

dangerous quality. It causes the downfall of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and triggers a series of deaths in Macbeth. Macbeth’s ambition is driven by a number of factors including prophesy. The Macbeth witches prophesize that Macbeth will become King. Macbeth believes them and the various prophesies are realized throughout the play. His wife, Lady Macbeth is the driving force that encourages Macbeth to overcome his strong sense of guilt and takes action on the prophesies.

Macbeth’s ambition soon spirals out of control and forces him to murder again and again to cover up his previous wrongdoings. Macbeth’s first victims are the Chamberlains who are blamed and killed by Macbeth for the murder of King Duncan. Banquo’s murder soon follows once Macbeth fears that the truth could be exposed.

BETRAYAL

In act two, Macbeth starts to betray king Duncan when he is influenced by the witches' prophesies. He kills King Duncan to get the throne. Besides, he also kills others to cover up his crime.

PLOT

MacBeth, Act 2

EXPOSITORY Macbeth has two visions of a floating dagger in

the air and some drops of blood on the blade.

After the servant leaves Macbeth alone in the darkened hall, suddenly he sees a floating dagger in front of him. The handle of the dagger is towards him and the tip of the dagger is guiding him along the way to the Duncan’s room. After that, he also sees some drops of blood on the blade. He assumes that all these visions are just a manifestation of his unease over killing Duncan.

RISING ACTION Macbeth kills Duncan

After the bell ringing, he goes to the Duncan’s room to kill him. Then, he goes out from the room with fear and his hands are covered with blood. He tells her wife that there are two drunken chamberlains that awake from sleep and say their prayers before going back to sleep. Besides, he also says that he heard a voice saying “sleep no more”. Lady Macbeth tries to calm down her husband but she becomes angry when he forgot to leave the daggers with the sleeping chamberlains. She asks Macbeth to put the daggers with the chamberlains but he refuses. Finally, she takes the daggers and places them with the chamberlains so that they will be blamed for the Duncan’s murder.

CLIMAX Macduff discovers the death of Duncan.

Macbeth brings Macduff to the king and pretends that he doesn’t know anything happens at that moment. As he arrives at Duncan’s room, he discovers the death of the king. Then, he cries “o horror, horror, horror while he is running out from the room and shouts that the king has been killed. He then tells Duncan’s sons Malcolm and Donalbain that their father had been murdered. Lennox says to Malcolm that maybe his father’s chamberlains killed his father because of their faces and hands are marked with blood and their daggers with blood stain are on their pillows. Macbeth also says sorry about his anger of killing the two chamberlains. He claims that he cannot restrain himself and fury at Duncan’s death.

FALLING ACTION

Duncan’s sons fly away.

Malcolm makes a decision to not stay with them. He will go to England. Donalbain feels unsafe like he says that the closer one to the murdered person in a blood relationship, the nearer one to be killed next. He will go to Ireland. They get their horses and move away quickly.

 

RESOLUTION

The coronation of Macbeth as a new king.

The absence of Malcolm makes Macbeth to be named as a king. Macbeth goes to Scone to be crowned as a new king.

Macbeth acts to be innocent from the murder of the King. He pretends not having any idea of the murder and pretend to be in grief.

Wife of Macbeth, a women who lusts for power and position

LADY MACBETH

Lady Macbeth is very slick and wise women. She covers up her husband’s crime by clearing the evidence from her husband.

‘’That fears a painted devil, if he do bleed, I’ll glid the faces of the grooms withal, for it must seen their guilt’’

I’ll paint the servant’s faces with his blood. We must make it seem like they’re guilty

LADY MACBETH

She pretend to be innocent about the incident just like her husband.

‘’What’s the business That such a hideous trumpet calls to parley The sleepers of the house? Speak,speak!’’

What is going on? Why is that terrifying trumpet calling together everyone who’s sleeping in the house? Speak up and tell me!

BANQUO

The brave general, whose son was predicted by witches to be the next thane of Scottish

He is loyal friend of Macbeth

‘’So I lose none, in seeking to argument to it but still keep my bosom franchaised and aleegiance clear, I shall be counselled’’

I’ll do whatever you say, as long as I can do it with a clear conscious

MACDUFF

A Scottish nobleman who hostile from Macbeth from the start. He later lead the army to unseat Macbeth from the throne.

MACDUFF

He is a responsible and a careful nobleman who serves King Duncan with a full honor

‘’He did command me to call timely on him, I have almost slipped the hour’’

The morning of the Duncan’s death Macduff was reminded by the King to wake him up. He is very close to the King as if he was entrusted

to do such a task.

MACDUFF

He later took off to Fife after Macbeth was named the King of Scotland

‘’No, cousin. I’ll to Fife’’

No cousin I will go to Fife.

ROSEA Scottish nobleman

ROSE She is a good observer, she describes well

how weird the day of the fall of the King.

‘’and Duncan’s horses are most strange and certain, beautious and swift the minions of their race,contending ‘gains obedience as they would’’

Two of the Duncan’s horses who are beautiful and graceful suddenly become rage and fighting each other similarly the same like two men

fighting in a war.

ROSE

She later went to Scone after Macbeth named as the King of Scotland

He can be assumed as a precautious prince. He went to Ireland after his father’s death.

Malcolm and Donaldbain the sons of the king has runaway and fled, which makes them the prime suspect
